For a bit of nostalgia! I’ll kick things off..

  • Hard Candy makeup and nail polish. I had a quad of eyeshadows in purples and golds, thought it was the shit!
  • hair mascaras. Wtf were they about. Made your hair look like a gunky stringy mess
  • body shop dewberry body spray, which was the thing at our school, along with
  • wearing boy’s Lynx deodorant (I still recall which boys I fancied wore Tempest!)
  • heather shimmer lipstick, obviously
  • Rouge Noir nail polish, which everyone thought was the shit cos of Pulp Fiction, but it turned out to not even be the one that Uma Thurman wore)

Hit me with your memories!

Salon Selectives shampoo and conditioner, smelled totally lush, loved that and Dewberry or Mango perfume oil from the body shop, scandalous that they stopped doing them and all the other fragrances. I also remember Bourjois lipstick which had a scent to them, don't think they do that anymore either.

tobee · 18/11/2019 20:01

Some of these have very unfortunate names.

Copperknockers?
Intimate Scent?

Or is it just me?

tobee · 18/11/2019 20:03

Omg! Kissing potion! I was very hopeful that would work for me!

tobee · 18/11/2019 20:09

Bergasol smelt beautiful too! Do you remember the ad with the pastier women next to the bronze sunbather? Back in the days when a big tan was considered a good thing?

NecklessMumster · 18/11/2019 20:19

tobee Yes! I used to gaze at that picture for ages

CaptainWentworth · 18/11/2019 20:22

Does anyone remember a mail order catalogue in the mid- late 90s that sold all kinds of exotic (to teenage me!) ‘cult’ make up and beauty brands? Like Agnes b, Sweet Georgia Brown, Face Stockholm etc. I don’t think I could ever afford to buy anything from it but I loved looking at the brochures! I cannot for the life of me remember what it was called though.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 18/11/2019 20:27

I remember boots 17 Bon Bon lipstick and I think there was also a shade called Honey Frost that we thought suited everyone at school, I picked it up when I was in my 20's and it looks bloody awful on me :p.

Do you remember all the really dramatic adverts for hair wax/putty/gel? Brand name escapes me now.

I used to wear either Jasmine or Vanilla perfume from the body shop, I once dropped a bottle of Jasmine on my bedroom floor and my god the smell wouldn't go for ages.

Also a black lipstick from the Miss Selfridge make up range, I remember thinking the packaging was dead posh as I mostly had collection 2000 before then.

Remember the Rimmel roll on clear lip glosses and blushers.

Weird flavours like cherry mint I think in a maroon tube

ReggieLedoux · 18/11/2019 21:09

Not read the whole thread but...

Yves Rocher

think it was catalogue based but it was nice, very herbal based products (supposedly French...probably weren’t though)

NecklessMumster · 18/11/2019 21:46

Reggie I used to order Yves Rocher, they did an introductory offer where you could have loads of stuff, I used to do it every so often then cancel membership. And it was French.

Butterymuffin · 18/11/2019 21:46

Have just remembered the Boots Bon Bon lipstick - was it 17 or No 7? I'd buy that again like a shot.

VO5 hot oil tubes (never did nowt), Salon Selectives (can hear the ad now)

Anyone remember when hair gel came in clear tubs so you could see it was clear pink or blue, the colours of dentists' mouth wash? Just trying to remember the brand.

I wore Impulse in the matt purple can which I also can't remember the name of, but may have been Inspiration? Late 80s? I've looked for an image but no such luck.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 18/11/2019 21:54

I was a fuzzy peach perfume oil and Rimmel Black Cherry lipstick girl...

ReggieLedoux · 18/11/2019 21:57

@NecklessMumster

Yes.!! ...it’s gradually coming back to me now, you had to join up and commit (like those book clubs ) didn’t you ? so you got loads of goodies for joining up but had to order so much a month ?
Yes it indeed is French I just googled it and you can still buy it but it is a lot ore expensive that I remember !

@Butterymuffin

Was that ‘studio line’ hair gel?

CandyflossKid · 18/11/2019 22:39

Boots 'Country Born' hair mousse - made my hair feel like cardboard especially when I'd dried it with the diffuser!

TheCanterburyWhales · 19/11/2019 06:13

Yves Rocher was s stalwart on the Christmas bargains thread until they pulled out of the UK a couple of years ago. A website that looked like it had been designed in 1981 on somebody's Atari (so very fitting for this thread) but amazing bargains. (first thing in your basket free, even if it was a £50 perfume and the second thing was a £2 shower gel etc)

bimbimbap · 19/11/2019 07:48

sorry if someone has already mentioned this, but mightn’t it save the body shop if they brought back their 90s products? there’s clearly a HUGE market for them!

flopsytheflatcat · 19/11/2019 07:59

Impulse Gypsy !!! The BEST!

nakedavengeragain · 19/11/2019 08:11

@bimbimbap they did! They brought back some old favourites. Cucumber cleanser, banana shampoo, strawberry shower gel and my very favourite passionfruit cleansing g. They brought them back as a limited edition about 5 years ago and then they disappeared.
The last and only things I've bought from the Body Shop since 1990.
Ive half an inch of passionfruit gel lurking in a cupboard as I can't bear to never smell it again!!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/11/2019 08:20

It's been mentioned upthread but Body Shop Raspberry Ripple bath/shower .
It was sharp , not like the strawberry bubbles that are hovering round now , that smell like milkshake (at best)

There was also (cannot remember the names though)

A shampoo that had wheat or wheatgerm
A shampoo with a brown bottle and a yellow hexagonal lid ( possibly honey based)
A shampoo range Jilly Cooper did a magazine advert for "I stopped believing in secret ingredients when I was 14 and my lacross socks fell out of bra"

And yes , I remember the Nicky Clark Hairomatherapy range , metal silver cannister and a rounded lid .

OMGshefoundmeout · 19/11/2019 11:17

In the late 70s/early 80s Body Shop did a carrot moisturiser. I bought it and after a few days I realised it was turning my face orange. I am normally a blueish shade of white so it was very noticeable. Not surprisingly it was soon discontinued. It was an early and unintentional version of a gradual tan.

youngestisapsycho · 19/11/2019 11:58

My DD just got a tube of carrot mosturiser in her Body shop advent calendar!

OMGshefoundmeout · 19/11/2019 14:05

@youngestisapsycho - hopefully technology has improved procedures since I was at school and the new version will not make your youngest lookmas if she has been tangoed. Although quite a lot of youngsters seem to favour an orange glow now.

Sgtmajormummy · 19/11/2019 14:50

I had this frosted eyeshadow paintbox palette and another of lipglosses from M&S when I started experimenting with makeup. Thought I was the bee’s knees.

And later in the 80s I had a very slim set of powders and brushes that clipped into my Filofax! Grin

nakedavengeragain · 19/11/2019 15:51

@Sgtmajormummy ooh! I had that! I also had a lipgloss one too!

MikeUniformMike · 19/11/2019 17:20

There was a flat M&S blusher tin. I think we all had it in the early 80s.
I remember the orangey blusher in it.
