What age is Seasalt aimed at?

I went shopping for a coat today and the lady is my local boutique was trying to convince me that most school mums wear Seasalt coats and Seasalt is great for my needs (warm, stylish, waterproof).

She seemed abit put out when I mentioned I felt Seasalt were too old for me and I felt their target market is late 40s plus.

What age would you say Seasalt is aimed at?
@Craftycorvid, interesting generalisations there. Toast is my favourite shop, I wear a lot of their clothes. It's news to me that I'm projecting the image of a 1920s austere novelist. Confused
I'd be quite pleased at that description !

Maireas · 12/10/2021 21:30

@KimokosNightmare - read the updates!

Chocolatier9 · 12/10/2021 21:31

The Bloomsbury set seem to have had quite exciting sex lives despite wearing austere novelist clothes (presumably).

What could make you feel more desirable than a man (or woman) who wants you desperately even when you’re wearing a winceyette nightie? Grin.

Maireas · 12/10/2021 21:33

Well, it certainly all got very bohemian.
Bring on the brushed cotton Wink

myheartskippedabeat · 13/10/2021 00:45

@Classica

If I had to go in the witness protection program I'd wear Toast clothes.
🤣

@StrychnineInTheSandwiches

I really don't think frumpy is an ageist word. When trying something on I will often discard an item because I feel the trouser length or a particular neckline, or whatever, makes me look frumpy.
How about 'unflattering'? Frumpy is a ghastly word. I'm not surprised about the casual ageism on S&B, or on Mumsnet in general. It seems to be the one -ism that is ignored.
mumjustmum · 13/10/2021 13:49

There's a seasalt in the small city I live in. I'm 36, and wouldn't step inside the door.

Queenofblankets · 13/10/2021 13:53

Deffo WAS 40s.

But now it’s all samey, frumpy and gloomy so I’m wondering if they’re actually targeting anyone at all? Certainly isn’t something I see under 70s wear in Cornwall Blush

KirstenBlest · 13/10/2021 13:57

@mumjustmum, that's what I thought. Went in to get DM something, and the clothes were really good. They aren't my usual style though, but I could probably say that for most of the shops in my small town centre.

JumperandJacket · 13/10/2021 15:04

I absolutely love Toast but the comments on here are hilarious Grin

I do think some of their stuff is slightly I'm-so-gorgeous-I'd-look-good-in-a-sack-and-to-prove-it-I'm-basically-wearing-a-sack - if you look good in Toast you would look good in anything. The look as worn by their models is what I'm going for- wistful beauty in a field in Sussex (A/W) or Tuscany (S/S)- but being fat and forty I am pretty far from achieving it. I just wear the clothes and avoid mirrors.

Comefromaway · 13/10/2021 15:56

I wouldn't wear one of their coats as they are way too expensive and my Regatta one is much more practical but I love Seasalt dresses and tops.

I'd say they were aimed at the 30-50 age group.

HeronLanyon · 13/10/2021 16:20

I remember one of the very original sea salt shops in Penzance. Kind of made sense to me there and then.

Anordinarymum · 13/10/2021 16:36

I have decided to buy a Seasalt dress on eBay to see what all the fuss is about. They all look a bit grim tbh but.. I have earmarked one or two.

I will take a photo when I have bought the dress and if it is no good it can always go back on sale.

HeronLanyon · 13/10/2021 16:36

Just discovered Penzance opened in 1981 - I would only have known it from around 1988. Blimey. For a while there in the 90s it really was v special and different.

IggleyP · 13/10/2021 17:03

About 50+

Although about 8 years ago there were many clothes suitable for younger people.

I think they sell more to the overseas market now than in the UK so that might explain why the clothes seem dated

You’ve bought a dress that you think is grim? Instead of spending your money on something you actually like?
Anordinarymum · 13/10/2021 17:30

No.

Anordinarymum · 13/10/2021 17:31

It might not look grim when I have it on. I have not bought anything yet

Anordinarymum · 13/10/2021 17:53

You never know it might open up a whole new world for me.

worries about the boots I may have to get to go wiv it

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/10/2021 19:34

Their boots are brilliant. I'm a total convert.

DameMaureen · 13/10/2021 19:38

Frumpy isn't tied to an age though is it ? It's an appearance !

Sooverthemill · 13/10/2021 20:54

I ordered and returned 2 pairs this week. I thought they were really comfortable and great quality but decided that neither were quite right for my jeans. I was very surprised at how good they were. Will definitely look at their footwear in future. I also like their linen in the summer
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/10/2021 20:58

Personally, I avoid linen. I'm scruffy enough, without adding linen to the mix. I'm currently sitting on my hands to stop myself from ordering a 4th pair of boots from them.
