Beauty Advent Calendars 2020

After a weird year, who is thinking about treating themselves? Can’t believe how quickly this has come round!

Nothing is out yet but some places are keeping waiting lists for notifications e.g. Cult Beauty. The John Lewis sneak peak looks promising. And I believe Body Shop is out the end of this month.

Any you will be looking out for? I’m thinking of splurging on a decent one this year — I had serious envy over Cult Beauty last year. I’ve also become a huge SpaceNK fan this year so I’ll have my eye out to see what they’re producing.

My big surprise hit last year was Holland and Barrett — super cheap and some brilliant items. If it’s as good this year I might end up with that as a bonus.

I cannot wait. I had Debenhams last year and still have some pieces left over.
Might get M&S for November, although I'm currently using the summer beauty box which is much better value (products are mostly full sized) so might not. I think I'll buy a luxury one for December. I think we all deserve it this year

BunniesLoveBananas · 17/08/2020 23:22

I got M&S last year but that was the second time so not sure I want the same again. It was very similar.

I got some good things on the swap thread.

I'd like something else but one with things I'll actually use. Maybe ESPA.

Make up excites me the most but I haven't worn much during lockdown so I think that would be a waste.

Might treat myself to some new stuff from the holiday collections instead. We'll see.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 17/08/2020 23:38

I'm looking at the Selfridges one for this year. I usually get M & S but managed to save £3g during lockdown so am going to splurge this year. It has byredo and By Terry!

Franticbutterfly · 17/08/2020 23:41

I am fan of beauty advent calendars. I usually get given the M&S one and my husband buys me a more expensive one like Liberty or Net a Porter as an anniversary gift. I've hoping the net a porter one will be as good as last year. I'm not as impressed by the Liberty one this year or last, and feel it isn't quite as good value as the 2018 and 2017 calendar.

If it were up to me I would by 13 calendars a year to make it so I had something to open every day!

Bumbl · 17/08/2020 23:53

I can't believe it is time for advent calendars again!

Last year I got the M&S and Look Fantastic ones. Like other people have said I found the M&S one to be quite samey so I will give that a miss. Look Fantastic was very good again so may get that.

I like a mix of both makeup and skincare, but not so much of a fan of bath salts and oils etc or things for the body.

IHeartSusanDey · 18/08/2020 11:47

Just looked at Selfridges. It is an absolutely gorgeous box!! Really classy looking. But it has two of my 'pet hates' just because they are so frequent...Nars orgasm blusher and Eve Lom cleanser. Plus I don't like contour make up. So that one is out.

beguilingeyes · 18/08/2020 20:57

Fortnum and Mason have got one. Looks lush.

I've generally refilled my 2016 liberty advent calendar with a GWP but this year I'm thinking about the diptyque one as I love candles and have a lot of beauty products.

IHeartSusanDey · 19/08/2020 08:10

Fortnum looks incredible. The products are exactly what I would use. I'm dying to try the Cult 51 cream. The Holland and Barrett looks even better than last year...I'm definitely getting it.

I think I have changed my mind about Liberty...looked more closely at it and not so keen, after all.

OchonAgusOchonO · 19/08/2020 10:21

@IHeartSusanDey - where did you see the details on this year's H&B one? I've had a quick search but can only see last year's one. Dd had it and it was brilliant.

OchonAgusOchonO · 19/08/2020 12:17

Found it. beautyadventcalendar.net

CointreauVersial · 19/08/2020 13:11

I get the M&S one every year, and have done since it started. There are a few "samey" things (please stop with the black eyeliner!), and always one or two items I won't use, but there are two teenage girls in the house, and my mum close by, so between us it all gets used.

I find it's the perfect balance - not too spendy, but still excellent quality. I don't want a cheapo thing full of hairbands and lipgloss, nor can I justify something luxurious like the Liberty one, much as I'd like to (not using an M&S mini is one thing, but I would feel very guilty if there were expensive items not being used).

The H&B one sounds interesting! I was a bit too late to buy one last year, but I was tempted.

That Percy & Reed "No Oil" Hair Oil I used for a few years after discovering it in the M&S advent calendar, but as I've got greyer I find I now need an "Oil" Hair Oil. Grin

missl1 · 19/08/2020 13:31

Aren't all these mini plastic packages just an unnecessary environmental disaster - a small drop in the plastic ocean for sure, but hardly essential. It's consumerism gone mad.

Fiftysixthnamechange · 19/08/2020 13:56

I've had one from liberty for the last few years, but fancy something different this year. The liberty one is great and worth the cost product wise.

IHeartSusanDey · 19/08/2020 14:20

Oh sorry Ochon I was out with the dog. Yes, that's where I found it!! Doesn't it look great?

I wish Fortnum hadn't released theirs so early as it looks brilliant but I can only afford one luxury calendar and am thinking maybe Cult Beauty or Space NK will knock it out of the park...so might hang on! I'll be so disappointed if they don't and I missed out on this one as I have a feeling it will go soon. #firstworldproblems

IHeartSusanDey · 19/08/2020 14:24

Missl yes I know what you're saying. I only buy a couple each year and wash out the containers to recycle wherever possible. I won't go for any with ridiculous plastic packaging. One year I got a Nivea one and was shocked at the plastic all over it. Never again. But yes - I do worry about the plastic.

endofthetether · 19/08/2020 14:26

I love the L’Occitane ones!

Rebelwithallthecause · 19/08/2020 15:13

The liberty one has a perfect list of products for me.
How much are the liberty calendars usually?

I had the l’occitaine one before and didn’t use most of it and everything was mostly minis.

Would love a dyptique one too

Holothane · 19/08/2020 15:41

Most calendars have stuff I can’t use, bath stuff no bath, mascara, so I’m saving up for Charlotte tilbury lipstick and magic face cream I’m very pale so going for a very pale one.

OchonAgusOchonO · 19/08/2020 16:10

@IHeartSusanDey - Oh sorry Ochon I was out with the dog

No worries. Important to get the dog walked. Although my 2 just looked at me lie I was insane when I suggested they should go out earlier. They both decided to cross their paws rather than risk the rain and wind outside today.

Yes, the H&B one does look great. My dd got it last year and I was really impressed.

Frownette · 19/08/2020 16:40

@LavenderHills

I am going to get the Liberty calendar this year. I had it in 2017 and it was so special. Haven't been able to justify the cost for the last two years, but 2020 has been such a clusterfuck that I am definitely rewarding myself with a treat!
I think I got that in 2017 as well - enjoyed it.

I'd completely forgotten about beauty calendars and don't think I can afford one this year but I can admire vicariously :)

Bananaman123 · 19/08/2020 19:05

Im already obsessed. Last year i had glossybox, lumene and soap and glory. Loved them all especially lumene.

This year im probably getting glossybox, rituals (had a few before and love them) and rather than cult beauty advent im going to try for the gift with purchase instead.

Others ive tried are body shop (ok but didnt use all products), loccitane twice (loved and great way to try products before buying large sizes), decleor which was ok but my skin didnt like some of the products, bomb cosmetics (better suited to kids) same with bubble t. Im sure ive had more 😁

Bump. Anyone any idea which they are after? I’m eyeing up SpaceNK right now but I still want to see what Cult Beauty comes up with.

MotherofTerriers · 27/08/2020 10:38

I'm not going to decide until I see whether I can get the liberty GWP. If I do, then I'll probably cross the liberty calendar off the possible list
