Which engagement ring should I choose?

DH and I have had a horrendous year with lots of ups and downs. One of the downs was me losing my engagement ring which wasn't to my taste but meant a lot since it was from him. He's agreed to buy me another but this time I've insisted it'll be a joint venture and I'll have the final say since I'll be wearing it. The trouble is, all the rings I like, he hates. So I've made a shortlist and have decided that I like this one:

DH is disgusted and calls it an old lady ring (I'm mid 30s). What does everyone think? Is it over the top? Is it vulgar? I love it- the solitaires, trilogies, etc. just aren't doing it for this time around :/

Go vintage & interesting, you’ll get more bang for your buck than a standard single/3 stone. Which is really just the value of the stone quality.

I legit have never heard of a setting referred to as ‘ziggurat’? after 10 years in the industry, those would be called ‘stepped shoulders’.

I’d recommend a trip to the West End to try on a variety of styles as you seem to have a really mixed bag of what you like. Whittle that down first and any jewellers can source a style you like then. Try the Burlington/Piccadilly Arcades.

I absolutely LOVE the first one, but this thread just demonstrates we all like different things. Go with the one YOU like.

ShouldersBackChestOutChinUp · 26/06/2021 07:36

The first is ugly. Really ugly.

The second is boring.

headintheproverbial · 26/06/2021 07:38

I like that third one you posted with three stones. The first 3 stone ring to me looks very 90s and a bit naff.

Also really love the Art Deco one. So if that's you're fave I'd go for it.

ScrumptiousBears · 26/06/2021 07:45

@VroomVrooom

Sorry - that first ring is NOT Art Deco. It is really, really not nice.

If you’re looking for something Art Deco, why not try a ziggurat feature…

Loving these rings. This is my favourite so far. Not engaged so can't offer any real input 🤣
Helpel · 26/06/2021 07:46

Have you looked at Vera Wang? Obviously pretty commercial, which might appease your fiance, but lots of different arrangements of diamonds

Si1ver · 26/06/2021 08:00

I've never heard of the term ziggurat either, but it's exactly like my engagement ring and I love it.

FAQs · 26/06/2021 08:08

That first one is um interesting, I think I looks a tacky, third one seems the nicest.

pollywollydoodler · 26/06/2021 08:15

A ziggurat is a pyramid that is stepped by terracing..it's used to describe Art Deco jewellery and furniture

This is another one of our (my) shortlisted ones:
This one is beautiful!! The first one I'm really not keen on sorry and the second the setting too dainty as others have said
MindTheBumps · 26/06/2021 08:25

I hate the first one
I like the second one but don't think it's for you

Third one is the winner hands down!

This one is lovely.
7catsisnotenough · 26/06/2021 08:28

Another vote for the 3rd one! Very unusual and classy 👍🏼

Here's a picture of mine, I love vintage styles 😍

You’ll be the one wearing it you should be the one getting the final say.

cittigirl · 26/06/2021 08:32

The 3rd one you posted is lovely. I'd go for that!

LivingLaVidaCovid · 26/06/2021 08:33

I think your first ring was impressively massive but mega snooze.
Agree with others the third one (hexagonal trilogy) is the nicest.

This is mine please don't judge the sausage fingers lock down has been hard on me!!!!

I also love bling and art deco style so maybe it gives you some other inspiration

Going against the grain here but I love the first choice.

MrsPerfect12 · 26/06/2021 08:38

The third is stunning! The first one is truly awful and I agree with your DH it's very very old lady - I'm sorry I know that's not what you wanted to hear.

ShanghaiDiva · 26/06/2021 08:42

I like elements of the first one, but it is a little too chunky and does look like a belt buckle.
The second one is uninspiring.
The third is my choice of the three.
@LivingLaVidaCovid love your rings!

viewsoftheshard · 26/06/2021 08:43

I love the first one. But then I went for an eternity ring as my engagement ring as wanted something a bit different. If I had to choose again, I would definitely go vintage, there have been some beautiful examples in threads recently.

LaurieFairyCake · 26/06/2021 08:44

I also love the first one

Anonymouslyposting · 26/06/2021 08:44

The first one is hideous. Bulky, boxy, just looks like stones shoved together to make a big blob without any design. But obviously it doesn’t matter what I think! However, while it’s fine for you to choose your own ring I wouldn’t want to choose one DH disliked as it’s meant to be from him.

I like your DH’s more simple suggestion but I agree it is a bit standard and if you don’t love it then it’s not right. Some of the ones @VroomVrooom suggested are lovely if you want something a bit unusual but still pretty.

IdblowJonSnow · 26/06/2021 08:45

I like the sunburst one that @VroomVrooom posted.

wowhie · 26/06/2021 08:53

I like the first one. 2nd nope

EversoDelighted · 26/06/2021 08:53

I really didn't like number 1 either. Number 2 is a bit too delicate as others have said, and I don't like solitaires either. I like the third one you posted, the three octagons setting, I've never seen one like that before and also the "ziggurat" one.
