Naff things in other people's fashion sense

I know that it is a question of each to his own etc but what do you find naff in other people's fashion sense?

OP posts:

Yeah I agree about lip fillers, awful, you can't look at anything else. Admittedly I might not know for some people - but then 1) what's the point? I doubt they had abnormally thin lips to start with so how does it actually improve appearance? 2) people always think it doesn't show on them and it's everyone else who looks overdone.

Also, dungarees.

@habibihabibi

General fakery ; Gaudy nails, especially acrylic talons with stickers and gems. Artifical hair extensions. Tipex teeth. Dark thick, interferred with eyebrows. Lip fillers. Loo brush bristle nylon lashes.
I think there's a line where these things go from being subtle and make you look like a slightly better version of yourself to being gaudy and naff.

I have lash extensions, hair extensions and "interferred with" eyebrows but because I have trichotillomania and have bald patches in these areas.. The lash extentions but only 3 little wispy bits at the edges where they at sparse. Same with hair extensions - got some to help cover a bald patch and my eyebrows need filling too. I look "normal" because it's to bring everything back to how it should be🤷🏻‍♀️

N0tfinished · 26/06/2021 09:22

Def what habibibi said but those eyelashes really get too me. Especially the shiny cheap looking ones. All you're looking at is the eyelashes flapping up and down in the breeze. I met a girl once who had individual clumps stuck on with clearly visible gobs of glue. Or the lash extensions that are so long they drag the eyes down and lake the wearer look like a sad puppy.

Jahebejrjr · 26/06/2021 09:25

Basically, you can boil down this discussion to this. Everything you people consider to be fashion that working-class people like is awful. Everything middle-class people wear is wonderful.

Willwebebuyingnumber11 · 26/06/2021 09:26

Men who wear skinny trousers or jeans with those vile brown shoes with the holes and no socks 🤮🤮 absolutely awful!

wowhie · 26/06/2021 09:26

@Jahebejrjr how did you get to that conclusion?

Willwebebuyingnumber11 · 26/06/2021 09:27

Sketchers. But I don’t think they’re for fashion, more comfort.

Jahebejrjr · 26/06/2021 09:28

Is that a serious question @wowhie?

Disfordarkchocolate · 26/06/2021 09:29

I see clothing etc that I would never wear but don't think of anything as naff. Wear what makes you feel good and sod everyone else is my motto.

wowhie · 26/06/2021 09:29

Yes I listed Kate Middleton as someone who looks outdated & naff to me. Lip fillers have come up frequently on this thread, are you saying only certain classes get them?

Faffandahalf · 26/06/2021 09:30

That seems to be it jahe but tbh white stuff/Boden/sea salt/joules etc is really really naff clothing. And that’s mega middle class. Nobody looks cool in that.
But that’s ok. People like what they like. Each to their own blah blah.

PurpleyBlue · 26/06/2021 09:30

I don't really pay much attention to what others are wearing as long as they are happy.

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 26/06/2021 09:31

Fake tan - never seen it done well

KittyWindbag · 26/06/2021 09:31

I love fake nails, fake tan and if I could afford it I’d definitely get myself some good fake hair! Perhaps other people think these things look gaudy or over-done but to me, there is a sense of fun and dress-up in these things that is not present in other ‘cool’ or understated trends. To me fashion and presentation should be fun.

When I think naff, I always think the word means something outdated or uncool. And I come back to it, it’s hair! Agree with whoever said Kate Middletown’s hair is kind of naff. She’s too young for that ultra perfect hair on top of the very sedated clothes. But then she’s a royal, and she has to follow rules.

FourTurnings · 26/06/2021 09:31

Jahebejrjr That’s not quite true. I would add ‘jumper in pastel shade knotted casually around shoulders’ on a man, which is pure middle class style. Also not keen on flip flops on men (much loved by my DH who is very MC).

wowhie · 26/06/2021 09:31

@Faffandahalf yep fair more naff to me than joggers.

habibihabibi · 26/06/2021 09:32

NotImpossible
Oooh forgot the tan and makeup

tango oompa loompa tan
contouring that looks like you have been face first in bovril
plastic bejewed nails,
grouper lips,
tippex teeth,
sharpie broad black brows,
bristly loo brush lashes
barbie gone bad extensions

Jahebejrjr · 26/06/2021 09:33

I am saying this is a thread designed to poke fun at poorer women’s style.

TheVolturi · 26/06/2021 09:34

Those sports leggings that look sprayed on, worn with a short top so you can see the whole bum cheeks.

TheVolturi · 26/06/2021 09:34

@Jahebejrjr

I am saying this is a thread designed to poke fun at poorer women’s style.
It's definitely not only poorer women that do these things!
KineticSand · 26/06/2021 09:35

Clothes with a leather look element which is obviously plastic

wowhie · 26/06/2021 09:35

@Jahebejrjr I disagree & think the responses are quite varied & also mention men.

HermioneGrunger · 26/06/2021 09:35

Ruining a nice outfit with a pair of clumpy sports trainers or an anorak

I don't get the anorak hate, lots of us live in the uk and it rains a fair bit, why would I want to wear a nice outfit to work and then get soaked wearing an inappropriate coat for the sake of fashion?

Jahebejrjr · 26/06/2021 09:35

Men can be working- class too.

wowhie · 26/06/2021 09:35

Except lip fillers which is seems pretty unanimous.
