Is this ring awful?

Apologies for the grotty hands. I’ve just inherited a great haul of jewellery. It’s all the most blingy 80’s stuff you could imagine - proper Del Boy style gold chains etc. and I was planning on pawning the lot and hopefully using the money for a holiday.

Anyway, I’ve sort of fallen in love with this ring. It’s ruby and gold so probably not worth much at all. My sister has been absolutely ripping the piss out of me for wearing it though Sad. She thinks it looks like something you’d get in a cracker and that the only reason I could be so attracted to it is because it’s haunted and I’m going to get possessed by the spirit of my dead relative and go on a murder spree.

Is it terrible? I never really wear jewellery at all but for some reason I suddenly want to wear a massive 80’s ruby ring. I’m fairly certain it’s not cursed but even if it was that kind of adds to the appeal.

I’m not particularly thick necked but I could barely get it to fasten without it suffocating me.

That's the hands of a long dead occultist around your throat. There should be a third item with a similar gem- wear all three and the power of necromancy will be yours. Plus they look pretty.

Lovely ring and most likely to be a farmer not a ruby.

I'm no expert in gems or agriculture but it looks more like a ruby than a farmer to me.

mathanxiety · 01/11/2020 21:57

It's gorgeous. I love garnet.

SarahAndQuack · 01/11/2020 22:00

I don't personally like it, but lots of people would, and it is certainly not in the slightest like what you'd get in a cracker! To me, it doesn't look blingy or 80s - it looks like repro Georgian, and nicely done. Your sister is being very silly.

I but lots of antique furniture, because it's what I like, and I've realised people will often be nasty about anything second hand. It's strange. And it says more about them than you. Just remember: if you love it, then it is special. It doesn't matter how much it cost or how old it is. If you love it, it was worth it.

SentientAndCognisant · 01/11/2020 22:01

It’s really striking & very beautiful. Lush indeed

CrochetToTheMoon · 01/11/2020 22:02

I love that, it’s absolutely gorgeous

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 01/11/2020 22:03

I love your ring too! I would wear it, definitely. Haunted or not! Grin

Maybe your sister is just envious and wants you to get rid of it so she can have it... Wink

Fizbosshoes · 01/11/2020 22:04

Apart from how nice the garnet is, now is a good time to scrap anything you dont want (rather than pawn) as gold prices are pretty high at the moment

PearlyPear · 01/11/2020 22:05

It's gorgeous and your sis is jealous Grin

These are the bits that were put in the ‘valuable’ box of jewellery. To my (obviously very uneducated in jewellery) eyes the only thing that looks particularly valuable is the big jewel thing. Not even sure what the other ones are but they’ve got insurance for a few thousand from about 40 years ago. I’m just not 100% sure that the insurance documents actually match the right bits of jewellery if you see what I mean.

I think its a Garnet too. Does your sister want it herself. I like it.

Nanny0gg · 01/11/2020 22:07

@FeckArseDrinkGirls

I knew I was right! I’ve only just got divorced and the only jewellery I’ve ever worn has been my wedding ring so I’m going to wear the cursed ring in it’s place. I’m feeling very pleased I’m not only having my good taste validated but wearing a ring on my ring finger that I chose just for me from a selection given to me by a dead woman .
I really like it.
SunshineCake · 01/11/2020 22:08

The question isn't whether the wrong is awful but why the fuck are you listening to your stupid sister?

FWIW I think the ring is a timeless classic and I think that when it isn't my taste.

Take them to an auction house and see what they say
TrickyD · 01/11/2020 22:12

The price of gold has gone up a lot in 40 years. You really should take it to a good jeweller and get a proper valuation. You will have to pay, but it will be worth it. Take the old insurance documents with you. They should be able to sort out what is what. If by any lucky chance it is the same jeweller, you would probably be charged less for the valuation, possibly just for the difference in the value between then and now.

timegoesbysoslowly · 01/11/2020 22:13

That ring is gorgeous, don't care what anyone else thinks, if you like it wear it

SunshineCake · 01/11/2020 22:14

The necklace with the white piece and diamonds looks like it would be worth something.

Ferrari458 · 01/11/2020 22:16

I love the ring and I love the necklace with the white decoration, it looks a bit art deco.

Silvershimmering · 01/11/2020 22:17

I thought garnet too, probably 9ct gold.
Looks pretty, I’d wear it

JaffaCake70 · 01/11/2020 22:18

I love it, I'm a fan of big, dark stones and I think this is very pretty. I would def wear it x

oakleaffy · 01/11/2020 22:20

It looks lovely, and not at all 'Haunted'.
If a Ring or other bot of jewellery feels good, it is good.

I found a silver 'chain' {Distinctive} bracelet this weekend in Redland, Bristol, at Cotham Gardens, I'd like to reunite it with it's owner...But how?

ElspethFlashman · 01/11/2020 22:21

I like it, its nice and simple and i've always had a soft spot for garnets. Theyre a lovely underrated stone.

oakleaffy · 01/11/2020 22:22

PS...I think it looks like a Garnet..Rubies tend to be very ''Red'' and a fair bit smaller...A very pretty ring.

Goodnamesalltaken · 01/11/2020 22:23

I have a very similar ring slightly bigger, it's a garnet. I wear it on my index finger and get compliments all the time.

Longdistance · 01/11/2020 22:24

@FeckArseDrinkGirls get yourself to a reputable jewellers to get a valuation on your things. They definitely look gold, not sure on the stones.
Any hallmarks on the jewellery? Do you know if it has come from another country perhaps?

PearlyPear · 01/11/2020 22:26

Check for any makers marks on or near the clasps OP. Even paste/non precious stone jewellery can have makers marks and be valuable for that rather than just the materials used, this is especially meaningful on vintage jewellery. There is lots of vintage jewellery where the makers marks are what make it valuable. If any precious metal was used it'll be stamped with that info too, obviously.
