Do we not think that PM looks a bit Hallowe'eny in that gown? In another colour it would have been fabulous but it looks to me as though she made it herself out of bin bags and tissue paper.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 27/10/2019 16:33

Knees together, shoulders back & chin up - ridiculous Grin @thisenglishlife

Laiste · 27/10/2019 16:36

Myimaginaryfamiliarhasfleas i agree Grin

Is it me or do we not see the RF in fully black evening gowns very often these days?

And - i'm thinking i've said that before on one of these threads! I'm getting deja vu.

SenecaFalls · 27/10/2019 16:39

Not wearing black except for funerals is supposed to be one of the oft-touted "rules" they are supposed to follow.

Blingandrings · 27/10/2019 16:48

Diana was not supposed to have worn a black evening dress on her first formal engagement with Charles. He told her black was for funerals. Yet the Queen clearly wore black! It's as well to remember that in the fifties and sixties everyone dressed up a lot more and evening dress was much more common than it is now.

TSSDNCOP · 27/10/2019 16:51

I think that dress you’re referring to raised eyebrows less for it’s colour and more for the fact she was bursting out the top. It was pure Jilly Cooper heroine.

TSSDNCOP · 27/10/2019 16:53

Definitely Jillyesque

BeaCalm · 27/10/2019 16:56

Harry has his own personal fortune, as he inherited the bulk of Diana's twenty-one million divorce settlement

Didn't 40% go to HMRC in inheritance tax? I seem to remember the Inland Revenue was going to do a deal to return the whole £17 million to Charles until the Press got wind of it.

Blingandrings · 27/10/2019 17:00

It was the colour too though, she said so herself.

Horsemad · 27/10/2019 17:02

I adored 'that' Diana dress... Appropriate or not. Smile

QueenOfTheAndals · 27/10/2019 17:16

Kate wore a stunning black velvet strapless number either just before or just after her wedding. Alas she's never reworn that particular dress.

Kate has worn black a few time the black strapless McQueen dress is one of her better looks for sure seems to have got tossed on the pile of not appropriate for a duchess unfortunately

I do love those low chignons on Kate. They really suit her and I think will be a classic style for her as she grows older.

Myimaginaryfamiliarhasfleas · 27/10/2019 17:46

In the interests of fairness, Meghan suits a bun too! 😉

MotherofPearl · 27/10/2019 19:10

Two more black dresses the DoC has worn - I think she looks great in both of these and the others already posted.

Meghan has worn black dresses too.

I've very much enjoyed reading the comments on this thread today. Very informative and thought provoking. Thank you ladies!

I know it's not all black but Meghans black and white Oscar de la renta butterflies gown is probably still my favourite of her formal looks.

But yes I agree with the principal a lot of the rules like black only to funerals are absolute rubbish!

When do we reckon we will next be seeing everyone? Obviously it's coming up to Remembrance Sunday so I expect everyone will be present for that but anyone know of any events before that?

Laiste · 27/10/2019 19:49

Ooh, more all black dresses than i thought! Thank you. They're always striking. The strapless one on Kate is my favorite. She looks stunning.

I can't believe we're nearly round to Remembrance Sunday again!

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 27/10/2019 19:51

I'm obviously old fashioned but I don't like seeing the royal family in strapless dresses. Just don't seem very elegant to me!

itswinetime · 27/10/2019 19:59

I don't know the queen rocked some very elegant strapless gowns in her youth. And not just in the crown! Wink

I agree with everything @whatsmypassword says.

I also think harry and Meghan's big pr mistakrnid to try and appear "reasonable". As a result they get a lot of incorrect interpretation. They need to dumb down their message as then bang on and on about it. Ie , we accept scrutiny but will not accept outright lies" over and over again in a million different ways. Because ultimately, that's the key issue. Kate got made fun of for her uncle, mothers career etc. But meghan gets attacked for things that just arent true.

QueenOfTheAndals · 27/10/2019 20:04

@itswinetime No engagements have been announced for either Duchess so yes, I'm guessing it'll be Remembrance Sunday before we see them again. It'll also be the first time in a while that William, Kate, Harry and Meghan have all been at the same event. HM will be there too so it'll have to beat best behaviour all around!

BlingLoving · 27/10/2019 20:04

Oh, and people.saying harry and meghan couldn't survive without state funds make me laugh. Do you have any idea how privately wealthy the entire royal family is? Land, art, jewels plus the best and smartest investment professionals looking after their wealth. It's hilarious you think they might struggle. Sure, they might not be able to justify living at frogmore cottage (although I seem to recall the queen has right to hand it off, even if modernisation shouldn't be paid by state), but believe me, they'd be just fine.

QueenOfTheAndals · 27/10/2019 20:06

The black one-shoulder gown is one of Meghan's best formal looks. Everything about it was perfect - the dress, the jewellery, the hair and makeup, the dark manicure. She looked amazing. Not so keen on the black Lion King gown - she should've sized up around the bust.

Loving the black dresses. It’s refreshing to see them in them as they wear colours so frequently. I’m pretty sure the no black thing is a myth it is, like anything, occasion specific.
