What’s the ‘new’ white trainer

249 replies

Wtf86 · 20/09/2021 12:21

I’m inexplicably behind on trends! So recently embarked on a trainer finding journey to discover that if I buy white trainers then I am no longer on trend!! So what’s the new white trainer equivalent?

To wear with skinny (yes I know but I can’t do barrel or mom jeans) jeans!

@MummyJ12

Can I ask what you all think to these? I like that they’re slip on. I quite like them but I’d really like to know what everyone else on here thinks, most of you are way cooler than me!
I think they're a bit naff, sorry!

I wear chunky vans, nike air ones (kids because I've teeny feet), converse and regular nikes with sports leggings.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 22/09/2021 12:57

To add, for those who care about ethics but don't like Vejas or find them uncomfortable, Adidas has a similar rating on Good On You:
directory.goodonyou.eco/brand/adidas
directory.goodonyou.eco/brand/veja
Both are rated "good", unlike Nike, New Balance, Golden Goose, Superga, Converse and Vans.
Allbirds are also Good.
Couldn't find Air & Grace or Woden.
It's good for me as my feet love Adidas shoes.

Sorry @MummyJ12 those don't look cool to me. I think slip on trainers need to be from a fashion brand like Jigsaw rather than a sports brand. They seem to say "I need slip on shoes" rather than "I've chosen slip on shoes" I hope I can say this as I'm currently pregnant and soon won't be able to tie up laces myself!

Blossomtoes · 22/09/2021 12:59

I don’t like them @MummyJ12. They look a bit Hotter to me.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 22/09/2021 13:06

I have Allbirds sneakers in two colours - a charcoal pair and a white pair. I'm very fond of them because they work for my feet and are machine washable (which makes them invaluable for my work) but as they're wool they don't have that "box fresh" thing people insist is important going on. They are nice though.

I want the Allbirds "mizzle" high top trainer boots but am not sure whether to get them or "proper" winter boots... I need hiking boots too as walking/ hiking is my main exercise and relaxation, and the sole on my hiking shoes is very worn, and don't really have the spare cash for three decent pairs of shoes/ boots for winter!

I'm not sure Allbirds are fashion shoes - maybe they are. I read about them on here but don't know anyone else who wears them. My 14 year old did say (unprompted) that they are "fresh" when I got them GrinConfused so I think that might mean that theyre cutting edge... GrinGrinWinkConfused

@UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme, I've just started a thread asking about the Mizzles! Not the high tops for me. I'm interested in the runners.

WildFlowerBees · 22/09/2021 13:15

Onitsuka are really comfy, loads of colours

It’s a no then! 😂 thanks so much everyone! 💗 I’ll keep looking….

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 22/09/2021 13:24

OnceMoreOnToTheBeach I just had a look Smile

I'm not a runner so I can't comment on that, but Ive had the tree pippers and tree skippers since May and both have been worn extensively - they've been pretty much the only shoes I've worn since early May except for my hiking shoes - and machine washed multiple times.

I'd say the longevity so far looks very promising, and they can genuinely be worn barefoot without getting stinky due to being Merino wool (and of course machine washed if they did get stinky - I wash mine mainly due to external muck). You need to wear socks when wearing them in the first 3 or 4 times - I made the mistake of wearing them bare foot the first wear and they rubbed. After a few wears with socks they don't. The tree skippers are more comfortable for a full day on my feet with a lot of rushing about, but took longer to wear in. The tree pippers are good to pull on without undoing and great for travel, driving and summer heat, but a bit less supportive for walking a lot. I've done 12 hour shifts as well as unplanned medium length walks in the tree skippers very comfortably, but the tree pippers leave my toes a bit achy if I walk all day in them.

Not sure whether that helps! I would say you'll get plenty of wear out of them.

Thanks until! That is helpful Flowers

Annasgirl · 22/09/2021 14:41

Thank you to the person upthread who said she washes her Stan Smiths in the washing machine. While I did this for Converse and other fabric runners, I had never tried it for leather. Well, now I have 2 pairs of ‘new’ white Stan Smiths. Thanks again.

Charlottemh · 22/09/2021 15:14

I do love my Vejas, I have wide feet and find them very comfy. I completely agree that they are absolutely everywhere in London, to the extent I probably won't buy another pair. BUT I live part-time in Norwich and I don't think I've seen one other person in Vejas there. So I think its a locational thing?! Or Norwich is behind the times?! Lol.

Nothing beats my Supergas for comfort though.

Need to try this on my Natura white and green/orange flash ones.
Pieceofpurplesky · 22/09/2021 16:27

@RampantIvy

Am I the only one who thinks that most brands of trainers look pretty similar, and isn't influenced by brand, but by colour and fit?
Yep. Me
JustHowILikeIt · 22/09/2021 16:34

@chestnutshell

Think it depends on age/demographic/location?

Vejas are seen as an over 40s thing in my circle and not something we’d be interested in. We all wear Nike AF1s. But then we’re very over skinny jeans too and wouldn’t wear those. Depends what your thing is. You’re not going to look shockingly out of place in Stan smiths or vejas though, or white converse.

This kind of comment I find scary. Do you really all find your tribe by looking at their feet?
Snoopsnoggysnog · 22/09/2021 17:00

Can you put Superga in the washing machine too?

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 22/09/2021 17:11

I find your comment a bit disingenuous @JustHowILikeIt. It's hardly a literal "looking at their feet" is it, more of a "I saw someone of my demographic wearing those and they looked nice so I'll buy them too". Anyone who says they aren't influenced at all by seeing what others are wearing, or what is in the shops, or advertisements or Instagram etc, is a liar or doesn't understand human nature. Instagram influencers wouldn't be such a big thing if we didn't naturally look to others for inspiration. Is it really so surprising that groups of peers gravitate to similar styles? Or that people do feel a bit worried about wearing the "right" style? The advertising industry literally tells us to feel like this. I totally get what @chestnutshell is saying.

chestnutshell · 22/09/2021 17:52

@BlairWaldorfLovesShopping thanks. You got it in one.

I honestly don’t know why anyone would be ‘scared’ by peer groups wearing similar fashions to be honest. Fashion/clothes/style are a form of self expression like anything else. I wouldn’t not be friends with someone because of their footwear obviously, I’m just sharing an observation I’ve made about the changing trends in my circle. Which, incidentally, are pretty mainstream and not controversial in my real life.

chestnutshell · 22/09/2021 17:55

I don’t understand why people come on the style and beauty board just to answer an OP who is looking for advice on current trends just to tell her that all items of clothing look the same and serve a basic purpose so to buy whatever. Wrong board for you I’d have thought.

MummyJ12 · 22/09/2021 18:58

I’ve gone for some sustainable strap Stan Smiths. Hope you guys approve. Smile Thank you for your guidance on this! It’s a great thread. I struggle with wearing laces, (tripped over my shoe laces when I was little and smashed out all of my teeth, even though I’m all grown up now and can tie them properly wearing anything with laces still freaks me out….!) hence the sans lace options.

Wtf86 · 22/09/2021 19:00

For some people fashion is a hobby for others they want to look nice. For some people clothes serve more than just their function - they use it to express themselves. If that means wearing the same trainers as others then so be it! I want new trainers and boots I came on a style and beauty board to ask the question. Thankfully it seems it’s a well received question as a few others are wanting ideas too! It’s brilliant!

Thanks for the thread @Wtf86 💗

LoveLabradors · 22/09/2021 19:38

I’ve enjoyed this thread too, got myself some heavily reduced prime green triple white vegan Stan smiths from ASOS too! Just arrived and I love them. I also like supergas with little summer dresses and really like my vegan superstars too for a blast back to the 90s (my fave trainers then).

expatmigrant · 22/09/2021 19:48

Love my Alexander McQueens. pricey but have literally worn them non-stop for 2 years.
Now wanting a pair of NB 327's

itbemay1 · 22/09/2021 19:59

@Blinky21

I wear Air and Grace, I think Vejas are so unoriginal
I love my air & Grace!
