Is this dress too short for 39!?

Pooshweens · 27/11/2019 14:32

I got this dress from whistles which I love until DH said it was a touch too short. I'm 39 years old and don't want to look mutton!

What do you think?

It looks beautiful. It might be too short for bare legs or sheer tights but looks great the way you are wearing it.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 28/11/2019 13:27

I don't think it matters how old you are. I think it looks really nice, it's not that short.

SugarThreat · 28/11/2019 13:35

Its gorgeous! Wear it!

IHaveBrilloHair · 28/11/2019 13:38

I'm 42 and I'm tempted to buy it, I have lots of dresses as short as that.

kjhkj · 28/11/2019 15:12

kjhkj I don't know what corporate environment you worked for, the one I am in would be fine, and I can't imagine a client even noticing most of that outfit.

I work in law. Which I accept is conservative as a profession on the whole (of course there are always exceptions).

I wear close fitting tailored just above the knee length dresses, heels etc and so its quite a glamorous look but is tailored so I get away with it (although my look is far less formal and conservative than most people wear). I also dress that way in court. I couldn't go in with something floaty, skater girl style and very short like the OP is wearing and expect to be taken seriously. But its great for an evening out. I'm not saying the outfit is too young for the OP. I'm just commenting on those who said its fine for work.

Clearly if you work in a boutique or a media company or another more relaxed workplace then its fine.

QueSera · 28/11/2019 15:57

Personally I'm not a fan of short dresses/skirts. But if you're comfortable in it, your age shouldn't be a barrier, you look great!

MintyMabel · 28/11/2019 18:01

I wouldn't wear it.

Mikeysmumma · 28/11/2019 18:54

Yes, sorry..I think it is a bit.
You have great legs but its a bit undignified
Not mutton exactly but not spring fresh lamb either

Courtney555 · 28/11/2019 18:58

I think it's fine when paired with the black tights.

Definitely not with bare legs or sheer tights.

Kirigiri · 28/11/2019 21:36

@Mikeysmumma 🙄🙄🙄 seriously

Dollymixture22 · 28/11/2019 21:51

Dark tights mean you can get away with shorter skirts.

It’s a lovely outfit - you look fabulous😊

I this purely based on the OP's age?

Would you have made the same comment if the OP had posted the same pictures but had said she was 20?

This thread is being discussed at the Other Place.

TurquoiseDress · 28/11/2019 23:14

I wondered what the responses would have been if you had simply posted asking for advice/feedback on the outfit and had not made any mention of your age!

BitOfFun · 29/11/2019 00:01

My comment would have been exactly the same, TurquoiseDress.

jouk20885 · 29/11/2019 05:27

You obviously like it because you wouldn't have bought it otherwise and if you like what you see in the mirror then wear it and don't worry about what someone else says. As some have said, 39 is not "too old" to wear anything and if you've got the figure for it (which you have) and feel comfortable then wear it. God if I had the figure to wear short dress, or dresses full stop lol, then I would.

CountFosco · 29/11/2019 07:54

Everyone looks awesome in their miniskirts. OP you are 10 years younger than me and several inches taller but I still wear miniskirts. Even to work, I don't work in law though so not stuck in the 80s. Hell, about 90% of my colleagues will be wearing jeans to work today since it's Friday. Wear it with pride and agree with a PP that your DH thinks you look hot and is being a teeny bit jealous and doesn't want other men checking you out.

Lizzy1980 · 29/11/2019 07:54

How do you feel about the outfit now OP? Don't know about you but when someone makes a negative comment about something I wear I can never feel right in it again, no matter how much I liked it before. I know it shouldn't matter and we should wear whatever we want as long as we like it ourselves, but once that seed of doubt has been sewn......

What is the "Other Place"?

morgycat · 29/11/2019 08:15

Nothing short of perfect. You look fantastic. Have confidence in yourself.

mistermagpie · 29/11/2019 09:08

I'm the same age and really like that dress but it would be too short for me. Nothing to do with age, it's just a couple of inches too short for my to feel physically comfortable in - I always try to imagine whether I would be happy perching on a bar stool in something if I feel it's a bit short standing up! It looks great on you though so if you feel good then just bloody wear it.

amiapropermum · 29/11/2019 10:46

It looks great on you - age is irrelevant! However I'd check what happens when you sit down or even bend over slightly, eg to pick up your bag or coat. You could end up flashing

confusedmaybe · 29/11/2019 11:30

Wondering how people sit, that dress is not too short to sit in. I have the same dress and can sit down in it. Can also bend down to pick things up, shockingly
You look great OP

PhoneLock · 29/11/2019 11:35

Wondering how people sit, that dress is not too short to sit in.

I think it is only a perceived problem by people who don't wear short skirts/dresses.

The same bending over... you don't. You bend your knees and crouch, keeping your knees together.

LaMigraine · 29/11/2019 11:40

You look amazing!
