I'm not sure of the ethics of still going for free hair dyes/cuts when so many businesses have been closed for so long.

Blossomtoes · 27/05/2021 13:53

@Oblomov21

I can't see the grey. It just looks really highlighted. This is really disappointing.
I thought the same. It’s a long way from my idea of grey. She annoys me with the reference to fetishisation of youth when she fills her face with botox.
sourcherie · 27/05/2021 13:57

It looks lovely, shiny, silvery-grey in the IG video; but horrible in that photo! 1980s crispy highlights (and she looks like she's about to cry).

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 27/05/2021 13:58

I wondered about that too, @Housewife2010 - I think the training academy bit is fine, that's standard that they need models so the trainees can learn. My salon has this on a Monday night and as long as people are prepared to spend longer than normal on a cut/colour they get a great service free, overseen by the salon directors. My place tends to have a particular "theme" each week, so looking for people going from long to short, red colours, curls, or whatever.

The gifted cuts don't seem quite right to me in the current climate. But I guess it is huge publicity for them that she posts about it on Instagram, so it evens out?

JaninaDuszejko · 27/05/2021 14:19

I think it looks like what it is, well done expensive highlights. Going grey slowly and naturally is what men do and it costs them nothing. Women being expected to have an expensive dye job whatever the final colour is still an additional expense for women and dyed grey hair is more liberating than dyed red hair.

Lottapianos · 27/05/2021 14:25

'She annoys me with the reference to fetishisation of youth when she fills her face with botox.'

Yes I agree with you. I understand why she does the Botox etc but then own it and be consistent

RayonSunrise · 27/05/2021 14:51

I really enjoyed this article. I've been thinking about doing something similar myself when more of my head is leaning grey, and it's not easy to find information about how to go artificially into grey when the default is to go blonde or just stop dying your hair when you can't be arsed to colour it anymore! When I've looked into it though I've noticed it's hard to find much info, other than ONE colourist in California on Insta who seems to specialise.

I have been wondering if toning over time is an issue, and if Sali's apparent blondeness in her pics is related any way to the PPD-free toner her colourist used.

TheHoneyFactory · 27/05/2021 15:10

@ThursdayWeld

Does she mention that she's also had hair extensions put in?
i had no idea how many influencers used hair extensions, i felt really thick when it was explained they had them for volume - there is muggins me buying the loreal products she recommended wondering why it all still fell flat. I really liked SH but she is very much an influencer these days (her choice). i cant stand #presstreatment in this current global climate - it feels so wrong. i quite like her hair (but am curious at how the upkeep and bleach will effect the texture/health)
Journeynotdestination · 27/05/2021 16:16

It looks ok.

Housewife2010 · 28/05/2021 06:51

Re gifted cuts, Hershesons seem to give them to all the influencers. I know this is their marketing strategy, but it completely puts me off them.

I suspect it was also very expensive and will need to be regularly redone for the roots so it’s not really a realistic option for many women.

LadyWithLapdog · 28/05/2021 09:38

Her brow seems to move (someone mentioned Botox above).

Cocolapew · 28/05/2021 10:15

This is what I think of when someone dyes their hair grey

She’s said quite openly that she has “tweakments”.
LadyWithLapdog · 28/05/2021 10:51

I only know of her as a journalist as I’m not on Ig. I thought Botox and fillers were out and the more natural look is in. Or is that only for 20 somethings who don’t need it anyway. Not that anyone actually needs it.

Floisme · 28/05/2021 11:18

I like it and I enjoyed the article but - as she says herself - it's a high maintenance look, as is any dyed hair.

Oblomov21 · 28/05/2021 11:22

I AM really angry about this. I don't know it's bothered me so much.

But like Cocalapew those photos are what I think of when someone decides to finally go grey, and has professional help to dye it, super expert, to make it look really good.

This is NOT that. At all.
I'm confused as to what's she's trying to achieve here.

Ethics? When there are freebies available? Hahahahaha!!!!!

no in general the tweakments are very much prevalent in Instagram land....just rarely disclosed and it's all put down to the miracle sponsered cream/serum of the week that's giving them that fresh look. I think SH refers to it as baby botox (but I've never seen it referred to like that anywhere else). I have no prob with botox/fillers/laser at all - its their (influences) faces. but find it disingenuous and erodes my faith in the face products they try to sell/promote with a face full of it.
Blossomtoes · 28/05/2021 11:37

My problem with SH and botox is her disapproval of the fetishisation of youth in that article. It’s so hypocritical.

Nightbear · 28/05/2021 11:47

If you look at the video rather than the still photo it is grey and it looks lovely. It’s beautifully done so that it will blend with her natural regrowth - she’s 30% grey so will get dark roots. Natural grey comes in all shades so criticising it for not being uniform or steel grey is rather silly. I say this as someone whose mother started to go grey in her 20s, was white-grey by 50 and passed through all the shades on her way!

RayonSunrise · 28/05/2021 12:14

Agree, Nightbear. I don't really understand the comments about maintenance. If she's 30% grey, the whole point is that she didn't want to grow it out and have a clear colourline - if it grows out 30% grey and continues to grey naturally, that's still a win. When it comes to colour, she has an allergy that limits the products she can use. Showing Jack Martin's pics off Instagram don't mean much, as he's likely using products that contain PPD.

When I still had acres of lockdown roots (around 15% grey at the top of my head) I asked my hairdresser if it was possible to give me grey highlights (note, not even whole head grey) instead of blonde ones so I could start to lean into greying a bit, and I was told to forget it. It's useful to me to see that there are places in London that will have a go at "leaning into grey" colour.

I'd still like to see something similar tried on this side of the pond with PPD-containing colour. If anyone can point me towards more case studies, I'd be chuffed.

Blossomtoes · 28/05/2021 12:18

Perhaps the reason you were told to forget it is because it’s really hard to get right @RayonSunrise. My hairdresser had to explain to another client that he couldn’t replicate my colour for her because my silver hair is natural. There are apparently literally no products that can reproduce it.

Floisme · 28/05/2021 12:20

My comment about maintenance was simply to highlight (if you'll pardon the pun) that this is not 'going grey' in its traditional sense. It's a very considered look (I like it) and the upkeep, as Sali herself states, will be an absolute bugger.
