For a bit of nostalgia! I’ll kick things off..

  • Hard Candy makeup and nail polish. I had a quad of eyeshadows in purples and golds, thought it was the shit!
  • hair mascaras. Wtf were they about. Made your hair look like a gunky stringy mess
  • body shop dewberry body spray, which was the thing at our school, along with
  • wearing boy’s Lynx deodorant (I still recall which boys I fancied wore Tempest!)
  • heather shimmer lipstick, obviously
  • Rouge Noir nail polish, which everyone thought was the shit cos of Pulp Fiction, but it turned out to not even be the one that Uma Thurman wore)

Hit me with your memories!

IIRC, Prescriptives and Clinique were part of the Estee Lauder group.
I liked Calyx.

bellalou1234 · 18/11/2019 13:58

Hint of a tint. I used to think using that would make my mouse hair gorgeous blonde. Still waiting

bathshebaeverbusy · 18/11/2019 14:02

In about 1980 I had some talc in a brown tube with pink and orange patterns on it. It smelled divine. I think, but am not sure, it was French Almond. Can't remember the make but I've looked for it ever since. Same era as Boots' 'An Original Formula' stuff and awful KiKU (cat pee) in the yellow packaging.

fedup21 · 18/11/2019 14:08

It’s not that, is it, @bathsheba?

Oh my goodness! That it it! Heavenly. I got it for my 11th birthday!

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 18/11/2019 14:12

Perfumes - I started with Elizabeth Arden Blue Grass (you could get matching talc in a turquoise concertina-shaped thing), moved onto Helena Rubinstein Apple Blossom, then Balmain Vent Vert, Guerlain Shalimar, Hermes Caleche, Margaretha Ley Escada and then settled for Chanel No. 5. Of all those which are discontinued, I wish I could get Escada again!

Shampoos - Protein 21, Revlon Flex as others have said, Vidal Sassoon in the brown bottle (gorgeous smell), Reban shampoo for greasy hair (didn't work!), Silvikrin and Sunsilk.

Boots Love make-up in the silver packaging and all very lemony!

Mary Quant nail polish in small square bottles.

Aah the memories!

Ratonastick · 18/11/2019 14:22

I love this. The Body Shop has a make up line in the early years (was it Barbara Daly?) and I still have some of their eyeshadow brushes. I wash them with baby shampoo every couple of weeks. They are completely indestructible and will give the cockroaches something to do their make up with after a nuclear winter.

Mind you, I still use St Ives Apricot scrub and Cremolia hand cream!

jcoc147 · 18/11/2019 14:24

To the op and others how have mentioned it Rimmel still sell coffee and heather shimmer lipsticks 😂. I bought one of each last week as it was my friends 40th birthday and I made a nostalgia box for her of lots of things from our misspent youth!

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 18/11/2019 14:28

Oh and Bergasol Sun Lotion - the only sun lotion which ever resulted in me getting a decent tan!

HowlsMovingBungalow · 18/11/2019 14:36

L'oreal Studio gel spray
Sun in bleaching spray
Bodyshop White Musk perfume oil
Lynx Oriental body spray (YUCK!)
Cover Girl cosmetics
Flex shampoo

thenightsky · 18/11/2019 16:30

Ratonastick Barbara Daly did a range for Tesco years ago. I too have all her brushes and eyelash combs still to this day.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 18/11/2019 16:36

@MilkTray you can get the Escada on e bay just checked

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/11/2019 16:48

Oh that was the lip-gloss in the tin Blythes Grin The lid slid along .

I have a Barbara Daly (from Tesco not Body Shop) jar of face primer . I got a small jar in a kit and bought the big one (half price) but not opened it yet .
I threw the small one out recently (it had been open at least two years and gone a bit manky )

There was all sorts in the magazines that Barbara Daly did Princess Diana's Wedding Make-up , but I don't know if that;'s true .

She'd have said you might want to run an iron over that frock love , before you set off Grin

Tommy Hilfiger - Tommy Girl perfume is the smell of a very intense one sided love affair i had/imagined with a boy who wasnt quite as into me as I was into him. He bought me a bottle of that. Broke my heart. Sob.

Boots candy floss lip balm was in my.christmas stocking when i was about 13. Lasted for years as it was such an overpowering smell. Loved it.

Body shop.elderflower eye gel and Apple perfume were my favourites.

Always wanted Hard Candy nail polish!

Loved anything glittery by Barry M. Especially the bright blue glittery eye shadow I coated my eyes with. I wore it with silver lipstick. Looked alarming. Loved it.

Loopytiles · 18/11/2019 16:54

Ah, Body Shop of yore.

Several friends used henna and their hair looked good, but their parents’ bathrooms and towels suffered!

dontalltalkatonce · 18/11/2019 16:55

Laura Mercier Just Lips lippy. The best.

Loopytiles · 18/11/2019 16:55

DH started using Herbal Essences shampoo as a teen because of the orgasmic woman in the ad (!) and continued to use it until they recently changed the formula.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/11/2019 17:15

I used to love BodyShop Extra Red Henna - my hair looked amazing, long , glossy , red/auburn tones .
Bathroom looked like an abbatoir Blush

I used to love the BodyShop Sugaring with the washable cotton strips . I use the Nads Sugaring now but I see Superdrugs do one which may be investigated ....

HeyLala · 18/11/2019 17:20

First perfume was Peach from Avon.
Loved Dewberry too.
Used Ponds cold cream as a make up remover.
Still have my set of Prescriptives make up brushes.
Used Sun in - arghhh

But also, did anyone buy the small brown glass pots of Coconut oil from Superdrug to use as a sun tan lotion?
What was I thinking?

Darklane · 18/11/2019 17:42

Am I the only one that thinks even the cheaper scents of long ago smelt much nicer than some of the modern ones they churn out every year these days?

Camay & Lux soaps
And the brown see through Pears one
Max Factor shadow cream
Goya Entice perfume
The portable hairdryers with blow up hoods

MilkTray I loved Boots' Love Lemon! Frosted bottle and pure lemon smell!

BiBiBirdie · 18/11/2019 18:56

Although in defence of how Body shop has now gone downhill- they used to have a make up range in the nineties. I was allowed to own some of it, as it was good for sensitive skin.
Only problem was, the foundation. It was so thick if you smiled too hard you were half convinced it would crack Grin
It was very chalky and matte too. Bloody awful!
I do think a lot of shops from my youth are awful now though. Top Shop used to be really cheap, and Miss Selfridge was affordable too. I couldn't believe the prices in there the other day when DD wanted to go in.
Times have changed, even the names they all call each other are way off from what we referred to ourselves. VSCO girls remind me of girly girls who were into Clueless, there is such a thing as a "pastel Goth" (basically an indie kid). All very strange.

MikeUniformMike · 18/11/2019 18:58

Does anyone rmember Les Createurs de Beaute? Mail order cosmetics.

TheCanterburyWhales · 18/11/2019 19:04

Milktray- you can still get all of the perfumes you mentioned, I have all of them except the Escada. The only thing is, they've all been reformulated due to EU regulations on irritants.
If you want the originals (and that goes for any perfume) you'll find them on eBay but research the bottles first. A lot of sellers will call it vintage when it's not (eg if you want original Obsession you need gold trim on the cap etc)
Those multi boxes of miniatures you find at airports are great to pick up vintage scents on ebay- for example I have a pretty but definitely new bottle of Fidji but also a miniature in one of those boxes which IS original vintage and knocks socks off the new.

Bergasol was also the only suncream that I got a tan with- obviously that's because it contained bergamot oil which made your skin more susceptible to the sun. So it got banned!

bohemia14 · 18/11/2019 19:04

I also used to love the lip glosses - I think they were Maybelline - in glass bottles with a roll on type top. All sorts of flavours like bubblegum, chocolate etc. We weren't allowed make up at school but we got through a lot of that lipgloss!
