How much would you spend on a handbag?

I'm about to spend £250 on a bag and it's more than I've spent on one single item ever before. I keep putting it off but I can't stop thinking about this damn bag.

Tempted?

I’ve bought one Blush

alloutofcareunits · 04/03/2021 08:20

I did a piece of work in 2012 which I was well paid for on top of my usual day job. I treated myself to a Mulberry bag and paid £700 at the time. I still use it, was my weekend use bag but now my every day work bag. I'd have got through many cheaper bags in that time therefore I reckon it saved me money GrinI have since bought 2 more as I think price per use it's good value!

waitingforsun · 04/03/2021 08:22

@LunaNorth fab! Did you go for the tan too?

@picklemewalnuts that is true, I like that it's got the backpack/crossbody option for that reason. I'm going to try really hard to keep it organised haha

@Mirrorxx amazing! Can we see? 😁

If you will use it a lot then go for it.

I've got an Hermes Kelly 28 Sellier and I spent months trying to decide whether to go for it because of the investment. I had to jump through many hoops to get it so when the moment came that I was offered it, my sunken cost fallacy made me buy it.

But I love it, it's timeless and it's certainly an investment piece because it will hold its value.

Mirrorxx · 04/03/2021 08:35

@waitingforsun hopefully it should arrive in the next 2 weeks

MindBodyChocolate · 04/03/2021 08:42

I love this bag! I’ve been looking for a black handbag suitable for work but also generally. I think this fits the bill. Thank you 😊

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 04/03/2021 08:43

Much better to buy the bag you really love than waste money on several cheaper ones that aren't quite right.
The most I've spent is £740 on a mulberry. DH physically handed over the money, therefore it is a present and since it was a gift it would rude to return it and save the money instead - guilt free purchase Wink

waitingforsun · 04/03/2021 08:50

@Mirrorxx Exciting! 😁

@MindBodyChocolate ahh! Great! 😁 They're lovely aren't they?! I was umming and ahhing between the 'Lennox' and 'midi Lennox' but decided on the bigger one in the end.

I've only recently come across this brand. Like that is a UK small business too.

@waitingforsun Quidco and discount codes are all I ever buy stuff with Grin I've got two lovely coach bags and never paid full price

waitingforsun · 04/03/2021 08:54

@MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously Absolutely! I'm really trying to buy less, and what I do buy, make it good quality and versatile.

I was going to wait for my birthday in May as I usually get given some money, but there's 20% off at the moment, so I couldn't resist that saving!

waitingforsun · 04/03/2021 08:55

@QueenPaw someone else mentioned Quidco and Coach. Might have to investigate that!

My Senreve Maestra bag which i bought for £580 is arriving today. This is the biggest purchase I have ever made other than my flat. Was a bit of a mad purchase but hope it would last me for years and be useful to me when we return to the office and I have to cart my laptop to and fro due to flexible working.

waitingforsun · 04/03/2021 09:27

@onlychildandhamster I've never heard of that brand. Just googled it - beautiful bag. So many colours to choose from!

VerityWibbleWobble · 04/03/2021 09:30

But it's coming up as £295 on my screen?

waitingforsun · 04/03/2021 09:36

@waitingforsun Its a relatively new brand set up in 2016 by 2 Asian american women who used to work in finance/tech and couldn't find any utilitarian luxury bags that fit their needs. So they set up their own company and the bags are made in spain/Italy. They ship worldwide and pay duties/taxes. Unlike most luxury brands, they rely on online sales rather than brick and mortar shops.

I am excited to see how it looks IRL.

Sandgrown1970 · 04/03/2021 09:39

I’m another that stops at £250. I could afford the ridiculously priced ones but I’d feel almost dirty if I bought one, just really corrupt or something. It’s hard to explain but I couldn’t be ok with the associated guilt I’d feel. It’s very difficult as in the circles I mix in it’s very much the done thing that women have Mulberry, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, YSL etc bags and purses and really boast about it and show them off and they always pick up on the fact that I don’t have one and “feel sorry for me” and say I “need a better husband” Hmm. I don’t want to be an utter prick to my friends and say “I think it’s disgusting to spend thousands of pounds on a bag when there are people who don’t have access to clean water or healthcare and when we’ve got kids in our own town needing to use the food bank”. I just say “I’m not all that into handbags, it would be a bit of a waste for me!” but it’s obviously a lie.

And yeah, £250 is still a lot of money but that would only be once every other year or every three years to last me 10+ years and allows me to feel ok in myself without the guilt, donate money and have a nice bag.
So I’d say go for it in this case!
