For me it's 'Leggings must be worn with something that COVERS YOUR BUM'

I'm sorry, even with teenagers with lovely pert derrieres, leggings and top that stops at your waist look like you haven't got dressed properly, and on those of us with less than gravity-defying butts (such as myself) it just looks horribly unflattering, especially if you wear cheapass leggings where the fabric goes all see-through when stretched.

What rules do you stick to, even if out of fashion?

No white shoes between Memorial Day (US holiday, first Monday in September) and Easter. Although...here in the Southern US, it's still pretty much a rule in some circles. Also, bell bottoms are passe. LOL, I STILL take regular jeans and turn them into bell bottoms on occasion. I'm still the hippie I always was!

Amaksy · 07/10/2021 02:49

Don’t wear green and blue and don’t do denim on denim. I break both all the time!

fuzzywuzzywombat · 07/10/2021 03:07

Black bra under a white shirt, never never never
Don't show your bra straps
Huge no no to show your bra hooks with a spaghetti strap back top

BasiliskStare · 07/10/2021 03:31

My granny said you can't go out out in a skirt without tights / stockings before April 1st - Ha ha - where the merry hell did she get that from .? Loved her to pieces but .... Grin

LivingDeadGirlUK · 07/10/2021 07:35

Not so much a rule but it took 20 years after finishing school to wear navy again.

I also think cropped/ankle grazer trousers look like your mum cant afford a new pair, which is horrible I know.

creampuff99 · 07/10/2021 07:36

Blue and green can't be seen without a colour in between

LaDamaDeElche · 07/10/2021 07:42

No short skirts and low tops, one of the other. To be fair these days, probably neither 😂

WaltzingBetty · 07/10/2021 07:50
@WaltzingBetty yes sorry, forgot how classy cleavage AND mini skirt together looks.

Hmm
Yep @parentinghelp1 you've made your misogynistic sneering very clear thanks.

What's bewildering is why you think anyone cares enough about your unkind and unpleasant slating of other women's choices that don't affect you in any way, that you need to repeat it three times on this thread. You don't. We get it. You make misogynistic and unkind judgements about women who wear stuff you don't like.

Bizarre

If I'm wearing something floaty or a bit on the short side, I have to put a pair of shorts underneath to protect my dignity 🤣

dejacqueray · 07/10/2021 10:34

Shoes and handbag MUST match. OK, maybe not to nip to Tesco but certainly going out out. No black shoes with navy trousers/skirt and vice versa.. Trainers are NOT meant to be worn with dresses

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 07/10/2021 10:36

Whenever someone talks about matching their shoes to their bag I imagine them in pastel colours, such as peach shoes and a peach bag, baby pink bag and baby pink shoes. In a mother of the bride style.

Although I know this prob isn't what people mean!

Do you believe all that?
StarlightLady · 07/10/2021 10:54

@Ddot - I lost my dignity many moons ago. 😂

Pigtailsandall · 07/10/2021 10:54

@StrychnineInTheSandwiches Me too. I get an image of an Agatha Christie character dressing up for Sunday church. Or the queen. I think my grandmother used to match handbags and shoes - even my mom doesn't do that. Now, I do make sure that cocktail dresses match my shoes. It's about the only rule I do follow

Pigtailsandall · 07/10/2021 11:00

By the way, I tired a bright top with black trousers today - a bright yellow and a bright pink with black DID look a bit garish, they seemed more bright than they really are, almost neon, and even though both tops are nice material, I felt they looked... cheaper? Like I was too lazy to style the tops properly and just whipped on my standard black trousers. Tbh, this is what I did when I was 25 and only had one decent pair of work trousers so maybe it reminds me of bring broke and not affording decent navy/brown/grey trousers.
But then I tried a slightly darker colour - and a bright red and electric blue immediately looked better with black. So maybe very light brights should not be worn with black - at least on me

I worked in a show shop in the 80s - matching shoes and handbags was a big thing. We used to have to push the bag if we’d sold a pair of shoes and vice versa - and then the polish on top of that. Bring back shoe shops, I say. I miss trying on proper leather shoes that the sales assistants would bring to you as you sat in comfort on one of their many chairs!

Sounds lovely. What are your shoes like?

And have you forgotten that judgy, misogynistic comments are never classy either.

PostItNow · 07/10/2021 13:16

@Blossomtoes my shoes don’t match - dh should have got my very chunky black Chelsea boots out of the car but he picked my brown blundstones - we’re about to arrive somewhere posh for lunch - I fear I may be judged - should I just sit outside and quietly weep.

Standrewsschool · 07/10/2021 13:48

@NeverDropYourMooncup

Great list!

“No 7 shiney and checked suits are for used car salesmen.”

I agree with the shiney bit, but checked suits are all the range amongst six-formers around here, usually in navy or blue.

Dashinghaberdashery · 07/10/2021 14:38

Sounds like a fab outfit PostItNow.

Ddot · 07/10/2021 23:08

Bags and shoes should only match if black or navy never if one is a bright colour or you look too matchy matchy. Say red bag black dress then black shoes look good. I dont like to look too put together I prefer a little edge.

Pinkbonbon · 08/10/2021 00:55

Matching shoes and bags. Or bags and belts.
