Apparently obsolete fashion rules that you stick with regardless

For me it's 'Leggings must be worn with something that COVERS YOUR BUM'

I'm sorry, even with teenagers with lovely pert derrieres, leggings and top that stops at your waist look like you haven't got dressed properly, and on those of us with less than gravity-defying butts (such as myself) it just looks horribly unflattering, especially if you wear cheapass leggings where the fabric goes all see-through when stretched.

What rules do you stick to, even if out of fashion?

Well I definitely agree with leggings covering your bottom.

Neveratruerfriend · 05/10/2021 13:15

Love this thread. I'm racking my brains trying to think of any obsolete fashion rules I follow but my one personal rule is - grey marl sweatshirt fabric never suits anyone and makes everyone look look like a slob (eg men's shorts and jogging trousers).

There is some daft advice in magazines though. One I was thinking about recently, I must have read in Cosmopolitan or similar about not having an alcoholic drink before you get on an aeroplane, or while you are in the air. Because apparently it's super bad for your skin, dehydrating and bloating. For years I heeded this advice. Recently I started having a glass of wine in the air and/or just before I get on the plane. Best thing ever! Flights are SO much more pleasant after a couple of drinks. What a load of nonsense, Cosmo!

Scarecrow2016 · 05/10/2021 13:18

I loved the dress over jeans look. I remember turning up for work dressed like that and someone saying 'did you just wake up and decide to wear all the clothes in the wardbrobe'. They had a point tbf.

Just had a image search and it does look kind of wrong.

No white trainers with black trousers or light trousers with black trainers. Doesn’t look right and no one can convince me otherwise.

SafferUpNorth · 05/10/2021 13:19

.... and yes, totally re leggings and too much butt showing. Again, everywhere among the youngsters and sooooo unflattering! Esp if it's a thin, cheapskate legging from like New Look or Primark and you can clearly see the knickers underneath... uuurggghh!

HarebrightCedarmoon · 05/10/2021 13:21

My leggings are running tights and quite thick.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 05/10/2021 13:22

Can't be doing with visible bra straps or even worse, dresses/skirts that are longer than your coat.

I ALWAYS follow this advice. Never drink alcohol, ensure I'm well hydrated, apply face masks and other luxurious skin care products, use silk eye masks etc. I absolutely love it. Never fly economy though, obviously. Grin

Very dated and not very feminist but... if you're going for a low cut too wear a longer length on your legs, and if you're going short on the legs wear a higher neckline... never boobs and legs out together 😂 (I'm just jealous I can't get away with it without looking like "mutton dressed as lamb" horrible phrase but still!)

Anordinarymum · 05/10/2021 13:30

@PuppyMonkey

Don’t mess too much with your eyebrows. Grin
OMG

I now have silver hair. It is a lovely colour. I dyed my eyebrows last week as they are going silver too :)

Problem was I think I got the mix wrong and the eyebrows are now very dark and I look like a fecking clown

CeliaCanth · 05/10/2021 13:30

Never wear “black plus a colour”
Underwear must not be visible, let alone a “feature”

Your shoes should never be lighter than your legs. So, for example, no dark tights with white shoes.
Not exactly fashion, but my stylish mother (born 1918) would sew up pockets on coats and jackets so that you couldn't stick your hands in them. She insisted on "a light swing of your arms" as you walked showed poise, and have hands shoved in pockets was "slovenly".

@SantanaBinLorry

I love a good mix of colours and dig a gaudy clash but red and green together just make you look like an elf.
Yep I wear a bright green coat (we fall it the Kermit coat) and red boots, OH did say I looked like an elf but I just embrace it
MatildaJayne · 05/10/2021 13:34

Being large of nork, mine aren't tamed by a strapless bra, so I love the pretty bra strap fashion. I can wear strappy dresses and tops again!

Turkishangora · 05/10/2021 13:37

I will always have at least shoulder length hair despite being over 45.

Always wear skinny jeans.

Always wear eye liner. Don't care if it's dated.

NorthernLion · 05/10/2021 13:37

I'm all for a jazzy/gaudy bra strap, especially with mainly black gym kit, but then again my formative fashion influence was Madonna circa Desperately Seeking Susan.

SirChenjins · 05/10/2021 13:40

Don't wear navy and black together - apparently you can and it looks classy (I still can't bring myself to do this - it's wrong on every level)

Leave something to the imagination

Don't have your roots showing (now it's called balayage I believe, and it costs ££££££s)

Don't wear gym wear outside the gym (esp if it's obvious you've never actually set foot in the gym)

FatAnkles · 05/10/2021 13:41

A line skirts and dresses for my very pear shaped body. I hate the skater shape.

@Echobelly I love bootcut indigo jeans and bootcut trousers Grin

Beamur · 05/10/2021 13:43

Double denim and mixing prints
I cannot bring myself to do this but my more interestingly dressed DD can
