Have we seen the back of wearing heels?

This article hasn't told me anything I don't already know really, but I was never much of a heel wearer. To me heels are anything over 2" high, and I can't wait to kick them off as soon as I can.

I still like heels!

For me it completely depends upon the outfit. Most of the time I like trainers or flat boots for casual but for smartish work outfits I struggle to find flat shoes that I like and are comfy far more than finding heels that look good and are comfy. Flats often make my feet ache.

Laiste · 16/02/2021 21:07

I used to live in heels. Less than 5'' was a low heel to me. Running to catch the bus or the tube. Working all day standing up/walking around in them.

Last 10 years though i've only really worn heels in the winter or at weddings. I like winter boots with a block heel. I have a pair of Clarks brown suede ankle boots with apx 3'' heel which are about 4 years old and feel like slippers on. Squdigy sole. School run, tesco everywhere.

I have to put my hands up to fit flops for the summer. Tia sandal. Like walking on clouds.

BallsToYouSue · 16/02/2021 21:16

@Laiste, I feel we have a bond now, over the Fitflops 😂. But yes, like walking on clouds! I wouldn't walk anywhere in summer if it wasn't for those (I am told, terribly unfashionable) shoes!

I buy a pair of Tia's each summer. I now have black, brown and last summer i bought the rose gold. When my first pair arrived (black ordered online) i got called outside by DH in the middle of trying them on and had to go outside and climb over mountains of earth and rubble and gravel (house build) and wander about talking to building reg blokes for an hour and i totally forgot i was wearing new sandals out of the box!

Black ones are now 3 summers old and have been everywhere. Punished with being covered with cement/sea water/sand/rocks/school run/woods/ everything. Quick wipe over, till going strong. Still comfiest thing ever.

LunaNorth · 17/02/2021 02:25

Ooh I like those...

Ponoka7 · 17/02/2021 02:31

@citygirl1961, as well as trainers, I wear sketchers city range or go walk with summer dresses. But I like to walk fair distances.

Jerry Hall wore flats on her wedding day and was criticised for doing so on here. I don't think she would have looked any better in heels.

I'd pay out for a nice pair of toe/full foot covering flats, to go with going out dresses. Autumn/winter is easy. It's dressing up summer flats, that are difficult to find.

OMG, how beautiful Jerry Hall looks in that so-elegant outfit!

The shoes are lovely.

BallsToYouSue · 17/02/2021 09:32

Those are lovely @Laiste and very un-Fitfloppy really. I am pleased to hear they're comfy as I wasn't sure.

I have very dodgy feet. They are gross. Boney, long toes, not enough flesh on the bottom, so I need a good thick sole, so...brace yourselves. I'm ashamed to say, these are mine Blush. They are not pretty, but they are brilliant for summer! Massive soles. I can walk in them anywhere.

I also have two pairs of their trainers 🙈. But they're fairly inoffensive.

This is one of the reasons I'm glad high heels aren't standard anymore. Shaming women for not wearing shoes that are uncomfortable and hard to walk in just isn't right. Big events like weddings can be stressful enough, without worrying about stumbling or painful feet.

Laiste · 17/02/2021 10:40

Oh they're nice Balls!

I had a pair a bit like that years ago from Rocket Dog (when i was a bit more trendy). They had beads on and I bought them purely for the look but the depth of the sole made them so comfy! I think that was when i began thinking properly about comfort as well as being pretty. The Tia ones are really squishy underfoot (in the right places) even though the sole doesn't look that much thicker than a flip flop once they're on.

The only problem with them is that they are SO comfy that I tend to wear them constantly from the first warmish day (mid March?) till the last (end Sept?) and by then my feet are so soft and used to total comfort that EVERYTHING else feels like bricks on my feet. Even quite pricey boots or courts.

This (desperately attempts now to link back to point of thread) has contributed to my stopping of wearing heels over the last 3 years of so actually. My feet are tender things now Grin

Laiste · 17/02/2021 10:41

Love that look on JH. She's very tall isn't she? I wonder if that influenced her?

lazylinguist · 17/02/2021 10:41

I like those @BallsToYouSue! I couldn't wear them though - I find toe posts incredibly uncomfortable and I have quite narrow feet. I tried FitFlops when I had plantar fasciitis because they are recommended, but I found the height and the unfittedness of them very unstable.

BallsToYouSue · 17/02/2021 10:45

Ah I may have wide feet than you at the toe end linguist. As well as being boney they are also wide at the bit. Don't I sound SEXY 😂?

Anywho, yes, the point of the thread, agree shaming women for not wearing heels is awful. Can't believe we put up with this shit! The boys meeting up with girls in the 90s, in their jeans and trainers, while we tattered along in massive heels and super tight dresses 🤢. Just wrong.

@Unfucked

We’ll look back on high heels the way our grandmothers’ generation looked back on corsets: bemusement and horror, despite recognising their ability to work miracles with human proportions.
yes but weirdley, coursets are sort of back (or rather a modern spandexy version of them). If they had elastic/Spandex in the 18th century they wouldnt have needed Whale bone.
Floisme · 17/02/2021 10:56

From what I remember of the Jerry Hall wedding outfit threads, I think it's a bit of a stretch to describe them as 'shaming' her. As I recall, some posters thought she'd have looked better in heels, and I dare say there was the odd dick comment. But plenty of us didn't agree. It was a discussion about an outfit, nothing more and nothing less, and I think half of us were more perplexed by her choice of husband than by her footwear.

BallsToYouSue · 17/02/2021 10:58

Oh I didn't see the thread. Assumed the "shaming" was to do with social media or DM comments or something!

VenusClapTrap · 17/02/2021 12:49

And now women are shamed for not shaving off every particle of their pubic hair. I think that’s worse actually. Sad

Ew, very true. Really wrong 🤢.
TheChampagneGalop · 17/02/2021 13:13

I think those who shame grown women for having pubic hair should be shamed Grin Weaklings!

I disagree but I’m in my 20s. People my age definitely still wear and purchase shoes with a heel, but perhaps not in the same styles that older generations used to buy. The only reason you don’t see many people my age in heels is due to lockdown. When clubs reopen, you’ll see.

Bertiebiscuit · 20/02/2021 19:39

Gave up heels years ago - wish I'd never worn them though as I probably wouldn't have a massive bunion on one foot that makes all my toes distorted - and to be honest I've noticed that they make women walk funny - don't know how we got brainwashed into this one

GawjussPreMadonna · 21/02/2021 11:32

I will definitely keep wearing heels because I love them. I have several pairs of boots with 2-3 inch heels which I used to wear to work almost every day (in winter at least) and have been wearing regularly over the last few months too. Slightly less common for me in summer but I do have quite a few pairs of comfortable high heels which I will wear when I return to work, and I couldn't imagine going for a night out or too a special occasion without wearing heels.

I do welcome everyone having the choice to wear flat shoes if they prefer though
