How much would you spend on a handbag?

I'm about to spend £250 on a bag and it's more than I've spent on one single item ever before. I keep putting it off but I can't stop thinking about this damn bag.

Last one I bought was £650.

A trip to Macy's sounds like so much fun! 🤩

@DramaAlpaca

I really love a Mulberry that's about £1,000. I could probably afford it if I desperately wanted it, but I just can't bring myself to spend that amount of money on a handbag, I'd feel guilty about it. I always buy cheaper ones then get rid of them when I get bored or they get tatty. I wouldn't want to be getting bored with an expensive bag! I spend up to £100 on bags, usually much less.

OP if you think you'll use it lots and you can afford it then get it. It'll make you happy Smile

Wait for the sale or check the outlet stock. I just bought a mulberry from Cheshire oaks outlet.

@Knittingnanny

I’ve just discovered the Leather Company uk, another British company and really like the medium bucket bag.
There are some lovely leather jackets on there! 😳

My mulberry was £900 and I use it every day and have done since 2016 when I bought it at the airport on my honeymoon.

@OhioOhioOhio

I'm the party pooper. I'd rather put it to overpaying the mortgage and retire earlier. Sorry. Totally don't get the extravagance.
It's £250. I imagine if the OP made a one off payment of £250 towards her mortgage, it wouldn't really enable her to retire early.
GintyMcGinty · 04/03/2021 19:28

I haven't used a handbag in a year though so wouldn't spend a penny on a new one.

Total waste of money.

FreekStar · 04/03/2021 19:29

I probably would spend up to £250, however I get DH to buy ones that cost more- the most expensive he bought was a mulberry backpack at the outlet for £650. It's really nice!

FreekStar · 04/03/2021 19:30

I just bought an Aspinal London tote- reduced from £650 to £221!!!

gottakeeponmovin · 04/03/2021 19:31

If I loved it I would pay whatever it costs. You use a bag everyday it's worth the investment

waitingforsun · 04/03/2021 19:36

@GintyMcGinty I am planning on leaving the house at some point.

That is a lovely bag OP

The most I've ever paid for a bag was an Osprey bag last March when I got offered a new job. I treated myself to a bag that was in the sale (£300 reduced to £130) but justified it to myself as needing look smart for all the meetings I was going to be going to. Lockdown happened before I started my new post.....

Wagsandclaws · 04/03/2021 19:46

I'm a bag lady, that's my thing. I just love bags. I started with Mulberry then went on to Chanel, LV Ect.

I have three Hermes now, not the super expensive ones but 2 Garden Party bags and an Evelyne. My Evelyne is about 18 years old and the leather looks like new.

I also love Chanel, I've just bought a 19 in the large and that's the most I've ever spent on a bag. I love it so much and can't wait to wear it out and about to more than the supermarket.

OP that's a gorgeous bag, enjoy it, they are one of my favourite things to collect and I get lots of use out of mine.

3CCC · 04/03/2021 19:49

That bag is bloody lush op I'd spend £250 on it.
Think my most expensive bag I've had was £180 which was a Christmas present.

Knittingnanny · 04/03/2021 19:49

I hadn’t even realised they sold coats to be honest, I went to the site via a handbag pop up on my Facebook ( I wonder why!)

Alarae · 04/03/2021 19:52

Contemplated a Mulberry backpack (old style) but didn't pull the trigger in the end. Most spent in the end was probably £120ish on a Kate Spade.

I have spent £550 on a pair of Sophia Webster shoes (got £150 back, so net £400) though... and another £360 on some second hand Loubs..

Hoorayforsunshine · 04/03/2021 19:53

I would say if you buy an expensive bag make sure you actually use it rather than keeping it for best. I have a Bayswater which I kept for best and even though it’s a classic style, it did date and I just wouldn’t use it as much now (and it’s so heavy). Wish I had just used it more when I loved it.

For £250 I would hope it lasts well. I spent quite a lot on a jaeger bag that fell apart v quickly. Don’t hesitate to send something back even after months if it isn’t holding up- your statutory rights.

Knittingnanny · 04/03/2021 20:00

Waiting for sun, it’s always a special trip. My son and wife don’t have too much holiday from work so each of my visits does have one or two solo days in it. I go into Manhattan in the morning with son who works there and go into Macy’s, a short walk from his office. I head to the bag department, have a really good browse, go for a cup of tea in the cafe, go back to shortlist, then realise it is time for me to go and meet him for lunch. “ What did you do this morning mum?”
“ well, just to Macy’s first floor really”
Then I go make and make my final decision and purchases.
If I have any time left I get the subway to Purl Solo. Another favourite shop to buy wool, and fabric and maybe some more wool.
That is the whole day gone.
If I have a second free day I take myself to the most amazing 3 storey fabric and haberdashery store and lose another day.
Sorry to derail the handbag thread! Although vaguely connected, as I have to plan very carefully which will be my “ visiting Manhattan for the day in Spring/summer/winter or Autumn “ bag.
We need to see a picture when it arrives, on your shoulder so we ( I) can gauge whether I would hypothetically buy that one or the smaller one.
Just to clarify, I’m quite old and can do what I like! My husband thinks I have just a few bags. He has no idea.

CravingTheSun · 04/03/2021 20:16

Absolutely for a good quality handbag that you will love and use for years. Much better for your purse in the long run and better for the environment I would say! Smile
