Naff things in other people's fashion sense

I know that it is a question of each to his own etc but what do you find naff in other people's fashion sense?

OP posts:
Oldraver · 26/06/2021 09:47

Flip flops. They should be be for the pool, shower, beach etc

wowhie · 26/06/2021 09:48

@Jahebejrjr so hang on which is it? First of all this thread was making fun of poorer people & you accused posters of switching to middle class crimes so I just pointed out what I said in my first post.

We do not have to have the same opinions & like the same things. I think Boden is uncool & boring. I think Kate Middletons style (largely hair) is ageing. Where did I say anyone has to aspire to dress like me? Lots of people will think my fashion is "naff", but I don't care.

Jahebejrjr · 26/06/2021 09:48

Of course you do @HalzTangz

Oldraver · 26/06/2021 09:49

@superram

I will talk about me, I wear trainers all the time, often with frilly ankle socks (am old). Wear chub rub shorts. Other people-anything I can see up, down or through. Cut out shoulder tops (just why). Lip fillers.
Ooh I want some frilly ankle socks, where did you get them ?
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 26/06/2021 09:49

That horrible hippy brand . Gudrun Sjororesen?

Yuk yuk.

Jahebejrjr · 26/06/2021 09:50

We have a dreadful class system in the UK. I am reminded of that every time I come onto mumsnet.

wowhie · 26/06/2021 09:52

Today I'm wearing some arizona love sandals with beads on, lots of people will think they are awful but I love them.

LST · 26/06/2021 09:52

@Oldraver

Flip flops. They should be be for the pool, shower, beach etc
Or for someone who struggles with putting shoes on. nice to know I'm even judged on my fucking flip flops
BrilliantBetty · 26/06/2021 09:53

Those bright yellow plastic rain coats. I think Joules or Boden do them. So very strange to want to look like a fisherman, too bright for most people and just.. ugly. Double points if paired with matching wellies.

Bob hair cut. Unless you have a beautifully angular face. More often than not draw attention to a chick neck or a double chin.

Veterinari · 26/06/2021 09:54

@HalzTangz

Mutton dressed as lamb, older people in younger people's clothing is just a super tacky look
And a nice dollop of ageism thrown in too. Lovely
BrilliantBetty · 26/06/2021 09:54

*thick neck

LST · 26/06/2021 09:55

@veterinari ageism, sexism, abelism classism.. all out on mn today

Oldraver · 26/06/2021 09:56

I live a patterned shoe, had some lovely embroidered ones a few years ago I've never been able to replace

I've always wondered why most shows in this country are boring plain colours

HalzTangz · 26/06/2021 09:56

@Jahebejrjr

Of course you do *@HalzTangz*
Yes I do actually, typically the ladies who lunch whilst hubby works to pay the beauty treatments. Most working Class (using the words you stated) can't afford regular tans, regular Nils, regular teeth treatment, regular hair extensions etc
Jahebejrjr · 26/06/2021 09:56

I am just enjoying the spectacle of watching posters tie themselves in knots trying to think of as many middle-class fashion ‘misdemeanours’ as possible.

Jahebejrjr · 26/06/2021 09:59

@HalzTangz Have you ever actually spent time in a working-class town? They are full to the brim with salons. People like to spend what little disposable income they have on themselves (rightly so) because it is part of the working-class culture to be well groomed and because it is a welcome distraction from their lives. You are clueless.

PurpleyBlue · 26/06/2021 09:59

Why can't people just be left to enjoy clothes and fashion however they want without having people sneering over it? It's one thing saying it's outdated and fashion has moved on but this looks like yet another stick to beat people with.

Jahebejrjr · 26/06/2021 10:00

Also @HalzTangz I am happy to use the term working-class. It is nothing to be ashamed of.

wowhie · 26/06/2021 10:00

@Oldraver tbf they are black with different coloured beads but yes I love an interesting shoe. I get a lot of my shoes abroad particularly sandals.

I wear blue eyeliner on the inside of my lower eyelids.

This, despite reading that it's really old fashioned, ageing (all the rage in the 80s), even looked bad on the Princess of Wales in that interview and - yes! - is naff.

I just still think I look better with it (à la the PoW, who apparently used to apply it herself after her makeup artist had finished and hadn't used it because of the reasons above).

I always assume that people who, to me, look "naff" or seemed to have accentuated their worse features as opposed to their best must have some reason (like they feel better for it or think it looks nice) for making their choices.

Doesn't stop me being judgey, mind, and having "What were they thinking?" thoughts.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 26/06/2021 10:14

@TheVolturi

Those sports leggings that look sprayed on, worn with a short top so you can see the whole bum cheeks.
What else am I supposed to wear to go running when it's not warm enough for shorts? I don't think you can get sweat wicking sports tops which are long enough to cover all of your bum.

Could you stop with the working class stereotypes please? We aren't all one homogeneous population.

And no we don't all wear fake tan/eyelashes/nails

In fact a lot of those things were fashion trends of certain age groups regardless of class, popularised by the Kardashians for example.

justanotherneighinparadise · 26/06/2021 10:14

I’m not keen on knee high boots teamed with a dress or skirt higher than he top of the boot unless the wearer is tall/young or slim. There’s something really dated about it.

Jahebejrjr · 26/06/2021 10:18

@WaltzingBetty what the hell are you talking about? Stereotypes? I see it differently. A bunch of people living the life they want to live and wearing the clothes and make-up they want to wear. Extraordinary that on a thread like this you pick me to attack about stereotyping. I am working-class too. Don’t have fillers, fake tan or whatever else people choose to do, but I dislike my friends who do being looked down upon for their choices .
