Is this ring awful?

Apologies for the grotty hands. I’ve just inherited a great haul of jewellery. It’s all the most blingy 80’s stuff you could imagine - proper Del Boy style gold chains etc. and I was planning on pawning the lot and hopefully using the money for a holiday.

Anyway, I’ve sort of fallen in love with this ring. It’s ruby and gold so probably not worth much at all. My sister has been absolutely ripping the piss out of me for wearing it though Sad. She thinks it looks like something you’d get in a cracker and that the only reason I could be so attracted to it is because it’s haunted and I’m going to get possessed by the spirit of my dead relative and go on a murder spree.

Is it terrible? I never really wear jewellery at all but for some reason I suddenly want to wear a massive 80’s ruby ring. I’m fairly certain it’s not cursed but even if it was that kind of adds to the appeal.

Your description I would have said sounds awful...but then I saw it - it’s lovely.

RoseyLentil · 01/11/2020 21:07

Lovely ring and most likely to be a farmer not a ruby. Check if it has a hallmark on the inside of the band. It may be quite old as garnet jewellery was very popular during Queen Victoria's reign - her fav gem apparently ♦️💎

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 01/11/2020 21:08

Well, I can't say I love it personally, but I don't hate it either, it's just 'a ring' you know. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Your sister is a 🧙‍♀️. Maybe she secretly wants it.

Did you not like the person that died & gave you all her jewellery?

Teakind · 01/11/2020 21:09

It’s a beautiful ring!

Chickychickydodah · 01/11/2020 21:09

I’d wear it ❤️

ZaZathecat · 01/11/2020 21:11

It's lovely and you'll be glad you didn't get rid of it one day.

WeirdlyOdd · 01/11/2020 21:11

It's unusual and individual, so if you like it, you should wear it and stuff everyone else.

Don't write it off value-wise because it's a ruby, people often seem to assume rubies aren't worth much! Depending on the ruby a stone that large could be anything from about £100 (e.g. if heat treated), to £20,000+ if it's a large natural, untreated ruby. The type of gold might give you a clue as to whether it's an expensive piece or not - if it's only gold plated or 9 carat then I wouldn't get too excited about the value of the ruby. However, as someone else has mentioned, it might not be a ruby at all but a garnet, as it does seem quite dark (though rubies vary from pink to dark blood red). A garnet will be worth much less. You can get it valued at a jeweller if you like.

The cost isn't important though (except for insurance purposes), if you like it, wear it.

UmmH · 01/11/2020 21:15

From thread title I was prepared for something awful, but I love it and would definitely wear it. In fact, I'm going to look for something similar right now Grin

Disfordarkchocolate · 01/11/2020 21:17

I think it's lovely too.

jambeforeclottedcream · 01/11/2020 21:21

Not normally my taste but I actually really like that ring. Definitely keep it

Pickle2828 · 01/11/2020 21:23

Are you sure it's Ruby? It looks more like garnet from the photo. If it was Ruby I'd sell it as its a more precious gemstone. If its garnet I'd keep it as it probably means more to you than you'd get if you sold it.

RB68 · 01/11/2020 21:27

Agree re Garnet as well - there is a deep red wine colour to it whereas rubies are more red than burgundy. That said they re still of value - and that is a whopper.

The other gold generally is bought by weight to gold value and stones are not of value. SSo watch gold value for a bit and pick your time to cash i

LizzieMacQueen · 01/11/2020 21:27

We need to see the other pieces now @FeckArseDrinkGirls

Hairydogmummy · 01/11/2020 21:29

It's lovely! I love vintage jewellery. If it's not the Ruby tho I'd be wondering where that is! Much more valuable! I'd deffo wear this for an every day ring. Don't keep it for best, it would look gorgeous with this season's fashion especially faux leather, jumper dresses, anything with puff sleeves or romantic lace. Lucky you!

Time40 · 01/11/2020 21:31

Ooooh, lovely! Just my sort of thing, actually.

We need to see a photo of this great blingy 80s haul, OP. We really, really do.

LazyLucille · 01/11/2020 21:34

It's really beautiful OP. If there is a good and ruby ring on the insurance can you not pick that out of the other jewellery? I would love to see the rest too.

FeckArseDrinkGirls · 01/11/2020 21:34

This is my 3yo modelling one of the other pieces. I’m not particularly thick necked but I could barely get it to fasten without it suffocating me. Unless it’s some kind of bracelet for a massive wrist?

Your sister sounds jealous.
I don't like it but it isn't my sort of thing.

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/11/2020 21:36

I’d take it into a jeweller after lockdown and see what it is but it is nice, the cuts beautiful.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 01/11/2020 21:37

it is beautiful IMO.

I agree it is more likely to be garnet at that size than ruby but you never know and frankly it doesn't matter as you love it for how it looks not what it is worth.

LucillevsLowkee · 01/11/2020 21:37

Your sister is so yesterday. Yellow (and rose) gold are making a huge comeback! White gold is on the way out. Grin

That ring is gorgeous, you have beautiful taste.

FenellaVelour · 01/11/2020 21:38

Yes it’s garnet and it’s lovely!

Whybot · 01/11/2020 21:39

I like it.
up to you what you like, and wear.

VioletSunset · 01/11/2020 21:39

I absolutely love it

wiltingflower · 01/11/2020 21:39

Lovely ring, very classic and timeless, simple enough to wear with practically anything
