Which engagement ring should I choose?

DH and I have had a horrendous year with lots of ups and downs. One of the downs was me losing my engagement ring which wasn't to my taste but meant a lot since it was from him. He's agreed to buy me another but this time I've insisted it'll be a joint venture and I'll have the final say since I'll be wearing it. The trouble is, all the rings I like, he hates. So I've made a shortlist and have decided that I like this one:

DH is disgusted and calls it an old lady ring (I'm mid 30s). What does everyone think? Is it over the top? Is it vulgar? I love it- the solitaires, trilogies, etc. just aren't doing it for this time around :/

I don’t like the first. Sorry. The second one is much nicer and suits you better.

Marty13 · 26/06/2021 01:20

To be fully honest, I love neither. The top one is too bulky and the second one too delicate for my taste. If I had to pick I'd pick the small one though.

But I also think it'll be your ring, and if I was your partner I'd be happy for you to choose whatever you like.

Can you compromise and get something in between in terms of bulk ?

HandforthParishCouncilClerk · 26/06/2021 01:21

That first one is hideous, sorry - it looks like you have a cheap diamanté belt buckle on your finger.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/06/2021 01:22

Are those photos of your hand with the ring on? they don't look like the same hand. The first hand looks older and maybe isn't doing the ring justice ( I'm not convinced though). The second is ok but bland, and doesn't appear to fit - too tight and high up the finger.

Any other options?

QueenBee52 · 26/06/2021 01:27

I LOVE the first one... it's very Art Deco.. but I agree the second one suits your hand better ..

I do love the first one though 🌸💕

Ladylokidoki · 26/06/2021 01:28

Its so difficult because we can't see them in person and it's really down to our tastes.

But to me the top one looks that busy, it looks like a fashion/fake ring. Or maybe something a very aging heiress, in an old movie would wear. I wouldn't see it and guess it was an engagement ring.

The second one is too dainty to me. Neither would be my choice.

But I feel so bad saying it, because if you like it. That's what counts. I am so sorry Blush

JM10 · 26/06/2021 01:28

The first one looks like a cheap costume ring. The second is much nicer.

Have you just been searching random pictures of rings on the internet? These do not look like the same hands!

I love the first one! Bling all the way. Here’s mine…

don’t like the first one at all. the second one is far better, more a classic engagement ring.

DramaAlpaca · 26/06/2021 01:43

Well, it's you who'll be wearing it so ultimately it's up to you.

FWIW I don't like the first one at all (sorry) though I'm generally very fond of vintage styles, and the second one is a bit unexciting.

I chose my own engagement ring. DH knew it was important to me to do so and wouldn't have picked a ring for me as I have quite specific taste. I adore it still, 30 plus years later.

Hughbert · 26/06/2021 01:44

The first one reminds me of the ring Pete produces when he remarries Dawn in Gavin and Stacey.
Your hands really are totally different in each picture.

whichringshouldichoose · 26/06/2021 01:44

These are not me wearing the rings! The first one is Art Deco and the second one Edwardian. I love vintage rings which is why I want something distinctive. My original engagement ring was a solitaire and it felt it was bland :/

Maybe this'll help choose the right ring- I work with vulnerable adults and don't want to look too out of place in that setting. At the same time, I'm quite loud in my clothes and love making an effort so maybe my ring should reflect that?

The belt buckle comment made me laugh- it actually does but I like the ring BlushI think it'll fill my finger out nicely. On the other hand, where does my wedding band go? (I like wearing both rings on one finger. )

Beautiful ring! I wear (wore) my rings two tone too Smile

Don't like the first one at all. 2nd one is nicer but if you want my honest opinion I'd go for a solitaire. Much more classier.

whichringshouldichoose · 26/06/2021 01:49

Managed to find a pic (cropped) of my original ring- it was big but just so boring. I want a completely different one now.

Can anyone suggest any alternatives.

Hmmmm. I'd say none of these suit what you say you want, which seems to be something distinctive and unusual but not brash? Also seems like the rings in every photo you posted are too small for the people's fingers (I realise some of them are not you) which makes the rings look awful.

If I was you I'd go for something classic but with an unusual setting, like a floating setting, if you want something unusual.

Tbh the rings you posted look a bit like costume jewellery 😬 What metal are they made from and what is the diamond grade? Have they been certified?

GertietheGherkin · 26/06/2021 01:58

The 1st one is more of a dress/ costume ring. It's a bit tacky.
The 2nd one is a bit samey... Everyone either goes for solitaire or trilogy.
I'd keep looking and see others you may be able to compromise on.
Happy searching 💍

In terms of design I mean.

And why are you choosing the ring?

I mean, I read your post. But you lost the ring and now you are saying you should tell him which one to buy you instead. Confused Sounds a bit weird. Surely you'd be feeling terrible for losing the ring he gave you, not setting out conditions for an acceptable replacement?
