@Judystilldreamsofhorses

It is going to be a nightmare to maintain in terms of time and cost both.
This. It looks blonde because the toner washes out. It will need constant up keep
lightitup2 · 28/05/2021 12:24

I'm not sure why she did it.
Looks like blonde highlights to me, plus extensions Hmm
I'm not sure how she thinks she's doing women a favour by 'going grey' when she's done the above?

RayonSunrise · 28/05/2021 12:25

Yeah, I realise that it could be really challenging/high maintenance to keep cool-toned. And I suspect that when you do see it done (like the Jack Martin Instragram) it's something that the colourist has really specialised in, so you really have to work to find someone with the right skills. This is all why I am glad to see this article, and I'd like to see more that don't have the PPD restriction. And I would also like to keep an eye on Sali's hair and see what she does with it/how it changes as her roots grow in and she finds the level of maintenance she's comfortable with.

This sort of info is really hard to find. If you look hard into "maintaining grey hair" it's all about 20somethings rocking a cool silver do, not about us slowly-greying types trying to work out when and how to step away from pretending to still have our youthful hair colour.

HelenHywater · 28/05/2021 12:46

Has she dyed her hair grey? I couldn't work out whether that was lockdown grey?

@Cocolapew and @borntobequiet are yours dyed or natural? I am 50 and have a few grey hairs in one spot. The rest is very dark still. But I'd like to be grey all over! (maybe in a year or two).

Am wondering whether just to take the plunge and dye it - I think I'll be waiting for years until I'm actually naturally grey. (this isn't a stealth boast - I am aware that 50 something women aren't mean to have naturally almost black hair).

Serpenta · 28/05/2021 12:50

@HelenHywater are the greys in one spot so that they'd form a streak? I think that is such a chic look, black hair with a streak of white or silver.

Cocolapew · 28/05/2021 12:50

In the first photo I dyed it after bleaching it white. The second is my natural colour.

Cocolapew · 28/05/2021 12:52

If you're on FB check out Grombre Uk and the Silver Revolution, theres a lot of transitioning photos.

Yes it's a streak which appeared over lockdown! I have embraced it for now.

PersonaNonGarter · 28/05/2021 12:56

Sali Hughes is gorgeous. It’s so depressing that ‘going grey’ looks like such hard work, even for someone like her. That hair is a nightmare to maintain and despite her protestations I bet she’s regretting it already.

Fiver says she dyes her hair back the moment a non-allergic colour becomes available.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 28/05/2021 13:02

But is she "going grey*? Or has she dyed her hair grey?

I think there is a big difference there.

Having said that, she looks good.

Blossomtoes · 28/05/2021 13:03

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

Both. She’s 30% grey and has dyed the rest to blend in.
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 28/05/2021 13:08

Yes, but in the video she's not going grey, she's having her hair dyed.

MrsBunHat · 28/05/2021 13:23

She looks great. I'm 50 and my hair isn't grey enough to look good.

Yes me too. I wouldn't actually mind being totally grey/white and then maybe experimenting with some interesting colours. Instead I'm still mostly dark haired in my 50s with patchy bits of white. Not a chic streak, just bits at the front that make it look like I have a receding hairline if I don't dye them to match.

So all the "go grey naturally!!! embrace the grey!" stuff just makes me feel left out :o I would if I could!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 28/05/2021 13:29

If Sali Hughes is 30% grey, surely 70% will grow back brunette and the upkeep will be absolutely non-stop? I would be so nervous of another lockdown and being stuck with a VERY high maintenance head, and no way of maintaining it!

MrsBunHat · 28/05/2021 13:32

Yes exactly Judy, this approach is only possible if you have plenty of funds, constant access to colourist and don't mind your hair being bleached which is not guaranteed to go well at all.

Mylittlesandwich · 28/05/2021 13:35

She looks great but the whole "going grey" thing is still an issue. For example my DH has had some grey hair for quite a while. People will comment that he's got the "salt and pepper" look going on. He's never had any negative comments related to his hair. I've recently noticed a few grey strands (in 28) and at the moment I feel confident that I won't dye it, I'll just let it go grey, I'm not a hair dye fan really. I've already had comments about that being "brave" that I'll definitely change my mind.

She dyed her hair grey she didn't "go grey".

borntobequiet · 28/05/2021 14:09

@HelenHywater
All natural. When I turned 60 I stopped dyeing it and cut it very short, let it grow out naturally. The pic (and I did really need a wash) was taken last year. Since then I’ve let it grow to past shoulder length - can’t decide whether to keep it long or get it cut again. Every time I think I’ll get it cut there’s another lockdown...

borntobequiet · 28/05/2021 14:11

It - hair - really needed a wash. I was clean!

Shareddriveagghh · 28/05/2021 14:55

I became allergic to hair dye in my mid forties when peri menopausal, my Dr said hormonal changes probably. I also became allergic to scented products.

I’m at the not quite grey enough stage and have been for five years now. What I did was live with it but I also bought a very expensive wig which I wear occasionally when I get sick of the salt and pepper.

Anyone that doesn’t agree with Sali’s rhetoric = troll

Hmm

Confused
Serpenta · 28/05/2021 15:19

Who has trolled her on this thread?

I have no way of judging what that comment is out of context.
