Have we seen the back of wearing heels?

This article hasn't told me anything I don't already know really, but I was never much of a heel wearer. To me heels are anything over 2" high, and I can't wait to kick them off as soon as I can.

Even with going out post-Covid and dressing up, I don’t see why that would necessarily mean heels and uncomfortable things. I’ll look forward to seeing my friends again and I think clothes will play a much lesser part in going out.

Ginfordinner · 14/02/2021 11:14

If there were more dainty, dressy up shoes that had low heels or were flat then heels wouldn't be "essential" for some outfits.

Hmm, speaking strictly for me, I've been thinking about future going out clothes for months. Grin It's just that none of the outfits include heels, but then they wouldn't have done before Covid.

Pipandmum · 14/02/2021 11:19

People who like heels will wear them, those that don't, won't.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 14/02/2021 11:23

Well I'm 60 and live in a very rural area and wear sturdy walking boots and jeans most of the time but that doesn't stop me having a magnificent collection of high heeled shoes for special occasions.

Tanfastic · 14/02/2021 11:30

I like a pair of heels but tend to go for more block/chunky types these days. For work I either wear block heeled shoes or flat loafers.

I have several pairs of fabulous really high heels that I'll dig out for a really posh night out but they've been gathering dust for nearly two years now.

I couldn't go "out out" in flat shoes I'd feel fat and dumpy, heels always make me feel slimmer.

Lightningcrops · 14/02/2021 11:31

I used to love wearing heels, the past few years has definitely been more about comfort for me, and no regrets! Hopefully there will be more of a selection of 'nice' flats for special occasions if the demand for heels falls.

Fagey · 14/02/2021 11:32

I broke my big toe a few years back.

There's wasn't much they could do for it. Healed on its own.

But clearly not properly. As having it bent upwards (like in heels) hurts so much.

So I shan't be sporting a heel much if ever. And haven't for the last few years.

Shame as I'm over a foot shorter than DH. Although suits me to feel small next to him.

PralineFowler · 14/02/2021 11:34

I’m 5’11, so never been a fan of sky scraper stilettos, but I do like heels - whether it’s wedge sandals in summer, or low/mid heel ankle boots in winter. It’s a nice look and as long as the shoe is comfortable for its purpose (obviously not a hike!) I like having the option.

I’m glad the trend is turning away from torturous contraptions, but I also really dislike the return to 90s-style clumpy boots with dresses, and absolutely hate ‘trainers-with-everything’.

caperplips · 14/02/2021 12:01

I'm tall at 5 ft 9" and mainly wear flat ankle boots. I do have some high heeled boots / shoes & I like wearing them out for dinner/ drinks etc
I won't give up on them entirely as there are some outfits & occasions that they just suit better.
I never ever wear heels to work & that won't change

CorianderBee · 14/02/2021 12:10

I stopped wearing heels when I turned 22 and found my soles were screaming after an hour when before I could go all night in them.

I sometimes wear a chunky boot heel but that's it.

BaggoMcoys · 14/02/2021 12:19

I used to just about manage heels when I was blind drunk and couldn't feel the pain, now I can barely last 5 minutes. Any type of heel and I'm the same! I have arthritis in my feet alongside other issues that have got worse with age (I'm only 33 but I think my feet are in their 90s).

I never feel properly dressed up without them though!

BaggoMcoys · 14/02/2021 12:19

But I don't wear them^

VenusClapTrap · 14/02/2021 12:25

Oh I used to love heels. I wore them all day for work and danced all night in them at parties. I could run for buses in them without any problems. They flatter my vertically challenged frame, and my legs were always my best feature, so a mini skirt and stilettos was my ‘look’.

Then I had children and moved to the country. High heels don’t work on potholes and muddy footpaths through fields! I still wear them if we go into town for dinner (pre Covid anyway 🙄) and I love the way they make me feel dressed up and glamorous compared to my day to day wellies and waterproof uniform, but they’re not comfortable or easy to walk in any more.

So I think I’ll stay a dinosaur and always wear them for special occasions, even if the bright young things never do again.

CorianderBee · 14/02/2021 12:27

I've also never been able to walk in court shoes without straps as my arches are so extremely high that you can see through the gap above the shoe edge and I basically fall out.

So I've never been able to look very glam in heels anyway.

JM10 · 14/02/2021 12:29

I've worn mine working from home a few times and worn them for some home discos. I never wore heels loads, but I do like to wear them occasionally and will continue to

Meredithgrey1 · 14/02/2021 12:32

I hope not, I love heels and have been wearing my heeled boots all winter!

CornishPastyDownUnder · 14/02/2021 12:33

Never worn anything but trainers, crocs and flipflops/sandals in 30 years..The teen DC are the same -think heels are a joke&why would anyone bother wearing something so uncomfortable-its always been my question but heels were just a given in the late 80s/early90's when I was a teen'!

floorplanner · 14/02/2021 12:37

I think heels were over even before covid and now I think they look extremely dated.
Loved them and wore them throughout my 20s, but they are absolutely awful things let's face it.

potatopot · 14/02/2021 12:42

I like them and will be wearing them again when back in the office. I wear block heeled / thicker heeled ones though, there is no way I'd wear stilettos. I find them comfortable, and I have very short legs so it make me feel I look better and so more confident.

BridgertonBunkUp · 14/02/2021 12:52

For those who don’t ever wear heels, what would you wear to a formal event, upscale evening party, wedding etc?

Genuinely interested, as I never know what else one would wear with an evening dress (sorry if I sound like Princess Margaret Grin).

Yubaba · 14/02/2021 12:55

I don’t wear them, I’m definitely a trainer wearer.
I do have a couple of pairs for dressing up for dinner/weddings/nights out but the probably come out of my wardrobe once or twice a year. I even wore trainers when I got married.
I’d rather be comfortable, I have stupidly wide feet and I just can’t walk in them.

PickAChew · 14/02/2021 12:58

One thing I've missed this past year is the spectacle of someone slightly tipsy trying to negotiate our cobbled city centre streets in stilettos. It's not a good look.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 14/02/2021 13:04

I thought yes but have just bought a good pair of heeled court shoes off the Kurt Geiger sale (over £100 down to £30 odd) because I’ve just binged on Call My Agent and it’s full of Parisiennes looking fab in heels.

I do thing some outfits need heels. Wedges and solid heels don’t count as proper heels to my mind as they’re comfy.

I do love wearing heels - there’s something about them. But my boss at work is quite short and I don’t want to tower over him Grin

Ccwanker · 14/02/2021 13:04

Nooooooooo. I love love love my heels. I’ve been in heels since I was 16. Still wear stilettos to work, I can run in them if I need to!

I did get told off by a consultant orthopaedic surgeon though who told me what damage I was doing to my back wearing them and now every time he sees me he wags his finger at me Hmm

I feel frumpy and sloppy footed in flats
