Is this ring awful?

Apologies for the grotty hands. I’ve just inherited a great haul of jewellery. It’s all the most blingy 80’s stuff you could imagine - proper Del Boy style gold chains etc. and I was planning on pawning the lot and hopefully using the money for a holiday.

Anyway, I’ve sort of fallen in love with this ring. It’s ruby and gold so probably not worth much at all. My sister has been absolutely ripping the piss out of me for wearing it though Sad. She thinks it looks like something you’d get in a cracker and that the only reason I could be so attracted to it is because it’s haunted and I’m going to get possessed by the spirit of my dead relative and go on a murder spree.

Is it terrible? I never really wear jewellery at all but for some reason I suddenly want to wear a massive 80’s ruby ring. I’m fairly certain it’s not cursed but even if it was that kind of adds to the appeal.

Love it!

Giraffey1 · 01/11/2020 22:29

It’s lovely and really suits you. And that is all that matters! Whoever left it to you would be very happy to know you were going cherish it.

ElizaCBennett · 01/11/2020 22:31

Snap! Mine is an amethyst; it’s a birth stone ring. I’ve had it about 50 years!

I love it!

MaudTheInvincible · 01/11/2020 22:34

Love that ring! (I think it's a garnet too)

LabradorGalore · 01/11/2020 22:36

It’s lovely!

Hiccupiscal · 01/11/2020 22:40

Its gorgeous, op 😍

IdblowJonSnow · 01/11/2020 22:46

I love it too. Wear it with pride OP! Is your sister a bit jeal?!
I do admire her imagination, if not her taste in jewellery! Wink

lavenderlove · 01/11/2020 22:47

I love it and now I want to see all the other jewellery you inherited!

jessstan1 · 01/11/2020 22:48

It's a beautiful ring. I'd wear one like that any day.

PigletJohn · 01/11/2020 22:56

The really good thing is that you like it, and you've got it.

Whereas your sister doesn't like it, and hasn't got it.

Looks like the best result all round.

WhenTheDogBites · 01/11/2020 22:59

Those necklaces are lovely - really unusual! What a fascinating trove of treasure. I agree the one with the pearls looks valuable - and their value will have increased significantly over 40 years.

yetanothernamitynamechange · 01/11/2020 22:59

Its lovely. If the rest of the jewelery is as you describe "del boy" style, is it possible that you and your sister are both looking at it in association to that? I do that in shops - the same item can look lovely and tasteful if its surrounded by other lovely things but would look bleurgh if surrounded by tat...

DanceWMe · 01/11/2020 23:00

It's pretty cool!

WhenTheDogBites · 01/11/2020 23:01

Yeah imagine that garnet necklace over a simple black dress and it would look fabulous.

Forgot to say I love the ring too! Its gorgeous - wear it with pride!

SirVixofVixHall · 01/11/2020 23:03

Lovely OP, garnets are such a gorgeous colour.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 01/11/2020 23:03

Both ring and pendant are lush!

foxtiger · 01/11/2020 23:04

I like the style of it although I prefer silver on me. I'd wear the exact same ring in silver. I wouldn't describe it as "massive" either - I've seen much bigger stones and liked some of them. I also like the sentiment behind wearing it on that finger after moving on from your divorce!

If you like gold in general, I wonder if the triangular centrepiece of the necklace modelled by the 3 year old could be made wearable by changing the chain for a longer and thinner one. It's a nice stone and setting.

yetanothernamitynamechange · 01/11/2020 23:05

Actually looking at the photos you posted all the other jewelery looks to be a lot of different styles - Georgian/victorian style garnets, that art deco white necklace. I think all together therefore they look a bit much but if you look at them individually some others are quite nice.

Smellbellina · 01/11/2020 23:05

A) I love it
B) wear what you are drawn to

MrsEricBana · 01/11/2020 23:05

I like it too. My mother has a very beautiful garnet ring in a similar setting. It suits you Smile

Fizbosshoes · 01/11/2020 23:05

One thing to be aware of is an insurance valuation (even from 40 years ago) is the cost of replacing like with like at new retail value.....not an estimation of what you would get if you sold it.
However gold prices will probably be a lot higher than they were 40 years ago so worth checking.

Smellbellina · 01/11/2020 23:06

Love the amethyst! My favourite ring is an Opal surrounded by amethysts, unfortunately it’s tiny and barely fits now.

Montybojangles · 01/11/2020 23:07

Lovely ring. I think the piece on the left of the last pic might be a pocket watch chain and fob possibly.

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 01/11/2020 23:08

I read your post first, and geared myself to laugh before opening the picture- and it's gorgeous OP.

I love it. Definitely a keeper!
