Is this ring awful?

Apologies for the grotty hands. I’ve just inherited a great haul of jewellery. It’s all the most blingy 80’s stuff you could imagine - proper Del Boy style gold chains etc. and I was planning on pawning the lot and hopefully using the money for a holiday.

Anyway, I’ve sort of fallen in love with this ring. It’s ruby and gold so probably not worth much at all. My sister has been absolutely ripping the piss out of me for wearing it though Sad. She thinks it looks like something you’d get in a cracker and that the only reason I could be so attracted to it is because it’s haunted and I’m going to get possessed by the spirit of my dead relative and go on a murder spree.

Is it terrible? I never really wear jewellery at all but for some reason I suddenly want to wear a massive 80’s ruby ring. I’m fairly certain it’s not cursed but even if it was that kind of adds to the appeal.

Adore a chunk of garnet. That's a great ring.

(Also, I once had a ring out of a cracker that I wore to an offkilter white tie evening and got crazy compliments on it. Costume jewelry can be the best.)

The ring is nice enough but the necklace is amazing & worth more too. I'd consider buying it if it came up at auction. Look for a hall Mark. Other necklaces look nice too

Dixiee · 01/11/2020 23:13

I don't like it OP only because I design jewellery. That ruby is beautiful though and can stand out amazingly in other settings and I'm assuming you are young (your hands look very young) but yes it's vintage and only if you're into that sort of stuff it will work out for you.

I like it, and it really suits your hand. Your sister has no class!

justasking111 · 01/11/2020 23:20

It is lovely, I wear my garnet at christmas time mostly such a rich colour, enjoy it. I want to see the rest of that 80s bling now.

Longdistance · 01/11/2020 23:24

@FeckArseDrinkGirls this is the ring I have. I was told it was 18 and 22ct yellow gold with a ruby. It only fits my little finger now, well it’s loose. I’d say yours would be a garnet but get your jewellery looked at professionally.

@oakleaffy I’ve dropped you a pm but if it’s not mine, then a post on the next door app might be a good idea?

Jasharps · 01/11/2020 23:27

Love it

QueenOfCakeandCoffee · 01/11/2020 23:33

Try putting the stuff on eBay before pawning it, you might get more

PickAChew · 01/11/2020 23:35

It's very simple and rather lovely. A very classical style.

Scotmummy1216 · 01/11/2020 23:35

I think its lovely

greendress789 · 01/11/2020 23:35

I like it!

joystir59 · 01/11/2020 23:40

It suits you and is lovely. Its a garnet I think

Thewiseoneincognito · 01/11/2020 23:57

The ring is lovely. It would look amazing against a great manicure.

MadameMeursault · 02/11/2020 00:07

Really pretty, it’s a keeper!

Toddlerteaplease · 02/11/2020 00:22

I was disappointed with it as it wasn't the moodstone ring I had desperately wanted from the Argos catalogue*

And we totally believed they showed our mood! GrinGrin

i love her thought process.

OutComeTheWolves · 02/11/2020 01:16

I love it

SingingInTheShithouse · 02/11/2020 01:31

Oh I love it & I don't usually like gold

Eaumyword · 02/11/2020 08:14

I love it too! I agree, think it looks like garnet, but if ruby, would be worth a reasonable amount, as it's a large stone. Keep it, its fab!

stevalnamechanger · 02/11/2020 13:07

I love it . She has no taste ;) good job she isn't fighting you for it

InglouriousBasterd · 02/11/2020 13:15

I love it and I’m placemarking for when you get the rest valued Grin

Darklane · 02/11/2020 13:35

Don’t pawn ant jewellery you don’t want to keep. Take it to your local auction house they’ll value it & get a better price for it, it’s in their interest to get you the best price possible as they’ll earn more buyer’s commission.
It is definitely a garnet, the hallmark will tell you the carat of gold. Looking at it I’d suspect 9ct.

MiddleClassMother · 02/11/2020 13:44

No I love it! It looks very classy and beautiful.

Now I would have that made bigger for a ring finger. It is gorgeous
