Is this dress too short for 39!?

I got this dress from whistles which I love until DH said it was a touch too short. I'm 39 years old and don't want to look mutton!

What do you think?

Not too short - I'm nearly 10 years older than you and wear that length dress.

TheOrigFV45 · 28/11/2019 09:24

Tinyandpetite

Can you bend over in that dress w/o showing your arse?

Dacquoise · 28/11/2019 09:37

You look beautiful in the dress and very elegant with the tights and heels. Nothing to worry about!

KeraStase · 28/11/2019 09:40

You look lovely. I don’t think age is an issue and it’s more where you intend to wear it. And it isn’t suitable office wear, but perfect for a nice dinner/lunch/drinks party (smart casual).

Confused

no civilised woman "bends over" when wearing a dress Grin Grin Grin

or even trousers but still

XXXXXX42 · 28/11/2019 09:49

you look fab!

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 28/11/2019 10:01
  1. You look amazing. and 2. God, what is the need for people to be so bitchy??
PhoneLock · 28/11/2019 10:03

Oh come on - that is not a work outfit and it isn't suitable for a professional office environment.

I think we will have to agree to disagree on this one.

mrssunshinexxx · 28/11/2019 10:03

Looks great and if I had your legs I'd be wearing til much older ! @Pooshweens

theEnglishInpatient · 28/11/2019 10:05

why ever not? Might be a tad casual for a strict board meeting - and I am sure you could just about get away with it, but it's absolutely fine for any corporate environment.

Loveislandaddict · 28/11/2019 10:07

You look great, and not too short, and great set of legs!

BeatriceTheBeast · 28/11/2019 10:10

I agree, it's a bit casual for a very corporate workplace, but most offices are a bit more casual these days. I'd wear it to work if I was slim and petite like the op.

stealthbanana · 28/11/2019 10:13

It’s not too short as such, but I think it’s actually ill fitting.

The seam that’s the top of the ruffle is going right round your bum. To my mind that seam should sit at the bottom of your bum/below your hip bones so that the ruffle doesn’t flare out. It looks odd and makes the whole dress look too small for you (and you have a fab figure so that’s not a criticism of you!)

But not too short, no. (Although definitely too short for the workplace!)

ScatteredMama82 · 28/11/2019 10:14

Not at all, you look great in it. I'm 40 and I would wear it. Like you have on in the photo, I would wear it with thick tights. I'd never wear anything that short without tights now.

goodgirlinchachaheels · 28/11/2019 10:16

It looks lovely.
And you can wear whatever you want, no matter how old you are, as long as it makes you happy.

MB25 · 28/11/2019 10:16

If I had a figure like yours (which I used to 🙄) I'd wear anything I wanted including this dress. If you like it it's all that matters. I'm also 39 😁

kjhkj · 28/11/2019 11:01

It really isn't you know. I now work for myself and so wear jeans most of the time but when I worked for a large corporate firm that outfit would not have been appropriate and you would probably find that someone had a quiet word.

theEnglishInpatient · 28/11/2019 11:03

You have to love this forum and the randomness of the posters replying.

Start a thread about showing your boobs at work because you refuse to wear a bra, and you will be highly praised for being so original, modern, strong minded and any nonsense you can think of.

See a thread from a slim young woman wearing a dress a tad on the casual side maybe, but with dark tights and that absolutely suits her, and you have outraged comments that it's too short, too "girly" and inappropriate for a work environment and the rest. It's not

Hilarious.

theEnglishInpatient · 28/11/2019 11:06

kjhkj
I don't know what corporate environment you worked for, the one I am in would be fine, and I can't imagine a client even noticing most of that outfit.

The only reason I can think why it would be deemed too short would be to make a policy on principle to avoid that someone who can't pull it off like the OP does tries the same thing. You can't tell people they don't have the right body shape for something, so you have to ban it for the entire office, but apart from that.

ginghamtablecloths · 28/11/2019 11:11

The frilly hem looks a bit 'girly' but if you're happy with it why worry about other people's opinions?

LitteStarShine · 28/11/2019 11:34

It's absolutely A-OK in my opinion OP. You have a super figure, the pattern and colours are good, it has long sleeves and a high neck and you're wearing it with black tights. If it was bright turquoise, scrappy and you were wearing it bare legged with black platform sandals it might not be quite so appropriate, but honestly I wouldn't even think twice about your dress and the way you wear it. I have similar ones, I'm well into my 40s and I don't think I look mutton. I'm pretty sure I don't.

LitteStarShine · 28/11/2019 11:34

*strappy not scrappy!

SpiderCharlotte · 28/11/2019 11:46

1. You look amazing. and 2. God, what is the need for people to be so bitchy??

Agree on both counts.

I really hate when people cry 'oh you're just jealous' when someone offers an alternative opinion on here but some of these replies just smack of the little green monster in their tone and faux shock. Grin

SpiderCharlotte · 28/11/2019 12:04

This is Holly's dress on Insta. Similar length to the OPs and I don't think it's too short at all with the tights and boots. Given that it's the length the OP asked about and not the style of the dress which, of course, won't be to everyone's taste.
