bo, I think it's more the colour of the cardigan, it looks more saturated in the photo but can look a bit meh. I think the key is to wear it with darker colours, so the colour somehow looks richer. I don't mind the hem too much, I mostly wear it buttoned so it looks quite fitted. It's a classic/traditional style, I suppose, so I tend to offset it with something less so, like the assymmetric trousers or my faux leather, quilted skirt.

I read some excerpts from the "Older but better", interesting, but not enough for me to buy it and I probably am who it's aimed at.

Ski and no children! I would be very excited too Maxima!
Last week I had in my town (Hertfordshire) a ski sale/samples that came for the weekend and had very good downs in your price. I know they go around and this week they might be either in St Albans or harpenden (30 min from central London)
But maybe do a search for ski sample sale in your area?
Mine is Patagonia, I rate it highly however you might be looking for a not so functional look?
Mine is fitted tough and imo looks good.
In the sales I think they might be just above your price range
Have a look in
snow rock

Are you by any chance taking any pre lessons in the Hemel Hempstead indoor ski? They have a snow rock shop there and in the sale I expect you will find something. They have from the very sporty brands to high end fashion for apres.

The ring picture, as threatened.

maxima I bought a YSE bikini in the end (and the Eres swimsuit) quality is nice, but I don’t know about torso length. Seafolly is another good option. Solid construction and the length works for me albeit that I’m not especially long in the torso.

I saw a max mara down coat on a second hand site if that’s of interest maxim Also saw a nice down option in Uniqlo. I’d love to be going skiing l. I haven’t done since kids. Enjoy!

Love the ring xing looks simultaneously old and modern.

Quirky love the fabric of the trousers. Nice buy.

Very pretty ring Xing. Can’t remember the story behind it though? Abject apologies. Please repeat.

Redandblue11 · 12/01/2020 13:13

That is a sweet ring.
tell us Bani when you wear your trousers, we want to see photos Smile

banivani · 12/01/2020 13:18

Oh I wore them to work! No compliments. We smashed the big mirror here so I can’t take pictures any more 🙄 and I’m too afraid to do it at work - making a holy show of myself !😬

XingMing · 12/01/2020 13:29

It was a bargain Bani, although an extravagant one. I saw it and chatted with the dealer, then went away to think about it. In the meantime, the dealer also thought about it, and raised the price 50%! She let me have it at first price though.

Floisme · 12/01/2020 14:05

That ring is lovely Xing. I've been meaning to ask, did you ever find something to pep up your wardrobe or are you still looking?

Thanks for the jeans tip bo. Once pay day is here I'll sort out a shortlist. I must say I've managed the last 5 weeks quite happily with 2 pairs and, if they were just a better fit, I might not bother buying any more just yet.

I'm currently obsessing over a woman I spotted in the coffee shop wearing glittery wide leg, floaty trousers with a turtle neck T shirt and Dr Martens. My head keeps telling me I don't suit black or high necklines and that sparkly trousers would do my arse no favours whatsoever, but it just looked so much more modern than my default of jeans with a sparkly jumper.

XingMing · 12/01/2020 14:28

I've bought a few necessary fillers-in recently, Flo, though nothing as exciting as glittery trousers! A thicker pair of off-black jeans bought locally, which I am wearing a lot, plus two Henley T shirts from the Me&Em sale in black marl, which will be useful although they have slightly puffed sleeves for which I have a completely irrational distaste, but as Uniqlo no longer make my favourites, needs must. The colour and fabric are lovely, so I will make do with them. Having gone off black for several years, it's speaking to me again and as I get whiter, it works again -- as long as I use blusher, or lipstick.

The ring was a rash impulse; who needs a ring? But it's rare that my taste in jewellery and my pocket agree on anything, so I'll enjoy it, and if I'm on my beam-ends, it can be sold again.

Floisme · 12/01/2020 14:39

I've started dabbling with black again too - just the washed out shade so far.

I probably won't really venture into glittery trousers but they just looked so cool with a black turtle neck - like Glam Rock meeting Juliette Greco.

quirkychick · 13/01/2020 07:44

Lovely ring, xing. I agree with Elle, it looks both vintage and modern. A great find and the fact you went back for it shows how much you like it.

flo, Arket have some wide glittery trousers in their sale. I was looking at slim trousers, actually as my last pair of skinny/slim navy trousers have died.

Redandblue11 · 14/01/2020 09:08

I was thinking Bani that you said you wore your lovely trousers for work and received no compliments.
I have noticed that sometimes with certain clothes I like I don’t get anyone making any comment, but I somehow love it.
Is interesting the perception some clothes give to others and to yourself.

Redandblue11 · 14/01/2020 09:13

I am imagining this woman in wide leg glittery trousers!

When I was 19 one of my aunts gave me her green velvet 70’s trousers. They used to fit me great and I used to love wearing them for going out dancing (clubbing) or when there was a very arty event (ex in a band). I still have them, feeling like sigh them up and trying to try them .. just for fun, unlikely I will get away with them nowadays.

ToEllewithIt · 14/01/2020 09:46

I love the sound of that glittery trouser outfit. I wouldn't pull it off in a fit, but on the right person....

The Sunday Times Style section had an article on sustainable denim I'll try to photograph it late. Sezane are pushing their eco denim, but I haven't read the blurb, so I don't know what exactly that entails.

I have a Wisner emerald green coat staring as me from the sidebar. The targeted advertising knows us well......

banivani · 14/01/2020 12:14

I am - no surprises - WILDLY in favour of wide sparkly trousers. IMO sparkly trousers > sparkly top. Flo - wide sparkle trousers, and a high boatneck top? What do you think?

Red - a compliment has arrived. Grin But I agree with you otherwise. Also, the more non-mainstream you dress the less people will complement you obv - they don't know what to say haha. In fact, the one I got was that the trousers were "mysiga" ie "hygge" to speak a language you understand. The fabric of them was cozy (it is). Try on the green velvet ad let us know how you feel in them now!

Atm the sidebar is showing me padded insert soles for my flat feet. Grin

Floisme · 14/01/2020 18:28

Thank you all for the glittery trousers support. Also bani a high boatneck could be just the ticket if I can find one.

Anyway I spent my lunchtime trying on some half price Whistles black sparkly trousers with a chunky men's cardigan (not planned, just what I was wearing). The results were not displeasing but I held back cos a) I've still got no money and b) even if I did, I'm supposed to be supporting independent shops (although I do have some vouchers....) and c) they were in a kind of stretchy, knitted fabric and I was worried that after a couple of washes, floaty would turn to droopy.

Also I'm not sure if I literally want glittery trousers or whether they just represent something I'm hankering after e.g. a touch of unpredictability and / or glamour. So I'm going to have a good rummage first in case I've got something already that would do the trick.

addle · 14/01/2020 18:50

I mostly lurk and enjoy but just wanted to direct Elle to Muji pyjamas which seem v lovely and plain.

ToEllewithIt · 14/01/2020 20:26

Thanks Addle. I’ll take look.

timeisnotaline · 15/01/2020 02:49

I haven’t read the full thread as have been very awol. I do have muji pjs, bought for being plain shirt and trousers type in brushed organic cotton. I have noticed recently they are very short! Ie ankle length instead of near floor. I can’t decide if I didn’t notice this before or if they have gotten shorter. So might be worth trying on, as I’m not tall.
I’ve actually bought nothing in months except two scarves. One handy lightweight wool and one silk cashmere hand woven in a studio opposite where we were staying, I’m living out of suitcases at mum and dads and completely skint as we bought a house but I’m still job hunting. So no purchases anytime soon! But ever so slightly related to the glittery theme, my proudest fashion moment recently was not french- I had a cousins wedding and wore stilettos I haven’t worn in years, and danced all night in them. I think I look a bit wider in the photo than in real life, I actually really like that jumpsuit, but I have no good (in focus) photos from the night itself!
It’s quite warm in oz fairly often anyway to state the obvious (it’s also surprisingly chilly a lot) so I’m currently a bit sticky in a maje cotton lace top and a floaty red fathered pleated viscose skirt I love.

botemp · 15/01/2020 13:09

I was wondering how you were getting on in Oz time, lovely to 'see' you again. You somehow suddenly look very Australian in that picture. Skint in Australia sounds like a bummer though, I can recommend depop as I frequently find cheap things on there but then it turns out they're in Australia and it would cost more to ship than to buy the item, seems to be a very popular app there.

I was thinking that about Muji pjs too, my mother had some and she was 10cm shorter than me and they were pretty much a perfect length on her. Men's may be a bit longer?

I'm going to pass on glittery trousers, I did see a very impressive metallic brocade pair of trousers with a peacock feathers pattern that were embellished with sequins from Dries van Noten in Paris. Very impressive but I can't get away with busy bottoms in heavy fabrics.

WRT compliments, IME people that know you compliment boring shit that rarely warrants a compliment but fits in their comfort zone and are less ooh and ah over more out there items, unless it's really out there and there's occasion for it. Randoms on the street are the opposite. Lot of that, I suspect, is cultural though.

Redandblue11 · 15/01/2020 16:38

Well Bani how I feel in my old green velvet trousers... I would tell you if I could fit in them! Haha a good few cm separate the zip...
But here is a partial photo of my leg in it, I wouldn’t show you the upper part.
Still love them so they are back on their bag Smile

Redandblue11 · 15/01/2020 20:04

Bo what non fashion items do you recommend buying in Paris?

botemp · 15/01/2020 20:36

Ahem, how much word limit do I get on a MN post, Red Blush depends entirely about what you're into, I usually take back a fair bit of food. Pharmacy not so much as most can be ordered online and it's a lot of extra weight. There's usually at least one light hearted argument of how much time I'm able to waste in Sephora Blush If I'm not traveling by train or plane I'd probably stuff a car (but preferably a van) full of furniture and miscellaneous homewear.

banivani · 15/01/2020 20:56

Nice to see you again, Time, glad you're all alright - feels like the whole country is burning. You look great! :D

Red - how rude of your trousers! ;)
