Apparently obsolete fashion rules that you stick with regardless

For me it's 'Leggings must be worn with something that COVERS YOUR BUM'

I'm sorry, even with teenagers with lovely pert derrieres, leggings and top that stops at your waist look like you haven't got dressed properly, and on those of us with less than gravity-defying butts (such as myself) it just looks horribly unflattering, especially if you wear cheapass leggings where the fabric goes all see-through when stretched.

What rules do you stick to, even if out of fashion?

@Echobelly so this is thread where we slag of other people’s fashion choices? Not our own?

I made a big error one year buying a 3/4 length green coat in M&S. I loved it at the time and wore it for several seasons. I even swapped the boring buttons for big red vintage ones as I always loved red and green together. However one day I caught sight of myself unexpectedly sideways in a mirror and realised I looked exactly like a conifer tree.
I donated it to charity so I hope someone else out there looks better in it than me.

BasiliskStare · 08/10/2021 11:55

My Granny always wore matching shoes and bag but were she to be alive now she would be about 120 - I think she is given a bye on that one. She always wore a matching dress and coat as well & pearls ( not sure they were always expensive real ones but I do have the best she had in my jewellery box ) - she did go down the Queen Mother route but much less expensive Grin

BasiliskStare · 08/10/2021 11:56

@HarrietsweetHarriet Grin - that is very funny - thank you

Blossomtoes · 08/10/2021 12:49

Nice to see the Queen breaking the fashion rules with clashing lipstick yesterday. Vermilion coat and hat with magenta lips. It looked great.

Echobelly · 08/10/2021 13:42

@Bangolads - only if you want to Wink

But I would be first to say that a chic or stylish person would look at me and go 'What a clueless mess!' because I basically use lots of colour and pattern to try to look more interesting than I am, so I'm not claiming any overall superiority in the fashion stakes!

Blimey, a lot of people on this thread wouldn't enjoy Canada 😂 Lululemon leggings are practically standard issue casual wear, worn with any length of top. Outfits like the photo are seen everywhere all the time. I have 10+ pairs and wear them as everyday casual wear literally every day - thanks to nearly 10 years of CrossFit and weightlifting 6 days a week my arse is in pretty good shape Grin but nobody here bats an eye anyway as so many people of all shapes and sizes wear them. They are thick, good quality material though, definitely not see through.

I am a bit reluctant to wear blue and black together.

I don't wear green often - my mother used to say "wear green wear black"

I used to insist that sportswear is only used to do sport, but I've embraced the sweaty betty legging as day wear rule. (I usually do yoga in them at some stage in the day).

BasiliskStare · 08/10/2021 19:47

I wear Navy and Black - exit one stout Basilisk Grin I am channeling my inner Ines de la Fressange ( very inner )

30kgtogo · 09/10/2021 01:07

I am showing my age, by still always wearing a full slip under a dress if it unlined (M&S cool comfort. Just wish they did intersting colours).
I’m very overweight, so this helps even more these days, to provide a smooth base. The dress will glide as I move/sit/ stand, rather than sticking slightly in wrinkles.
Also prevents see-through in thinner skirts or dresses (famous Diana photo from just before she married Charles)

30kgtogo · 09/10/2021 01:08

I realise the concept of a lined dress or skirt is very old- fashioned, in itself

woodhill · 09/10/2021 11:42

I'm the same, who wants something to be see through or it creates a smooth outline.

Dds don't wear them even though at times I think they need to

Bearseatbeets · 09/10/2021 13:37

Socks with sandals.

I know they’re called ‘sliders’ now but they’re awful

Ddot · 09/10/2021 18:01

Ankle boots with everything

I have used that slip for years, even to the point of cutting one down to wear under jumpers to stop cling. The point about slips is that they provide an extra layer of warmth too, so you can wear dresses all year round without freezing.

I have quite a lot of lined dresses and most of my skirts are lined. It wouldn't occur to me not to wear a full slip under an unlined dress.

Leggings on the other hand- wouldn't be seen dead in them. Truly hideous garment.

KimikosNightmare · 09/10/2021 18:23

@Suzypoo10

As a dancer in the 70s, I was told that leggings were only to be worn in the studio, over your leotard and tights, to keep your muscles warm. They should never be worn outside. I have always followed this and have never ever worn leggings
Agreed.
StarlightLady · 09/10/2021 19:31

@Suzypoo10 - Do you think that all advice from the 70s about what to and what not to wear has not evolved and changed over the years?

Going back further, my grandmother would say never go out without a girdle on!

Ddot · 09/10/2021 19:57

I had to buy a cotton nighty to go under a long dress (TOTALLY SEE THROUGH) I just couldnt get one long enough and with lace on the bottom.

EmmalineC · 09/10/2021 20:54

Leggings weren’t a thing in the 70s, apart from exercise wear. You can hardly apply 1970s fashion advice to 2021. Leggings are a fashion staple for a lot of people, worn with tunics/dresses/jumpers and boots. They can look classy not cheap.

I feel as if I’m in a time slip with all this talk of matching bags and shoes, soft leather gloves and petticoats 😂😂😂

Ddot · 09/10/2021 21:05

Well I love a brooch, totally obsessed

I'd sooner be in a time slip than a pair of leggings.
Standrewsschool · 09/10/2021 22:27

As a teen, always wore petticoats under skirts (partly for modesty?).Not sure when I last wore one - 80s?

Hoodies were also for sport also. I seem to recall as a teen, they were considered really unfashionable. They’re not the go-to item of clothing everyone has now,

BasiliskStare · 10/10/2021 03:57

I once ( many many many years ago ) went to the Camden Palace in a Victorian night dress and a sweater I had cut the neck and cuffs off and put bows round both from the offcuts. Now if that is not embarrassing - I don't know what is - but I rather liked it at the time. Got me through a bit of Simple Minds and Steve Strange

I would not do it now Grin
