What’s the ‘new’ white trainer

I’m inexplicably behind on trends! So recently embarked on a trainer finding journey to discover that if I buy white trainers then I am no longer on trend!! So what’s the new white trainer equivalent?

To wear with skinny (yes I know but I can’t do barrel or mom jeans) jeans!

School mums round here are in Vejas or Gucci.

Teens are in AF1.

I have supergas which I really like and AF1 for casual. I don’t care if it makes me look like a teen, I think they are great.

Might get Air and Grace next but not until spring.

I don't think I'm particularly influenced by brand. I can't wear converse for example, so missed out on that when they were everywhere. I think the new branding is sustainability focused though, which is very clever marketing really. You look cool AND caring if you buy our brand. I have some Allbirds, but the branding on them isn't prominent. Vejas are obviously vejas when you see someone wearing them as the branding is all over the trainer. It's great that sustainability is such a factor now though, so I suppose I shouldn't complain.

gofg · 21/09/2021 09:34

@RampantIvy - I'm the same age as you Smile. I'm not in the UK, but I certainly don't look at everyone's trainers closely enough to know what brand they are. They either look nice or they don't (and I haven't seen many that don't).

Theriband · 21/09/2021 09:35

How about look for something you like and buy that?

Covetthee · 21/09/2021 09:40

I’m seeing a lot of new balance trainers on mid 20’s-30’s these days so definitely think they are the new ‘in’ look

and a lot of high too converse with the platform.

Obviously everyone on MN is soo original and would never wear Veja’s because its trendy 🙄
They are actually very smart compared to most trainers and once worn in they are sooo Comfortable.

ohnana · 21/09/2021 09:41

Agree with Theriband - just go with what you like!

Lots of my friends in early 30s wear Vejas but I feel they are a bit dated / too mumsy / try hard for me. Just my opinion though as my friends look great in them. I choose to wear comfy trainers like AF1s or Vans, rather than what Instagram mums seem to be wearing. I like the look, comfort and price tag. Wear them all the time.

Limejuiceandrum · 21/09/2021 09:41

I love a new balance. I only don’t wear Veja because every single person in my office does and they’re all 10 years younger than me!

ohnana · 21/09/2021 09:42

In saying that… my trainers are not all white either!

Xiaoxiong · 21/09/2021 09:43

@DietrichandDiMaggio

I love my Stan Smiths and have had a few pairs over the years, but have noticed lately that a lot of them are 'vegan friendly', i.e. manmade not leather, but I want leather and will certainly not pay £70 for plastic trainers.
Check out Nike Flyleather - it's made of recycled scrap leather that would otherwise be wasted, so it's natural materials not plastic but also friendly to the environment.

My boss has a pair of AF1s in Flyleather and says they're great and you don't get that sweaty plastic feeling

theworldsbiggestcrocodile · 21/09/2021 09:44

Veja are a bit middle class middle aged Mum that still wants to appear trendy-I wouldn't go there. Nike Air Force ones or air max are your go to now I would think. New Balance are having a Renaissance. Seen on lots of young slebs of late (And they are comfy. I love mine). My fall back is still Superga. Millions of Italians can't be wrong (though they probably are a bit passé now).

theworldsbiggestcrocodile · 21/09/2021 09:45

I also quite like Reebok classics

ilkleymoorbartat · 21/09/2021 09:46

Vera are so mum

annacondom · 21/09/2021 09:48

Re vegan trainers, they're not necessarily plastic. They can be e.g. coconut fibre or made from pineapple leaves.

I've been wearing barefoot trainers from Vivo for several years now. They're very light and have a lot of room for your toes. So I think my feet have spread and the very rare times I wear heels or my smart boots I find them.very uncomfortable! Vivo are ethical.

mylittleyumyum · 21/09/2021 10:04

I love my AF1's, I have classic white and dusky pink. I also love my Campers and retro looking Puma.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/09/2021 10:11

I think it depends on the type of training you are planning to do;
e.g. sprint running, marathon running, boxing, school gate posing, athletics, weight lifting etc.

Roundlampshade · 21/09/2021 10:15

I wear Vejas and they are super comfy. Alternatively, I wear Steve Madden which are also very comfy.

ImFree2doasiwant · 21/09/2021 10:17

@UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme I assumed the OP meant that white trainers were on their way our, and what was their replacement.

peaceanddove · 21/09/2021 10:18

I've recently bought some platform Converse one red pair, and one black. Also a pair of Nike Cortez in white with black trim. Bought on the advice of my 17 year old DD2 and she knows her trainers.

RampantIvy · 21/09/2021 10:18

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles

I think it depends on the type of training you are planning to do; e.g. sprint running, marathon running, boxing, school gate posing, athletics, weight lifting etc.
Or just for general walking?
LOISJ · 21/09/2021 10:18

I’ve got a nice pair of plimsole type ones…similar to converse so less ‘trainery’ and you can wear them with dresses. Soul Cal micro light only £17! Alternatively, I also wear Lacoste Ortholite also lovely

RampantIvy · 21/09/2021 10:20

DD (21) has some platform Converse and says they are really comfortable. Like me, she isn't influenced by brand or what is "in". She goes for comfort.

PegasusReturns · 21/09/2021 10:21

Round where I am everyone has swapped out white trainers for chain clogs. I was recently in Matches and all the sales assistants were wearing them.

Lots of JW Anderson and (I think balanciaga?) but plenty of other options.

These will be swapped out for chunky mid calf Chelsea boots come winter.

RampantIvy · 21/09/2021 10:24

I have those as well @LOISJ. Only £15 in my case. They look like Converse without the stars.

DamnitImTired · 21/09/2021 11:15

Im 42 and love my Reebok Club C or Superga white trainers
Tried others like AF1 but still cant get my head around such chunky shoes on my feet

PeaceLily2000 · 21/09/2021 11:18

@itsharderthanithought89

Veja!

Very "in" in the right circles and also good for the environment xx

Not good for heels! Mine get cut to shreds every time! Got some cheapy Matalan trainers to try out instead - first outing today!
