Blush That's the lazy Brit attitude to learning languages combined with failing eyesight - I could have sworn there was an 'i' between the 'r' and the 'k'.

quirkychick · 29/06/2021 11:48

flo, I think it's just your brain making sense of what you see. In English you would have a vowel, so you see one. (That's my excuse, anyway Grin). I thought Swedish flo looks very Swedish/Scandinavian with that healthy, outdoor look that a Swedish friend of mine has. I am totally in love with her jewellery and linen. I might have quite a few similar footwear but I'm not anywhere so minimal.

quirkychick · 29/06/2021 11:52

Not quite the same as her long, silver ring, but my recent Vinted purchase silver ring, with older (mostly) Etsy bangles.

Such a missed opportunity her name isn't Frik because Frik & Flo sounds very marketable (edible crayons anyone?). We rarely use Ms and Mrs here too (or Mr). To be honest they sound possitively medieval if I'd translate them, it's basically milady and miyounglady but miyounglady without the mi bit is also a teacher (female) although they only really get called that if children don't know their name (always first name), so it's another class' teacher, usually, or sometimes they're teacher first name.

Nice ring quirky. Speaking of teachers and Vinted my feed is currently flooded with teacher gifts 🤣

OP posts:
quirkychick · 29/06/2021 12:38

I like the idea of getting rid of titles, isn't Mr from Master and Mrs from Mistress?

Frik & Flo sounds great Smile. We need to do teachers' presents, but will probably naive biscuits, as lots of staff in dd2's special school class. We are currently isolating, waiting for a home covid test (again) as dd2 has a temperature Sad.

botemp · 29/06/2021 13:41

Oh poor DD2, she's CV isn't she? Hope it's something else🤞Has she not been vaccinated yet, or is she still too young?

We still use master here but then you're either a male teacher or sometimes a judge but I think the latter refers to having a master degree but they seem to be the only profession doing that 🤷

I do prefer it but I think it's less about taking the emphasis of sex and marital status of women out of it and more about informality, even in business correspondence there isn't much of it. The way Germans and French do formal letters are really terrifying to the Dutch. I think the Brits can do quite scary formal letters too but not quite as scary.

OP posts:
quirkychick · 29/06/2021 13:53

Dd2 has Down's Syndrome, she seems to be sleeping a lot at night, watching YouTube and eating soup and jelly. Not onerous, but hoping she's negative. She had a negative lateral flow test, but with symptoms we need the PCR test.

I remember written French being very formal from A level. I think British letters are less formal than the way I learnt (and had to teach) them at school, now.

Redandblue11 · 29/06/2021 18:56

DeepL is scarily good Shock audl!
I just tested it, even with some Argentinean Spanish type words , that could be misinterpreted in Spain and picked up the local variants and put the right context!

I also enjoy and slightly envy Swedish Flo…

I am excited again as the flower shows are coming back this year and I am attending my first one in person for over two years! what to wear ! Decisions Smile

Redandblue11 · 29/06/2021 19:00

I hope DD2 test is negative quirky 🤞🏼

quirkychick · 30/06/2021 16:22

Thanks, red, still waiting for test results, either today or tomorrow.

CatherineMaitland · 01/07/2021 06:39

Another vote for DeepL, bo's skirt, Flo's jeans, Wales, Ireland, linen everything, and quirky's ring. Hope the results are good for your daughter quirky and that everyone can be reunited with family soon!

Haven't bought anything except a house. Thanks for all your good wishes - they helped a lot.

botemp · 01/07/2021 07:46

Bought as in bought and exchanged, Catherine? Are we really allowed to celebrate now 🙏

Still keeping 🤞for your dd quirky.

Yay Wine and Gin for Catherine!

Do you get the news today quirky?

quirkychick · 01/07/2021 11:56

Thanks all, dd2 is negative, thankfully. I wonder if she might have hand, foot and mouth (again) though only in her mouth, as it's very sore/swollen, poor thing. She is currently laughing at silly videos on YouTube, so not too bad!

That's great news, CatherineMaitland!

I have found Swedish flo on IG, which is in English . Her clothes are amazing!

banivani · 01/07/2021 13:16

Catching up - good news about your daughter Quirky ❤️ Glad she’s better!

Catherine - dare we say congratulations?

CatherineMaitland · 01/07/2021 20:53

Exchanged & completed, celebrate away. :)

botemp · 02/07/2021 10:27

HURRAAAAAAY!! 🎉🎉🎉 I'm so pleased for you Catherine, enjoy your new home Smile

Good to hear your DD is Covid free, quirky.

I was in Antwerp yesterday and managed to get some lovely fabric at the Dries van Noten sample sale but it's giving me cutting anxiety already as it's patterned and I've never really worked with pattern before, except in a reworking of an existing dress.

Also tried on some things from the brand Elle linked previously, La Collection, of the very pricey basics but enviable looking jumpsuit.

I'll update with pics later, although I don't have many as Antwerp is very much a city of boutiques with mirrors outside the changing room and overly eager staff. I had a lovely time being somewhere else for a change and visiting very different shops, but I'm rather achey from being out of practice from marathon shopping and I've got a tiny blister on the side of my toe

Catherine That’s great news, I’m so delighted that you got there in the end!

quirky that’s a relief about your daughter. Great job with the trousers.

I’m also please with the stupidly expensive sandals which haven’t required any breaking in, unlike my cheaper ones. I will try to do a side by side at some point.

The linen curtains sound really lovely red Can we see them when they’re done?

I like Swedish flo’s converse, really cool look.

Interested to hear what you thought of La Collection botemp

Things are starting to open up a bit here so I’m at least wearing something other than strict WFH garb and we’ll be back in the office over the next couple of months so I’ll get to wear some of my clothes again.

botemp · 02/07/2021 14:17

Ok, La Collection, I'm still firmly of the opinion that it's overpriced, and then some, but it's not entirely soulless and without merrit either. I do feel that it's a bit hit and miss, some items have had more thought of design put into it than others. The jumpsuit was nice but just didn't work with my proportions, the bust darts were in the wrong place, the neckline was borderline choking me, the dramatic back wasn't all that dramatic on me, as again, hit in the wrong place, etc. etc.

So taller person Elle will probably look great in it (size up one was the advice though). The trousers half is similar in shape to the Joseph silk trousers we both own (which incidentally look great with the stupidly expensive sandals) but without going in at the waist.

Although I did see when googling for links here, Yoox has some items including a jumpsuit that's almost the same except with a more closed back and looking somewhat more matte, which makes it somewhat more casual wearable IMO, it comes up at €420 in my market for reference and they've been running loads of extra discounts lately. And wrt pricing, apparently La Collection don't discount, ever, unless occasionally if they retire a design. I assume the Yoox stuff is from when Net A Porter briefly carried the brand.

It's all a bit hocus pocus but if you go the site of what the shop used to be called (it was just a high end multi label boutique) Damoy they have lots of La Collection at something like 70% off and that kind of reveals the stupid markup, everything is final sale and no exchanges though, even though that's not allowed in the EU but whatever. It's an odd one, the fabrics were of a nice quality but the quality of finish while not bad wasn't what I was expecting at this price point, it was on the level of Cos pretty much, which is excellent at that price point but at this price point I'm expecting more.

Anyhow back to memememe, I was rather surprised to be taken by what is essentially a moomoo dress that's also very modest, which I'm supposed to loathe on both accounts on principle. But aside from the ludicrous price and having no idea where and when I'd wear it aside from the odd special occasion it made me feel all Madonna with the Long Neck by Parmigianino. It was elegant in a way that I don't get to be (no worries, other forms of elegant are available to me Halo) as I'm not that mannerist exaggeratedly long limbed (the orangutan arms don't count). I also liked but had to get used to the colour. It's a little duskier clay pink in RL, it photographs as a more wearable colour tbh, it's a difficult one to pull off and you don't see it often as a result. I do like the colour, it's a tricky one though, I suspect only good if you've got olive undertones and it subsequently made me look a bit Middle Eastern. I may experiment with trying to recreate the shape as I really liked the drape and how it moved and try making it a little less modest somehow.

But the TL; DR version of it, I don't think it's that special to justify the price but I can definitely see that the right pieces on the right person can feel very special which could get someone to justify the price to themselves. I'm not sure those rare instances of kismet are enough to sustain a business though.

The fabric I got at Dries is the one from the shirt in pic 2, it's a blurry floral. I'm thinking a dress but I'm worried it'll overwhelm me, hence the cutting anxiety. If I want to play it safe I can go down the shirt dress road but I feel the fabric deserves something more exciting. Even contemplating if it could work for my moomoo dress experiment but that was very heavy silk and this is extremely breezy lightweight cotton so I think I have to go breezier but I don't want to go mad with volume. Welcome to my cutting anxiety 😬

Also got an end of roll khaki/beige piece of cotton for trousers, I think it's cavalry twill, it's a really nice heavy weight. There were a lot of fabrics, way more than I anticipated, it was completely overwhelming with all the prints happily clashing side by side. Also a bit pricier than I expected but I'm happy with my limited loot, I'm not a very fast sewer anyhow.

Only other pic I have is of a LouLou studios jumper, Loewe dress that would have been a steal if it had actually looked good on and a cashmere jumper from a brand I forgot but it looked crap on, so who cares about the brand. I did like the LouLou studio jumper, but they were asking cashmere prices for a 90% wool 10% cashmere mix, did strangely feel like 100% cashmere 🤷 Did see it's on sale on their own site for half off but I forgot which size I tried on and they also don't accept returns and exchanges on discounted products, which again, EU not allowed blah blah, I'm going to check if that hasn't secretly changed recently or something.

Lots of new A/W collection to see as well, lots of grey (but not a cold insipid shade, thankfully) and I'm glad I overindulged with trousers these past few years as everything is coming in very straight and narrow. It even looked like some of the shops had switched out their usual mannequins for junior ones (vaguely feminine but without any defined curves), it was quite a bizarre sight tbh, feels like a bit of a fuck you to the lockdown kgs everyone has put on, this probably explains my moomoo dress delight...

Oh I'm very [envy of your trip, both for the travel and for being somewhere with decent shops. My first thought on seeing the Moomoo dress was Margot Leadbetter in The Good Life, which probably doesn't say much for my cultural references but there you go. But I can def imagine it feeling nice. That fabric looks fab. In my previous sewing life I was fearless (aka didn't give a shit) about matching up prints but I'm much more timid this time around - even stripes make me nervous. But it's definitely worth the risk.

Your silhouette prediction should prove interesting if it comes about. I'd have expected that kind of swing to happen eventually but not quite so soon, not if they want anyone to actually buy their stuff.

quirkychick · 04/07/2021 12:59

Grin Margot Leadbetter! I completely get that cultural reference - child of the 70s.

botemp · 04/07/2021 13:20

I had to look her up, is it good or bad? 😨 I know cold shoulders are despised on here but she does make it look good.

I figure the print is large enough that there's no need to pattern match but I guess it also means I shouldn't be piecing together too many parts either and I worry if it'll go a bit frumpy/basic if it's too simple. It's making me appreciate Dries van Noten's design skills anyhow, as elements of his design language could go very petite bourgeois but he somehow manages to stay clear of that.

Wrt to the silhouette, Antwerp is quite petite bourgeois so I can see why they're embracing it so quickly. It makes sense as an ultimate display of restraint in among the excess and it was about time the pendulum swung the other direction again but I'm also puzzled by the business end of it. I was reading an article about depop a few months back which was interesting because it presents itself as very diverse and inclusive but the reality of it is that skinny white women are the top sellers and the way the app works is causing quite a lot of distress about body image in other women the way you usually see with social media platforms. Perhaps it's not daring after all to reinstate the long and lean shape if the data shows that's the easiest model to sell with, it's a tried an tested one, for sure.

Floisme · 04/07/2021 13:40

Well I am shocked to see Margot in a cold shoulder top. I'm sure she would have considered them rather vulgar.

I guess the long and lean thing is the ultimate in 'I've got a chef and a personal trainer'. It does make you nostalgic for the days when all you needed to signify your wealth was a huge plug-ugly handbag.

botemp · 04/07/2021 13:53

Haha, yes, you didn't even need a very expensive bag here, the wealth signifier bag of choice for those (self) proclaiming to be representatives of good taste is/was one of those reusable Harrod's grocery totes, quite shiny things with a traditional design. Don't think the design is for sale anymore so they're even more of a show off piece now.

My grandmother has some petite bourgeois tendencies, she still can't shut up about the Harrod's biscuit tin my father once got her. Nary a word mentioned about the actual biscuits she just enjoys trotting out that tin to guests and then going on about my father getting them for her on a business trip and his big important job... one of my earliest memories of her was her complaining about some random woman on the street carrying a paper Chanel bag and muttering how she was a horrible show off and probably just reusing everytime she went out. I can only take her in small doses Blush

OP posts:
Floisme · 04/07/2021 14:00

I bet the biscuits were good though. I've had a soft spot for Harrods ever since MrFlo took our son in when he was about 5 and asked them to show him their biggest diamond. They were really sweet and treated him like he was their most important customer of the day.
