Have we seen the back of wearing heels?

This article hasn't told me anything I don't already know really, but I was never much of a heel wearer. To me heels are anything over 2" high, and I can't wait to kick them off as soon as I can.

If there were more dainty, dressy up shoes that had low heels or were flat then heels wouldn't be "essential" for some outfits.

I have a fair few dressy low or flat shoes as I like them with shorter lengths but they are generally expensive.

nocoolnamesleft · 15/02/2021 16:31

I only ever wear heels with one dress, because it's too fancy to shorten, and looks fab, but clearly designed for someone a couple of inches taller. So only for formal night on a cruise.

Firstimer703 · 15/02/2021 16:34

I'm still wearing heels at home but may have totally lost the ability to walk anywhere in them!!

brownet · 15/02/2021 16:44

I'd pay a couple of hundred for a good pair of very comfy but sexy heels.

Manolo Blahniks are comfortable & sexy.

KickAssAngel · 15/02/2021 16:51

I live in the US, in the midwest, and almost nobody wears heels, even for a big night out in town. If a group of 20-somethings comes into a restaurant wearing dresses & heels, people will raise eyebrows as it's so unusual.

Even the most fashionable and dressed up women are more likely to wear some kind of sparkly flip-flops style with dresses. It also means we can have nail varnish on our toes to add to the glamour.

I'm in my 30s & was a teenager in the 90s when everyone wore trainers so like DD who is 17 has never worn them in her life.
I don't think I'd worn them either by then. However fashions change.

Timpeall · 15/02/2021 17:11

I wear flats 90% of the time but there are occasions for me, when only heels will do. But trainers, chunky flat boots etc. have been the fashion for the past few years now, it's not just a lockdown era effect. But heels will definitely be back.

I will never be a sparkly flip flop kind of woman.

OakSnows · 15/02/2021 17:11

I hate the injustice that men get to wear comfy flats and women have to work all day in heels. Even in jobs standing all day. Hate it. We’re looked down in for not wearing heels or actively pulled up on it. Bollocks.

PaulHollywoodsLowHangingFruit · 15/02/2021 17:13

Isn't that sex discrimination?

Bouncealot · 15/02/2021 17:14

Weak ankles have meant I have never worn them much, as I fall off them.Formal work days and weddings only in last 5 years. Broke my ankle last year ( in flats!) and have bagged all heels up, most of which I haven’t worn in a decade and good riddance. 2 daughters have never worn them (mid 20s), both have professional jobs.I don’t need to be ‘sexy’ outside house and partner doesn’t look at ‘packaging’ in that way. Surely the bodycon/heels look was dated before Covid? Women shouldn’t have to look like a trussed up chicken teetering on cocktail sticks to look smart or attractive.

I thought that after a case a few years ago Parliament decided that legislation already covered women not being forced to wear heels and therefore they did not need to introduce a specific law?
Canitbemagic · 15/02/2021 17:18

Men and women should wear flat suits and shoes for work. Job done

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 15/02/2021 17:19

Heels really are not 'cool' fashion in London these days.

Timpeall · 15/02/2021 17:19

I know in Japan women can still be obliged to wear heels in corporate jobs, but that's not the case in the UK.

@addicted2spaniels

I wore heels on my 50th last year.

And on my 21st.

I don't like to overdo things Grin

No, not at all Grin

I'll start wearing high heels again when men start wearing impractical and uncomfortable footwear.

Whyistheteacold · 15/02/2021 17:49

Stiletto style heels are very dated. I haven't seen anyone under the age of 40 wearing them where I live in a long time!

StarlightLady · 15/02/2021 17:58

I love my dresses but heels are a no-no!

SymphonyofShadows · 15/02/2021 18:03

Years of wearing Docs and biker boots have made me incapable of wearing heels. I wish I could walk in them now, but I trot ridiculously. There must be a trick that I’ve forgotten, as I used to love a stiletto

citygirl1961 · 16/02/2021 19:39

This thread hits a nail on the head for me. I used to wear high stilettos in the eighties/early nineties but since then have worn low block heels, flip flops or ballet flats and I just have a couple of very low stilletos for going out at night in, which isn't very often these days and in normal times when I go out its usually straight from work.

I've never been a trainer person and never owned a pair of walking shoes until recently. I used to live very close to the bus stop, whereas now I have a walk to the bus, plus I live on a hill so some friends of mine said I'd be better off in walking shoes in the bad weather so I bought some. At first I thought they were frumpy and made me look unfeminine (I am a girly type of a woman) but they've been brilliant this past week or so in all the ice and snow we've been getting.

So now I am tending to wear just normal flat shoes now the ice has gone and I do find them more comfy to walk in going to and from work. When I do wear walking shoes for work, I change into other flat shoes in the office (we do have a dress code).

My question is what about summer flats? I usually wear flip flops a lot but my friend says they can ruin your feet if you wear them for walking a lot. I do have some nice sandals with a cube heel but I've fallen over in them before now.

Also I do feel trainers or walking shoes can look frumpy with dresses. Does anyone else feel like this? I don't want to wear high heels again, I couldn't cope in them but I do like to feel a bit dressed up.

BallsToYouSue · 16/02/2021 19:44

I don't see how flipflops are any less frumpy than trainers with a dress?

But, if you don't like trainers, you do like flipflops, but you want something good for your feet...right, now this is a dirty word on the S&B board, so gird your loins... 😂

Have you tried Fitflops? I have some. I have them because my feet get too hot on very hot summer days, but I need something more supportive for my feet. They are not fashionable, but they work for me on hot days.

EventuallyDeleted · 16/02/2021 19:48

Birkenstocks for me. I know they are clumpy but they are so, so comfy.

I have several pairs of Birks. Love them!
