How much would you spend on a handbag?

I'm about to spend £250 on a bag and it's more than I've spent on one single item ever before. I keep putting it off but I can't stop thinking about this damn bag.

I spent £220 on a yvess Saint Laurent, rrp was £1500, then £130 on a beautiful mulberry. Most I’ve ever spent on bags and I love them. I’m hoping that the YSL one will get used by my DD when she grows up

Chicchicchicchiclana · 05/03/2021 07:25

The most expensive hand bag I own (I've only got 3) was £150 ish. I think that's my limit. I can't imagine ever falling in love with a bag.

balloonsintrees · 05/03/2021 07:26

Think about it in terms of cost per use.
My grandmother passed away 19 years ago and dad gave each of us £1000 from her will, I bought myself a Salvatore Ferragamo handbag with it. I think that now cost per use is about £10...
I have other expensive bags (400-500) that get used regularly but still look amazing after having them for 10 years or so. I do look after them and change bags every week so for me it has always been worth spending the money.

TimeQuest01 · 05/03/2021 07:29

If it was a bright colour, a busy print... something that you could get tired of, I would advise you to hold back.

But it’s a classic looking bag that could last you forever. You sound like a sensible person that will certainly look after it.

Go for it!

Milomonster · 05/03/2021 08:01

5k was the most I spent and never again. Everyday bags 100-350.

You never have to justify a handbag to me GrinGrinGrinGrin

I am a full blown handbagoholic! I have loved them since I was tiny. My round yellow patent leather (plastic Wink) handbag with an owl on the front, with google eyes from Woolworths, circa 1973, is the first purchase I remember making.
Needless to say there have been plenty more since then. Halo

Handbags, if you buy well can last you a life time and certain ones most certainly can increase in value.

I purchased my first Chanel 11 years ago for a big birthday. It was £1650. It is now being sold at three times that price. I wouldn't buy it now I don't think, but I can't rule it out GrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

Life is too short. Buy the bag. HaloHaloHaloHalo

Beebumble2 · 05/03/2021 11:19

I’d buy it, I live a good leather bag, but wouldn’t buy a mega expensive one as I’d worry and not use it.
Your bag is within the range I’d buy, it looks great and as if it would wear well and look better with age.

brokenkettle · 05/03/2021 11:42

I think the most I've spent is maybe £30? With something more pricey, I'd be reluctant to even wear it outdoors in case it got dirty or stolen Confused

ElderMillennial · 05/03/2021 13:51

I think my most expensive bag is the mulberry Bayswater which was about £500-600 at the time but now they are closer to £1000 It was a special treat to myself for a career achievement and not something I'd spend all the time. I have a couple of other bags that I've spent £200-400 on but not loads.

I can't open the link but if you can afford it then buy it because a classic good quality bag will last you years. If you love it you will probably continue to love it and that's better than buying several bags at a 1/3 of the price. Good quality leather bags cost a bit anyway.

I arecommend tk Maxx for bags as you can get designer bags (real designer like marc jacobs) for a good price.

ElderMillennial · 05/03/2021 13:52

If really like a Chanel bag but they are mega £ and I think I wouldn't use it for worry about ruining it.

ShapeShiftedForThis · 05/03/2021 14:02

I have had loads of cheap handbags in the past. Now I have a collection of 4 really decent ones ranging from £300 - £1,200. I know that is madness but one of them that I use every day is timeless and cost £700 and I have had it for 15 years. I get them on very, very special occasions and don't get anything else for a few years.

I have my handbags on my insurance.
VerityWibbleWobble · 05/03/2021 15:16

@waitingforsun has it arrived yet?

I've still got my basket loaded and waiting for your lowdown on whether it lives up to expectations Grin

waitingforsun · 05/03/2021 15:39

@VerityWibbleWobble yes! Arrived about 2:30. It's absolutely lovely. Seems great quality. The colour is perfect, the leather is great. It's got a bit of a slouch that I think will only get better with time. The strap is a good length too, so you can put it on your shoulder without using the other hand to pull it up if that makes sense. You can kind of just bend your elbow through. It's very roomy! You could really fit a lot if you packed it to the brim and a good amount if you half packed it which would still give the slouch effect. I'll post some photos...

Also comes inside dust bag and with an extra zipped pouch to put something in, inside the bag. I'd probably put something like a change of clothes for DS.

Nice bag! It has the look of a bag that will also just get better with age and use.
onlychildandhamster would you mind please posting a picture of your new bag? I’d never heard of Senreve before, but since having a look at the website last night, I’m seriously tempted....

lothermand · 05/03/2021 15:53

About a tennerGrin

strawberry2017 · 05/03/2021 15:55

I would spend £250 if I had it but not on that bag- purely because I don't like it.
It doesn't look worth the money to me

VerityWibbleWobble · 05/03/2021 15:58

That's it sun it's been ordered after seeing you modelling it.

Thank you so much for finding me the bag I've been looking for for ages now, all those lubbly jubbly compartments.

I'm excited now Grin

SpeckledyHen · 05/03/2021 16:08

Looks great OP . Will probably soften and slouch over time .
Is it a keeper ?

I would be interested in seeing how it converts to a backpack 🎒.

waitingforsun · 05/03/2021 16:22

@SpeckledyHen It's a keeper Grin

It had some little hidden D rings at the bottom which you pull out to attach the long strap that threads through the D rings at the top.

Perfectly functional but central D ring at the top would be slightly more aesthetically pleasing. You could definitely use the long strap to wear it cross body too. I'd probably take off the short shoulder strap if I was wearing it this way.
