How much would you spend on a handbag?

I'm about to spend £250 on a bag and it's more than I've spent on one single item ever before. I keep putting it off but I can't stop thinking about this damn bag.

It's very nice. I haven't spent that much on a bag but I've been thinking about it.

waitingforsun · 05/03/2021 16:29

@VerityWibbleWobble ahh you're welcome! Glad it's been helpful!

£500 on a mini Mulberry Bayswater in powder blue in the sale. I'd have prob held off and paid extra for a tan one as I'd use it more but I love it and it is still immaculate a few years later

SpeckledyHen · 05/03/2021 18:00

Fabulous OP .Thank you .Enjoy your new bag .

waitingforsun · 05/03/2021 18:04

@Viviennemary now it's here I'm really pleased with it. Definitely worth spending that, I'm sure it will last me a long time

@waitingforsun your bag looks lovely. I'm tempted by it too. Good quality classic bag is worth every penny!

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 05/03/2021 21:02

Looks lovely. Glad you like it

MuddleMoo · 05/03/2021 21:09

I'm getting adverts for the bag too! It's got lots of pockets looks great.

woollysheeps · 05/03/2021 21:42

Nothing like a nice quality leather item
We only live once and surrounding yourself in nice is worth it!
Will you get the monogram?

babbi · 05/03/2021 21:44

I have absolutely loved reading all your posts about your purchases.
Congratulations OP on your new bag ... however .....
I’d love to ask for some help please ...
I’m very boring and sensible and always pay off the mortgage and save etc ..use money “ wisely “ 🙄

Can someone please educate me ?
Why buy the expensive bags and what makes them good ?

My mother and all my friends are bag obsessed.. photos for social media etc displaying their new purchases 😀
I just don’t get it ??
But it’s time for a change .. I’d love to “get it “
This last year has been crazy and I’ve worked every single day since the start of this pandemic.. now received a good bonus and feel I should treat myself!!

What should I get that will last forever ... cos I’m tight , it’ll be a one off 😂
I’ve looked on websites but don’t know how to choose .

TIA

@Justfivemoreminutesplease I received the Maestra today and was very pleased. It fits in a laptop, kindle and my ginormous makeup bag (Scamp and dude) plus all the usuals like wallet, wristlet, hand gel, shopping bag etc. It has lots of compartments and a laptop pocket! You can wear it 3 ways- crossbody, shoulder and backpack. Unlike my Fossil Camilla which is also a convertible backpack, you don't need to unattach the straps to convert it, you can do it on the go, which is why i decided to go for this. As it means you can wear it as a backpack when on long walks, as a crossbody on the tube for easy access to tube card (there is a card slot on the back of the bag) etc. The leather feels durable- my DH knows nothing about bags but commented it is 'good hard leather' lol.

They paid my custom duties and offered free shipping. I paid using Revolut. I used a discount code PURSEONFLEEK75 for $75 off but there are probably some more discount codes floating around.

@onlychildandhamster that is so nice. Love the colour you went for. Bring on the end of lockdown so we can use our bags!

@babbi when I was a uni student and bought H & M , they always broke under the weight of my stuff, I carry everything but the kitchen sink! Maybe it worked out cheaper to buy £30 bags and replace them when they broke, but i hated it (somehow I don't mind it for shoes but i guess however expensive the shoes are, they still go on the floor). I also tend to carry the same bag everyday so I need a good bag.i feel like if you get 1 really good bag, it will last and as you carry it everyday, its more worth it than clothes and will always fit if it is classic.

Bags from designer brands can be silly money, yes, but there are some lovely bags out there, some more expensive than others. I think its better to get the bag that really fits you and your lifestyle rather than try to compromise because for some women, this can mean that they aren't satisfied and end up looking forever and buying lots of bags to compensate. I am on a bag group on facebook and i know for some women, they take resale value into account when they buy their bags so they know they can recoup some of the cost.- you can do that with Chanel and hermes and they retain their value really well. Personally I buy what I like plus Chanel and Hermes are way out of my budget (and they don't suit my lifestyle anyway, I feel like a lot of expensive handbags are made for women who drive everywhere or have staff to carry their things). I need a bag that can go on the Tube with me !

waitingforsun · 05/03/2021 22:21

@babbi what would you use a bag for? That's a good place to start. What do you usually need to carry? Also, what's your style? What clothes do you like?

My choice was based on:

Practical - needs room for my stuff and stuff for DS (3yo) also planning a second baby so wanted something big enough to use for then too. What I liked about the one I bought was all the organisation inside and extra pockets on the outside. Also the different ways I can wear it, shoulder, crossbody, back pack.

Looks - I had a plain black canvas change bag when DS was a baby. It was so awkward to use and just plain boring. So I wanted something that I can use as a change bag but that just looks like a handbag and then when I don't need to carry baby stuff anymore I can still use it.

Colour had to be tan - my favourite colour for bags. Goes with everything and all seasons. I'm not someone who likes to change bags often so it's got to go with everything I own.

Let's hear a bit more about you and we can help Grin

@woollysheeps I'm so glad I went for it. I didn't get the monogram. The extra tassel thing is a bit 'extra' for me. I added the matching wider strap at the last minute and I've got my eye on the canvas straps too.

@Pigtailsandall I'm really pleased with it. Would recommend Wink Especially with the 20% off! From snooping their Instagram it looks like they do a 20% off for Black Friday as well. I know that's a while off but maybe useful knowledge!

@Viviennemary Just got to find the perfect one!

onlychildandhamster · 05/03/2021 22:30

@waitingforsun Thank you! your bag looks lovely too. I couldn't wait to start using the bag so took it to go shopping at Lidl today!

I bought this bag for work because my employer is not such a fan of wfh so I would still be commuting to work on the Tube on a fairly regular basis BUT they may allow me to wfh sometimes so I need a sturdy bag to carry my laptop.

babbi · 05/03/2021 22:33

@waitingforsun

Thanks for your responses.
I think you’re absolutely correct - buy a good bag and it will pay for itself .

My style is classic ( boring tbh ) . I’m very small - only 5ft 1.

I work full time - will be from home forever now - except when going out to visit clients and this can involve travelling and overnight stays .
So I guess something sturdy ? That I can chuck all sorts in.
Sort of tote size ?
Is this oxblood people speak of stylish and classic or is it old fashioned ?
I’m usually a very safe “you can’t go wrong with navy “ person “🙄

babbi · 05/03/2021 22:35

Ps .. I have a Betty Barclay laptop bag 💼
That’s my previous “ best “ purchase 😂

LoveFromDeauville · 05/03/2021 22:35

Do it! I’m not hugely into shoes but do love my bags. Not super high end - Coach, Kate Spade, Tory Burch, DVF, Tods - but all very lovely. Am partial to a Judith Leiber clutch but fewer opportunities to use them these days.Hmm

waitingforsun · 05/03/2021 22:49

@babbi I think oxblood is a good colour and can be good for all seasons tbh.

Would you need a laptop sleeve for work? Do you prefer lots of pockets/compartments or just a kind of big open bag?

OP posts:
OrangeBlossom28 · 05/03/2021 22:53

The bag is lovely! I recently bought a beautiful Coach bag in oxblood for £280 as it was £350 with 20% off in JL.
