red I always went to dehillerin, the cookware shop in Paris if you are into that kind of thing. We spent a month travelling with a copper pot from there in our suitcases once, I love looking at the moulds and tins.

I’m in Melbourne so no fires although covered in smoke from them. It’s pretty grim.

Skint is pretty temporary, and it’s because we have bought a house which will be great (in a decade when we demolish it anyway), plus I do have a couple of jobs really to choose from. It’s probably good for me though! I’ll check out depop though, hadn’t realised they are Aussie. Very odd that I suddenly look Aussie Grin

I’ve had a snoop up thread and some lovely harmony trousers, I’d not heard of them. Also liked very much the dudette styles. So laidback and insouciant (although I do always try and decide how much people dressed like that have actually angsted over the outfit choice)

RE Ski fashion, I just got back from Switzerland where I worried I might look a bit ‘poor relation’ in my £110 Dare2b jacket and salopettes ensemble but it was fine. The Curator jacket, I think - it has nice stretchy panels to minimise resemblance to a sack of potatoes, and I bought it in the black to enable wearing in ‘real life.’ I’ve always had bright or wacky printed ski jackets before and I was surprised how much better I felt in all black that actually fitted nicely (even if the skiing wasn’t much improved).

RE Raglans - I have a gorgeous sweater I made to the Blank Canvas pattern by Ysolda Teague which has a raglan/ saddle shoulder blend of shoulder shaping and it’s a great line. She designs really well for the female form.

Redandblue11 If it's of any interest, Sephora in Paris will give you a free 15 minute makeover in return for absolutely nothing. The make-up artists work during peak hours, so not early in the morning or late at night (but all day on Saturday). At the little branch on Rue Commerce (15e, not far from Tour Eiffel) there is a man who is especially good; he is the only male make-up artist who works there but I've forgotten his name.

Also Sephora has a good sale on at the moment with some good discounts especially on face, hand, hair, etc. masks and all of the Christmas gift boxes, and the Christmas palettes etc. and novelty-ish gifts are super super cheap.

Redandblue11 · 17/01/2020 07:00

Thank you for Paris info all, ready to go now. I will update on my return. Smile

banivani · 17/01/2020 10:03

Vienne Even though I know that skiing is a very material sport, I've been surprised when we've gone (granted, not to flashy resorts in the Aaaaalps) how relaxed the atmosphere is sartorially. The main focus is after all how you ski, in the end that's what brings you cred. Personally, as an overthinker, I think you have to "earn" the flashy wear by being really good (goes for all sports). I mean you look more ridiculous in super high techy running tights when you can only manage a 100 m stumble. Surely.

botemp · 17/01/2020 11:21

Red, enjoy yourselves but keep informed, the yellow vests are at it again today in the Marais/Bastille area. Think they've been peaceful so far but it could change without much notice.

IME ski resorts in the southern Alps -Switzerland and Italy- are quite glam (as far as you can be glam and skiing). I tend not to bother as I just don't see much sense in paying out for gear (which the die hard enthusiasts will scoff at no matter what after which they inform you what you should have bought) when we only ski rarely. My hair instantly goes in super frizz mode along with overly sensitised red skin anyhow. Åre was much nicer on my skin and hair last year though, potentially because I'd already 'acclimated' in Stockholm? I've narrowed down it's all about the jumper game in social settings anyhow, and I have good jumper game. I'd be tempted to get a really good quality fair isle or similar if we were to go skiing again.

My husband once went skiing with students from the school he worked at (school trip). We had no money at the time, only his income really and it was low. The students were largely from families with money. The only suitable jacket we had at home was some horrible old late 80s/early 90s yoke, think the snowboarding dudes from Cliffhanger but worse. All the young ones sniggered at him and looked down their noses - but then he skiied like a god (he's quite good) and they ate their words and begged him for tips. 'Twas like a film.

viennesewhirls · 17/01/2020 19:29

In my experience it’s more about the resort than the country. I’ve been to a few flashy French resorts where there’s been fur everywhere and lots of Russians dripping in diamonds, and I’ve been to Swiss resorts where it’s mostly good-quality kit but often not brand new. There are definitely flashy Swiss resorts too, I just can’t afford to go to them!

Chochito · 17/01/2020 19:45

I haven't read the full thread so I don't know whether this brand, Faguo has been mentioned already. It is more of a menswear brand but does have shoes, clothes, and accessories specifically for women, and their unisex accessories are beautiful, like the weekend bags, backpacks, and laptop cases. They also plant a tree for every item sold.

The stuff is great quality and I receive many compliments whenever I am wearing something from this brand! You can buy online, of course, but if you are near one of the Faguo stores (in France) I recommend popping in as the service is amazing, they have such friendly and helpful staff.

Chochito · 17/01/2020 19:46

P.S. Not my company, and don't work for them! Just a happy customer who's excited to find something a bit less cookiecutter, and good quality, at a very reasonable price.

banivani · 19/01/2020 09:33

Chochito quite like some of the wallets and so on there - not really for myself the way I am now but I can see the appeal. Not a bad thing to keep an eye on.

Was watching YouTube videos and came across this one

“The different kinds of scarves” amused me and I thought of the thread Grin

The comedian has very ill-fitting shirts. Annoys me!

botemp · 19/01/2020 09:51

I'll watch the video in a bit. Faguo is new to me but it looks nice, reminds me a bit of Loreak Median.

Ahem, against my better judgement I bought the Chloé knee high boots Blush they were on a steep discount and my heart overruled my head for a change. I'll figure something out to keep them fitting at the ankle somehow, I'm sure and I can still return them if not.

I'm now on the lookout for winter culottes/long bermudas to wear with them. Annoyingly something Hedi Slimane seems to be pushing on the runways, as well as my hair when it's pouring out and I'm without hood/umbrella Confused I'm not hopeful as I tried two at Cos and they were an awful fit. Ordered the third pic from Arket but I don't have a good fit record with Arket either. I've seen a potential pair at Massimo Dutti but that is sold out in my size.

I'm also on the lookout for some wool shorts, I know they're deeply unfashionable now so probably impossible to find but I was wearing a skirt (with my new Ami jumper, hat is not mine) which sort of folds diagonally over and appears like a short from the front but it's a rather crap skirt that rides up continually.

Also spotted this dress at &Other Stories, which has very strong Issey Miyake pleats please vibes, can't find it online (there are two other fine pleated ones but they're not as nice). Wrap around dresses don't usually suit me, but it would make a great one for someone that does suit that shape, particularly like the generous belt and sleeves and details.

Random question because I also spotted it yesterday, anyone have the Dishoom cookbook by any chance?

I've just seen the video and now desperately want a Chanel boomerang Blush and am annoyed he missed out the cache couer when mentioning all the scarf names. I should probably name change to BoPretentious...

Agree, ill fitting shirt for his shape, he has those exaggerated high sloping shoulders that just don't go in a slim fit shirt unless it's made to measure (and then it still looks odd).

OP posts:
banivani · 20/01/2020 09:00

A Chanel boomerang is the DUMBEST thing I've ever heard of. I had to google it and it is real. (Looks shiny and "well-made", I'll grant that.)

Bo, you are trying to make knickerbockers happen. It's all very 2000s (am vague, can't remember when they were last a thing).

botemp · 20/01/2020 09:42

I know but that's what's so brilliant about it, it's Karl Lagerfeld humour at its best. He knew how ridiculous his customer base was and how easily they're seduced into buying a black shiny turd so long as it had a CC logo on it so they could show it off on Instagram. It's conceptual art at a bargain price, I tell ya.

Potentially yes, wasn't it the same era as the Vivienne Westwood pirate boots? That was early to mid 2000s I think. Anyhow, if I don't make it happen the menz will try to revive it first since they've all gone very fashion, so needs must and all that.

OP posts:
Floisme · 20/01/2020 09:50

Ha ha I had to google Chanel Boomerang too - I thought at first it was the name of a stupid bag or something. What a set of plonkers. I love it that you want one though bo Grin

Not a massive knickerbocker fan either but this is from someone who's been lusting over glittery trousers (no I haven't bought any yet) so maybe that won't carry much weight. But I do like proper 70 culottes with knee length boots. I'm back in mine (boots not culottes) and cant believe I left them in the cupboard for so long.

Forgot to mention I'm doing no make-up January again. Last year I pinpointed foundation as the main problem but I don't think it was the only one - I'm not happy with my eye make up either and I increasingly dislike the faff of applying it. This time I'm also going to re-introduce things a lot more slowly to give myself more space to see what works and what doesn't. It's a bit more challenging this year as there are more social and work events (whereas last January was very quiet). But I've only lost my nerve once and that was on New Year's Day so I've let myself.

Floisme · 20/01/2020 09:51

off.

botemp · 20/01/2020 10:03

Yes, I'm looking for culottes rather than knickerbockers but culottes seem to be longer these days, on me they're almost full length trousers. I distinctly remember in their hay day they were more 3/4 length, and subsequently more difficult to pull off. I remember there was a whole article about them being only for the likes of Victoria Beckham to show off how ridiculously thin she was as everyone else looked a disaster in them, so this probably a really foolish exercise on my part.

I have been unintentionally doing make up free days, I seem to like myself without it better some days. I have decided to book in an eyelash lift thinking that'll facilitate that even more. Am undecided, however, whether to get them tinted as well (a few euros extra) as my eyelashes are already dark but promises of tint and lift apparently result in no need for mascara. Was it Maxima that gets a lift done regularly, do you tint as well?

Really like that other stories dress, might try it if is in the store near work.
Will catch up properly later but my Paris trip was great, loads of wondering and seeing great stuff in some areas I hadn’t walk before.
Stayed in the left bank all the time and was fine, the Saturday there were some big protests but as long you avoided certain areas and didn’t use public transport was all good.
Got a maison Pere dress (photo) and a Rixo skirt at LBM. Both heavily reduced. Checked online and the price of paid online was more than half of the reduced price online.

Just watched the YouTube video Grin love it.

Floisme · 20/01/2020 12:59

As I remember, culottes in the 70s were much shorter - just below the knee and also known as 'divided skirts'. I can still picture Linda McCartney in some. I didn't wear them myself as I was too busy appropriating Victorian mill workers (long skirt, shawl and clogs).

I thought of you when I saw that Other Stories dress Red. Paris sounds great - looking forward to hearing more.

Chochito · 20/01/2020 15:48

Redandblue11 Glad you had a great trip. Rive gauche is the best! Really like your Maison Père dress.

Redandblue11 · 20/01/2020 18:05

Those chloe boots were really nice Bo. I love short culottes/Bermudas type thing, I used to have a really nice pair years ago.

In Paris we stumbled with a big exhibition/outdoor installation in the grounds of the musee historie naturale (spelling probably all wrong), lit big marine lit up creatures, Madrid some fabric, very impressive and colourful. The sunny winter day helped with the dramatic views. Stunning.
I also liked people watching, a lot of the usual understated Parisian look around. Also in the evening as we went to some hidden cocktail bar, so none of the heavy makeup or skimpy dressing. Some well cut blazers with a silk blouse underneath, particularly remember this girl (lot younger than me) with a red silk blouse and blazer at the back of neck a loosely tied bow.
Also had my share of celeb spotting!
We were sat in a famous cafe right next to Charlotte Rampling and then I had Sir Ian Mckellen having a chat with a lady next to me, the first thing to recognise in his case was his grand voice.

The dress I got I tried it opened at the front and with a belt and what I liked is that worn like that has a very different vibe than worn as the model , which I also like btw.
