Is this ring awful?

Apologies for the grotty hands. I’ve just inherited a great haul of jewellery. It’s all the most blingy 80’s stuff you could imagine - proper Del Boy style gold chains etc. and I was planning on pawning the lot and hopefully using the money for a holiday.

Anyway, I’ve sort of fallen in love with this ring. It’s ruby and gold so probably not worth much at all. My sister has been absolutely ripping the piss out of me for wearing it though Sad. She thinks it looks like something you’d get in a cracker and that the only reason I could be so attracted to it is because it’s haunted and I’m going to get possessed by the spirit of my dead relative and go on a murder spree.

Is it terrible? I never really wear jewellery at all but for some reason I suddenly want to wear a massive 80’s ruby ring. I’m fairly certain it’s not cursed but even if it was that kind of adds to the appeal.

It's beautiful. Dainty and tasteful.

Red stones can be quite problematic to evaluate. The ruby posted a few pages ago could be a rubelite or a spinel or even a rhodalite garnet. Unless it’s tested by a jeweller, a pinky reddish stone isn’t necessarily a Ruby. That doesn’t mean the stone is not attractive. A big ruby is worth a lot of money.

I’m not sure what the long white pieces are in the Art Deco style necklace belonging to the op. I was actually wondering if the white pieces were ivory. They don’t look like pearl as they are not the right shape. The triangular pendant is interesting. Not sure what the stone might be. Is it reddish/pink or an amethyst? The necklace could be extended. You could get a section added which clips into each end of the clasps. Extending this type of necklace can make it turn over and not sit properly when it’s worn so discuss with a jeweller what’s best if you want to extend it.

Although gold is expensive, not everyone likes chunky styles. The ring looks like a cabochon garnet to me. Are the necklaces hallmarked or marked with gold carat? If 18ct then they are nice pieces of jewellery.

I like it.

chicken12 · 03/11/2020 04:53

love it

BullBailey · 03/11/2020 05:10

I never understand these posts that seem to be checking for acceptance - If you like it, who gives a fuck?! Wear what you like, who cares what anyone else thinks! Be unapologetically you. If you wear something with confidence then you will carry it off. Screw anyone else’s opinion.

Malvarrosa · 03/11/2020 05:40

It’s a small and modest ring by ‘80s standards. Most people won’t even notice it.

Neither is it worth the cost of changing the setting. Just wear it and enjoy it.

A lot of high quality jewellery from the 1920s onwards was set in platinum but some people then much preferred yellow gold, definitely in the 50s. Fashions change. Some people like heavier jewellery of that period too. It really doesn’t matter what you like. Jewellery is worn to please the wearer.

Some rubies are quite pink rather than blood red it depends where they are from
I’ve had this one years
I still think yours might be a garnet the rope setting is a classic

It's beautiful.

goldenharvest · 03/11/2020 09:10

I think it's garnett too. I used to have a ring like this but lost it somewhere

OneofPansPeople · 03/11/2020 09:18

I also love the necklace your dc wore in the photo.
I would have that redone on a more modern chain.

Huelva94 · 07/11/2020 18:55

I like it... Does it really matter if its ruby, garnet, red spinel, red sapphire... It's a beautiful ring... By the way, It could be any of the above... Lucky you!!

Understandingnotignorance · 07/11/2020 19:00

It's lovely!

lborgia · 08/11/2020 02:30

The chain with the blue enamel/ pearl pendant looks pretty serious. Def take to a proper jewellers, not a pawn shop!

Ring is beautiful and def not 80s bling look.. much more classic.

Holothane · 08/11/2020 02:51

You wear the ring it’s lovely you like it and that’s all that matters.

Deathraystare · 08/11/2020 07:48

Well, if you like it , wear it!

Personally (and it is personally) there is something a bit 'Argos' about it. That sounds snobby and I DO wear Argos stuff. But please don't be put off wearing it. I have only seen a photo of it. It probably does look nice. I agree it looks like a garnet. Mum had a lovely Garnet ring. That is, until she got it cleaned. What I thought was a lovely black/red stone was almost a boring ruby looking thing when it was returned. I do like Garnets though , which is just as well as it is my birth stone!!!

Deathraystare · 08/11/2020 07:50

On second thoughts, it does look nice so ignore my first comments!!
