Which engagement ring should I choose?

DH and I have had a horrendous year with lots of ups and downs. One of the downs was me losing my engagement ring which wasn't to my taste but meant a lot since it was from him. He's agreed to buy me another but this time I've insisted it'll be a joint venture and I'll have the final say since I'll be wearing it. The trouble is, all the rings I like, he hates. So I've made a shortlist and have decided that I like this one:

DH is disgusted and calls it an old lady ring (I'm mid 30s). What does everyone think? Is it over the top? Is it vulgar? I love it- the solitaires, trilogies, etc. just aren't doing it for this time around :/

Which engagement ring should I choose?

Sorry OP but the first is ugly in my opinion and looks really fake due to its size.

The second one is boring

The third is my favourite

But I also love the style suggested by @Nancydrawn

Obviously it's all personal taste though!!

wowhie · 26/06/2021 08:56

I love that sunburst one!

DGFB · 26/06/2021 08:56

The third one on your shortlist is gorgeous! Don’t like the first at all

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 26/06/2021 08:56

As much as I think the man should not get a day in the price of jewellery you have to wear, I agree with him that's awful and tacky.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 26/06/2021 08:58

Honestly, I don't really like any of them, but then I'm not keen on round stones. I would say your dps is the best of a bad bunch. Sorry.

@VroomVrooom

…or a sunburst…
Love that ring! What site did you take the photo from please?

This is another one of our (my) shortlisted ones:
I love the trilogy one! Your old ring was so classic and stunning

The “belt buckle” Grin ring isn’t an engagement ring, it’s a dress ring.

Are you looking on Etsy? Gatsby? They have some absolutely stunning rings!

#3

covidandborisandworld · 26/06/2021 09:04

First one looks like a knuckle duster. It's really awful

Keep
Looking

LivingWithWeeds · 26/06/2021 09:05

#3 is my favourite although I do like your original solitaire so we may not have the same tastes.

I think he should let you choose though!

MadeForThis · 26/06/2021 09:06

Third is gorgeous

MzHz · 26/06/2021 09:12

The other option…. Buy the gemstones and get a jeweller to make you one that means something to you.

This is what we’ve just done and although I do love a good shop when it comes to sparkles, knowing that we chose the stones and had the design made and knowing all the detail that went into it, it means so much more

AND costs a lot less!

Cost about £1k to get the platinum designed and the stones set. What you spend on the rocks is on top of that, but you buy them from gemstone dealers

We bought ours from a HG gemstone place over phone/email and photos :)

@VroomVrooom

…or something just a little more elegant.
I loved this ring! Although I couldn’t link it properly! I want it!
PippinStar · 26/06/2021 09:23

Love the ziggurat one!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 26/06/2021 09:23

The third one is the best of the bunch. I want to love the first one but it’s somehow just not quite right for me. The second one is probably too traditional for what you’re looking for.

WithLoveFromMyselfToYourself · 26/06/2021 09:25

The second trilogy is gorgeous.

This is beautiful and the octagonal design makes it interesting.
SwayingInTime · 26/06/2021 09:31

Third one is gorgeous, love the octagonal setting behind the diamonds.

Chickychickydodah · 26/06/2021 09:34

I like most of them all but not the first.it’s more a dress ring…

Tuberoses · 26/06/2021 09:34

I like the first one but it’s obviously white gold and has started to discolour, you can see the yellow coming through. It needs sending away to be refinished. The second one looks cheap. I like the third option.

The thing to be aware of with vintage rings is that they’re hard to resize. Jewellers will tell you they can do it but the ring ends up misshapen, bent and possibly even cracked. And then they’ll try to push it onto you and hope you don’t notice the tiny cracks and imperfections. Like that first ring for example - there’s no way to resize that. Look for a vintage ring in your size or just buy a new one in a vintage style.

VroomVrooom · 26/06/2021 09:35

Yes, as a PP said, a ziggurat in deco terms is a stepped pyramid - think the Empire State Building, the Chrysler building, etc. Very classic Art Deco.
