Is this ring awful?

Apologies for the grotty hands. I’ve just inherited a great haul of jewellery. It’s all the most blingy 80’s stuff you could imagine - proper Del Boy style gold chains etc. and I was planning on pawning the lot and hopefully using the money for a holiday.

Anyway, I’ve sort of fallen in love with this ring. It’s ruby and gold so probably not worth much at all. My sister has been absolutely ripping the piss out of me for wearing it though Sad. She thinks it looks like something you’d get in a cracker and that the only reason I could be so attracted to it is because it’s haunted and I’m going to get possessed by the spirit of my dead relative and go on a murder spree.

Is it terrible? I never really wear jewellery at all but for some reason I suddenly want to wear a massive 80’s ruby ring. I’m fairly certain it’s not cursed but even if it was that kind of adds to the appeal.

I think that sits lovely on you.

Duemarch2021 · 01/11/2020 21:40

I personally dont love it but i prefer white gold to yellow gold and would probably go for a blue stone rather than ruby but that's just my own taste.. it's not bad, I'm sure pawn brokers were paying a lot for gold stuff at one point why dont you go and get it all valued just for your own knowlege then decide if you want to keep it

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 01/11/2020 21:41

could the tiny necklace be an anklet OP ?

MrsCrosbyNRTB · 01/11/2020 21:41

I wanted to start making all kinds of HILARIOUS Gollum my preciousssssss type remarks but actually that’s really nice.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 01/11/2020 21:42

It looks older than it is & is very pretty.
It's tough if your DSis doesn't like it, but I'm getting a feeling that you & your DSis give each other a lot of good natured ribbing (hope I'm right on that one)

Makinglists · 01/11/2020 21:42

Like it!

StatisticallyChallenged · 01/11/2020 21:43

I think with a new, thinner chain that pendant would look very modern - it puts me in mind of a lot of Le Vian stuff (they do lots of garnets)

garnet one
tanzanite but similar vibe

ForSaleChesterDraws · 01/11/2020 21:43

I think the comments say more about your sister than you. It’s a beautiful ring. Enjoy it.

xanthippe8 · 01/11/2020 21:44

It's a beauty, keep it.

Grapesoda7 · 01/11/2020 21:44

It's lovely, my friend has just had something very similar made for herself and it cost her a fortune.

PeaceAndHarmoneeee · 01/11/2020 21:44

If you really hate the rest of the stuff you've been left you could get it all melted down and remodelled into something you do like?

Viviennemary · 01/11/2020 21:44

It's fine. And I agree it's probably a garnet. I doubt it's a ruby in that setting.,

FeckArseDrinkGirls · 01/11/2020 21:45

Sister definitely isn’t jealous, just taking the piss. Honestly, the jewellery haul is incredible - it’s all very Dallas inspired stuff which is why she found it so funny when I found something I actually liked.

Also i agree that your sis is a bit jealous 😅 ... and that gold necklace that your daughter is wearing looks like it could be worth a few bob??

stillsomewhatsheldonesque · 01/11/2020 21:46

I think it suits your hand and it is quite lovely.

If it brings you joy to wear it? Then you must do so. Smile

Metabigot · 01/11/2020 21:49

Why do you care what your sister thinks? Genuine question.
If it was me, I'd wear it if I like it and not if I didn't. Stuff what my sister thought.

SoulofanAggron · 01/11/2020 21:49

If you like it, you like it, it's just a matter of taste. I've seen a lot worse. My mum has a garnet ring, agree with PP's that it probably is garnet.

Candleabra · 01/11/2020 21:50

It's lovely. Not that my opinion matters if you like it, wear it and love it!

I would check with a jeweller whether it's a ruby though. If it was listed as such for the insurance, it's more likely. Rubies can definitely be that dark. I'm sure I saw an antiques roadshow where someone had a load of antique jewellery they assumed was costume paste and some were real gems.

Doobydoo · 01/11/2020 21:52

It is fab..a classic..very stylish. Your sis can shop at Argos or Ratners for her jewels! Though I was laughing re her views on it..ie being possessed.

GlamourSpider · 01/11/2020 21:52

I really like it!

tillytoodles1 · 01/11/2020 21:53

It's lovely.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/11/2020 21:55

If that necklace on your daughter is gold it's worth a fair bit as it's dead thick !

Dominicgoings · 01/11/2020 21:55

Love it. Love all coloured gems!

emilybrontescorsett · 01/11/2020 21:55

I th think my mum had a ring like that back in the day.

Longdistance · 01/11/2020 21:56

I love it. It looks like a ring that can tell a few stories. I like the necklace too. Are there any more pictures of the stuff? I’d love to see it.

My dm gave me a ring that’s 18 and 22ct yellow gold with a ruby. I’ll post a photo once I’m upstairs. It’s Eastern European, but definitely a ruby as I took it to a jewellers to get a valuation. It’s very similar to yours but the stone is lighter in colour.
