For me it's 'Leggings must be worn with something that COVERS YOUR BUM'

I'm sorry, even with teenagers with lovely pert derrieres, leggings and top that stops at your waist look like you haven't got dressed properly, and on those of us with less than gravity-defying butts (such as myself) it just looks horribly unflattering, especially if you wear cheapass leggings where the fabric goes all see-through when stretched.

What rules do you stick to, even if out of fashion?

I don't think I'd ever wear leopard print.

IShoveLula · 06/10/2021 18:27

Thinking about it I used to work for a retailer and the reason they had the men's clothes on the ground floor was based on that men were less likely to go to seek out their clothes.

cherish123 · 06/10/2021 18:28

No double denim.
Never wear shirts open with t-shirt underneath.

pommedeterre · 06/10/2021 18:28

@cherish123

I never wear black and navy together.
That doesn't go down so well here Grin
Yogsgirl · 06/10/2021 18:32

I'd wear leopard print but not trousers! And not with bright colours! I might wear a leopard scarf with my black or camel coat, or even a leopard dress with black tights and boots if feeling a bit more daring.

cherish123 · 06/10/2021 18:34

@gladioli123 think it mean if you are wearing a long coat, it should be longer than your skirt. If you have a long skirt, wear a jacket.

cherish123 · 06/10/2021 18:35

@pommedeterre - I actually just gave DC a lift wearing black leggings and navy trainers 🙄

Well, I say bright but I don't mean like Dayglo. I really like leopard jeans with a blue/teal top, or dark red/burgundy. But leopard (most animal prints) are a neutral anyway, aren't they? They certainly don't have the Bet Lynch associations they used to (and don't jump down my throat, I love Bet Lynch).
Morgysmum · 06/10/2021 18:37

@takenforgrantednana.
Yes agree on sliders, I said to a colleague, who was off on maternity, but can in with her baby to meet everyone, I said, nice slippers, she replied back, "they are called sliders" they might be but still look like slippers. The same as onsies, they are just big babygros, I don't see the point and I have said to my son, if he wants a girlfriend, don't wear a onsies. (who wants an adult baby.)

ballroompink · 06/10/2021 18:39

Yes re: thick black tights and white trainers! Yuck!

PrincessNutNuts · 06/10/2021 18:40

If you wore it the first time round, you're too old to wear it again

I saw a girl in a slip dress/fluffy crop jumper/DMs combo the other day and thought I'd time travelled.

As for brown shoes with suits for men, I've been to a couple of weddings recently and without exception the younger men were all wearing navy suits with brown shoes.

maybloss2 · 06/10/2021 18:49

With another colour in between

I wear whatever I like apart from couture because I can't afford it

Peppermintpatty24 · 06/10/2021 18:53

Tell that to a tomato 🍅.

I do fancy a satin slip dress again if I can figure out how to make it stylish rather than "historical fancy dress harking back to my youth"
IShoveLula · 06/10/2021 19:04

A well cut slip dress is pretty much timeless. Many of my clothes have been around and come back again. Some don't fit because I am much older, but not heavier. We wore clothes tighter on the waist back then (sizes are bigger now) and age has made my waist bigger. I don't look as good in the clothes because I look older but can wear something over a skimpy dress to cover my arms.

You can get clothes altered.

TwoBlondes · 06/10/2021 19:09

That toe and fingernail varnish should match. I feel very slatternly if they don't!

Red and green should never be seen
It’s blue and green should never be seen without a colour in between
IShoveLula · 06/10/2021 19:11

@PrincessNutNuts Look up satin slip dress styling ideas and you'll get plenty of ideas.

I wear things like mini skirts (shock, horror, i'm over 45), dungarees (i'm not a toddler), DM style boots with the same sort of trousers I wore as a teenager. I dress for myself.

If I wear smart casual (things I think look ok for work) I don't get comments, but I get compliments on my weekend outfits or if I go all out to look nice.

Barney60 · 06/10/2021 19:15

Not legs and boobs out , one or the other, both looks cheap, unwritten rule for my age going back yonks.

Freddie28 · 06/10/2021 19:18

@CoronaPeroni

What's wrong with red and green? When I was young it was pink and green is fit for a queen, blue and green should never be seen. And I stood by the blue and green thing for about 40 yearsConfused
I was always told, Blue and green should never be seen, without something in between.

MIL insisted that sequins should never be worn during the day. A habit I can't lose.

pollymere · 06/10/2021 19:18

@echobelly I'm sure we've spoken before... Gap still sell the bootcut indigo jeans I bought over ten years ago. I literally bought identical jeans from them a few months ago. I think they're called curvy bootcut.

PrincessPaws · 06/10/2021 19:25

Red and green should never be seen

..except on fools...

I was always told 'red and green should never be seen except upon an Irish queen'. There's sense behind it, red and green are complementary colours and so if you have large quantities of both it is very distracting (see also blue and orange, or purple and yellow). However a large quantity of one and a small quantity of its complement look good, so e.g. red poppies in a green field or orange shoes with a blue dress.

Bras are called underwear for a reason. Hate seeing the back of bras above crop tops etc.
