Have we seen the back of wearing heels?

This article hasn't told me anything I don't already know really, but I was never much of a heel wearer. To me heels are anything over 2" high, and I can't wait to kick them off as soon as I can.

It's a good question about what kind of shoes to wear for a really formal event. I'd end up having to overhtink that one I'm sure because I think ballet flats look very frumpy.

TheNorthWind · 14/02/2021 13:07

I think they mostly feel incredibly dated. Like 2003 dated. I can't imagine when or where I'd want to wear them.

A pair of plain courts in the office is one thing (hardly high fashion and I still don't want to) but the thought of tottering around on a pair of stiletto heeled boots or painfully high "going out" shoes is an anathema. I would look ridiculous.

I think it's going to be kitten or low heels at most for a while. And permanently for me Grin

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 14/02/2021 13:09

No i love a heel for a special occasion or going out, makes an outfit special.

Ccwanker · 14/02/2021 13:12

I can safely say kitten heels are the most awful footwear ever invented.

BridgertonBunkUp · 14/02/2021 13:12

@floorplanner

Agreed! I hate the look of ballet flats and find them as uncomfortable as heels. Generally hate slip on or very flat/thin soles shoes, as I have high arches. It’s a conundrum!

MiddlesexGirl · 14/02/2021 13:15

When everyone is out and about again they'll be back.
Because they make women look sexier. Not more professional ... just sexier.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 14/02/2021 13:16

Ccwanker Agreed. Kitten heels are horrific.

Purplecatshopaholic · 14/02/2021 13:18

I love my heels and am not giving them up! I have taken to wearing them round the house, and also when i wfh.

TheChampagneGalop · 14/02/2021 13:28

I look forward to seeing what sort of alternatives shoe designers will come up with for fancy occasions. I'm not a fan of ballet flats either, no support.

Floisme · 14/02/2021 13:30

Yes I think fashion designers are perfectly capable of creating flats for special occasion wear. They just need an incentive to do so.

lazylinguist · 14/02/2021 13:31

I live rurally and walk a lot. I only ever wore heels (2" in my case) on rare nights out, and occasionally to work.

Me too, except I haven't worn them to work for about 20 years either. Tbh I've gone off even the look of them, because they are too tainted by the whole concept of women wearing painful, uncomfortable things in order to conform to a beauty ideal.

MiddlesexGirl · 14/02/2021 13:31

They may be capable. But a high heel will always be sexier. Can't change anatomy.

LunaNorth · 14/02/2021 13:35

I last wore them to my niece’s wedding two years ago.

Unfortunately I’m a good few inches taller than my family, and in heels I absolutely loomed over them.

The pictures are terrible. I look like I’m in one of those massive It’s A Knockout costumes Blush

Ginfordinner · 14/02/2021 13:37

@Ccwanker

Nooooooooo. I love love love my heels. I’ve been in heels since I was 16. Still wear stilettos to work, I can run in them if I need to!

I did get told off by a consultant orthopaedic surgeon though who told me what damage I was doing to my back wearing them and now every time he sees me he wags his finger at me Hmm

I feel frumpy and sloppy footed in flats

What do you wear if just going for a walk?

TBH I don't understand the Hmm when you get told off for wearing heels all the time. If your constant heel wearing causes back issues why wouldn't you alternate them with wearing flatter shoes? Confused

Bmidreams · 14/02/2021 13:43

I'm quite tall and struggle in heels but they are very sexy, but I also think my brogues are incredibly sexy.

camelfinger · 14/02/2021 13:43

I hate heels but I also think that after covid restrictions come to an end there will be a resurgence of going out out and outfits in accordance with that. I’d happily wear flats forever more but I guess if I was the only frumpy one then I’d end up fitting with others by wearing heels of some nature.

CorianderBee · 14/02/2021 13:48

I just don't see why heel makers haven't created more comfortable stylish bees? Even the expensive ones are painful.

Why doesn't a brand invest? I'd pay a couple of hundred for a good pair of very comfy but sexy heels.

Lifeispassingby · 14/02/2021 13:55

The only place I wear heels since covid is the bedroom Wink I don’t wear them everyday as my job is impractical with them but I have a great selection for special occasions

Ccwanker · 14/02/2021 13:58

Out for a walk? Wellies. Walking boots. Doc Martin’s. Gym, trainers. Out for the day shopping, flats - naice trainers.

Work - heels. Any kind of eating out - heels. Out for the night/special occasion - heels

Ccwanker · 14/02/2021 13:59

Why did I eye roll at the consultant? Because I’ve been wearing heels for 30 years and my back doesn’t hurt. I’ve never had back problems.

Oblomov21 · 14/02/2021 14:01

These types of announcements are regular and silly. I don't wear heels often. But when I want to, I will, and no one is gonna tell me I can't.

TheNorthWind · 14/02/2021 14:08

I agree. Kitten heels are horrible. Can I revise my statement to low heels?

You can still hate them, but I would feel better.

lazylinguist · 14/02/2021 14:08

Nobody's telling anyone they can't! The announcement was that most women are choosing not to buy them, not that they are being banned.

I did get told off by a consultant orthopaedic surgeon though who told me what damage I was doing to my back wearing them and now every time he sees me he wags his finger at me hmm

Yes, damn that surgeon for telling the truth Confused. Why anyone would prefer back damage to flatter shoes, I honestly can't imagine.

Ccwanker · 14/02/2021 14:09

I will allow low heels and scratch kitten heels from the record

Floisme · 14/02/2021 14:15

I'm not seeking to eradicate heels and I'm sure they'll come back into fashion. What I do hope is that fashion designers have taken notice of the current interest in flats and will use their skills to give us a few more alternatives to brogues, trainers, loafers and ballet flats.

Oh and whenever I'm talking about heels, I make an exception for platforms, which I adore.
