I did wonder if after the royal tours they would take a bit of a break and I guess the Cambridge's are on half term which Kate tends to keep free if I remember correctly.

SenecaFalls · 27/10/2019 20:38

I'm obviously old fashioned but I don't like seeing the royal family in strapless dresses. Just don't seem very elegant to me!

I think you'd have to go back pretty far to see strapless as new-fangled fashion. I think the 1950s was when strapless evening dresses first became very fashionable (as in pictures above).

Disfordarkchocolate · 27/10/2019 20:54

If I had the lovely shoulders and arms of Catherine or Meghan I'd happily go strapless.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 27/10/2019 21:03

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strapless_dress

Strapless dress invented in 1930’s

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 27/10/2019 21:11

Maybe old fashioned is the wrong word then, but I just don't find strapless dresses as elegant or particularly nice to look at. The ones of the Queen with the sash over one shoulder or even one sided are nice, but I don't like completely strapless at all.

AppleKatie · 27/10/2019 21:47

I’ve only ever encountered strapless hate on MN.

Those pictures of HM are testament to how elegant and gorgeous the look can be.

Although, of course, like anything it can look shit on the wrong person.

RomaineCalm · 27/10/2019 21:54

I do like Kate in the black dresses, particularly the strapless one and my personal opinion is that she could be far more 'daring' with her evening wear and could definitely pull it off.

And yes, itswinetime that OdlR butterfly dress is beautiful on Meghan.

ElspethFlashman · 27/10/2019 21:57

That ruby and diamond set that Kate is wearing in the first photo is the one and only time she's worn it.

It's presumed to be a wedding gift. It's a commercial piece, I think someone found it listed online. Hold on, I'll have a rummage.

ElspethFlashman · 27/10/2019 22:10

Yep, it's by Mouwad and includes a bracelet and was confirmed to be a wedding gift by a "friend" . Price not disclosed! 😂

SenecaFalls · 27/10/2019 22:14

I think the key to doing strapless right is all in the proportions. I think that sometimes designers get a bit OTT with the skirt because there is so much less variation that you can do with the bodice.

Myimaginaryfamiliarhasfleas · 27/10/2019 22:16

I think it's strapless bridal gowns that people object to. They can look cheap, especially on a fuller figure and without enough structure and support.

With really good boning and on a slighter frame strapless can look very elegant. You absolutely need a long slender neck though.

paradyning · 27/10/2019 22:26

Much £££ Elspeth I'm sure. I never liked those rubies. Too spikey for my taste.

SenecaFalls · 27/10/2019 22:30

So why Muz for Ms? I just find it very perplexing.

RomaineCalm · 27/10/2019 22:31

I do think it's the fit in general. I don't like them when they are constantly being fiddled with and dragged up a bit; when they are waist doesn't quite sit in the right place; when they are laced up so tightly that the front looks lovely but it all explodes out of the back or when the front 'stands out' so much that it looks great in the photos but anyone taller than the wearer gets a proper 'eyeful' of cleavage.

SenecaFalls · 27/10/2019 22:47

Sorry it looks like I'm posted something on the wrong thread. Blush

SenecaFalls · 27/10/2019 22:51

I agree it is often the fit with strapless wedding dresses. I'm seeing fewer of them these days though. Lately it seems that a bit of sleeve is back in fashion.

StCharlotte · 27/10/2019 23:07

the queen rocked some very elegant strapless gowns in her youth. And not just in the crown!

The dresses in the Crown are replicas of dresses HM actually wore.

StCharlotte · 27/10/2019 23:08

Speaking of which when does The Crown start?

itswinetime · 27/10/2019 23:13

November 17th I think!

mathanxiety · 28/10/2019 04:43

Agree with your comments @BlingLoving.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 28/10/2019 04:46

@StCharlotte

The original dresses worn by HM and Jackie Kennedy are nicer than the Crown copies.
Although I’ve always wondered why HMs dress always had those giant blue straps. They look a bit incongruous.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 28/10/2019 04:47

Angela Kelly’s book is out tomorrow dm link
Looks like a really interesting read.
Apparently she is the “flunky” who wears in the Queen’s shoes

QueenOfTheAndals · 28/10/2019 06:54

HM was quite busty, maybe she needed the support of thicker straps!

OP posts:
InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 28/10/2019 07:20

I honestly think the straps make the dress look so much nicer than the strapless one. Just personal preference, no hate for strapless dresses, just don't think they look as nice or elegant as the wearer thinks they do!

BertrandRussell · 28/10/2019 07:43

Imagine how frustrating it must be to design beautiful dresses then seeing them with those bloody Garter sashes all over them...
