Is this ring awful?

Apologies for the grotty hands. I’ve just inherited a great haul of jewellery. It’s all the most blingy 80’s stuff you could imagine - proper Del Boy style gold chains etc. and I was planning on pawning the lot and hopefully using the money for a holiday.

Anyway, I’ve sort of fallen in love with this ring. It’s ruby and gold so probably not worth much at all. My sister has been absolutely ripping the piss out of me for wearing it though Sad. She thinks it looks like something you’d get in a cracker and that the only reason I could be so attracted to it is because it’s haunted and I’m going to get possessed by the spirit of my dead relative and go on a murder spree.

Is it terrible? I never really wear jewellery at all but for some reason I suddenly want to wear a massive 80’s ruby ring. I’m fairly certain it’s not cursed but even if it was that kind of adds to the appeal.

The ring is gorgeous. I bet she’s only being snippy because she is jealous and wants it!

Happyheartlovelife · 02/11/2020 14:26

Rubies and gold

It wouldn't be cheap. Ruby isn't cheap!

I love it

Genericnewnumusername · 02/11/2020 14:50

@Thewiseoneincognito

The ring is lovely. It would look amazing against a great manicure.
Grin did you mean this to sound so passive aggressively rude about the OPs nails? I’m genuinely not asking in the head tilt Mumsnet way - more wondering if you realised how that comment came across!

OP I love the ring! And please get everything valued just to at least satisfy my curiosity!

simiisme · 02/11/2020 17:35

I really like it.
It has a sort of medieval vibe to me. If you Google 'medieval cabochon' you'll see that I'm not completely mad.

mrslrc · 02/11/2020 17:40

I love that, it’s gorgeous! It’s a nice size and suits your hand.

Rainbowsparkle · 02/11/2020 17:50

I looooove that!

Yogalola · 02/11/2020 18:04

Looks lovely, but make sure it’s been cleaned properly to ensure no bad vibes remain on it.

Eaumyword · 02/11/2020 18:06

Ooh yes to a valuation - I'd be so interested to know what it is. Something tells me it isn't £££ valuable, but I'd be excited for you if it was! I'm not too knowledgeable on gemstones, but thought rubies tend to be more valuable if they are lighter? That might be rubbish of course!
My guess is still garnet, but it's really unusual and lovely!

Starwind74 · 02/11/2020 18:10

I think it is great, and not at all blingy. Even if it was, if you like it, that’s all that matters.

RiskIt4Biscuit · 02/11/2020 18:26

Liberty has something similar so it must be fashionable:

I think it's lovely - I also quite like the other bits of jewellery you've posted pictures of :)

Tomasinabombadil · 02/11/2020 18:31

Love it💕🙂

Pbbananabagel · 02/11/2020 18:40
  1. It’s gorgeous
  2. The price of gold sky rockets in times of crisis- probably worth more than you think...
  3. Definitely looks like a garnet
CharlottesComplicatedWeb · 02/11/2020 18:41

It’s lovely. Lucky you.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 02/11/2020 18:49

Have you weighed the items? Gold is about $63 a gram at the moment (pure gold)

Also agree its probably a garnet with the pendant to match. The ceramic pendant in the Art Deco style is very pretty. I wouldn't sell it on!

Pbbananabagel · 02/11/2020 18:49

Just saw your necklaces pic- if they’re solid gold then you will be VERY pleasantly surprised by the valuation. The value of the gold itself By weight will likely be very high.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 02/11/2020 18:50

Just my thinking @Pbbananabagel!

Foxywoody · 02/11/2020 19:07

I think it is beautiful and I like the setting too.

Boxerbinky · 02/11/2020 20:07

I love it.. I like vintage pieces though.. and semi precious stones. I ran stores for a very modern high end jeweller a few years ago and that price wouldn’t look out of place. If you love it, definitely keep it and wear it xx

Boxerbinky · 02/11/2020 20:08

Piece not price Confused

CauliflowerBalti · 02/11/2020 20:08

Just to say I found a ring once that my witchy sister said was cursed and I didn’t believe her...

...it ended up having to be cut off my finger in hospital following a nasty break.

Sure yours is fine though. Confused

And I love it.

Longdistance · 02/11/2020 20:09

@justasking111 it was my dms. She gave it to me about 20 years ago as it didn’t fit her finger and she wanted my to have it. She most likely bought it in Hungary where she’s from. It’s not hallmarked so difficult to make out, but I’d reckon 1960’s or there abouts as a timeline.

Shewhomustbeobeyed1 · 02/11/2020 21:10

It’s lovely. Definitely a garnet. My birthstone

mimosaadorna · 02/11/2020 21:13

I’m a Jeweller, and a Jewellery historian, and I’ve been doing this 35 years. I also “read” people’s Jewellery for them sometimes ( this is called psychometry). I inherently believe that a piece of jewellery will “speak to you”, and if it does it should be yours......regardless of what anyone else thinks

EL8888 · 02/11/2020 21:14

I like it! Enjoy your cursed ring

PawPrincess · 02/11/2020 21:15

Gorgeous stone, I'd get it reset in white gold or silver in modern style.
