Mako and Kako were both there but not their brother, presumably he's too young. Aiko might be away at school but if you can't miss a maths lesson for your father's enthronement then when can you??

Japan will actually face something of an imperial crisis in years to come as they won't have many royal family members. The princesses get demoted to commoners if they marry so it all rests on the crown prince's young son. If he has only daughters then either the monarchy dies out or they have to change the law to allow women to succeed to the throne.

Disfordarkchocolate · 24/10/2019 12:39

Poor Albert, he looks more ships purse than prince.

Disfordarkchocolate · 24/10/2019 12:40

Blooming spell check, purser!

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/10/2019 12:43

Albert looks like he's there to serve the drinks!

I sometimes think : What if the King/ Queen/ Prince/Princess/Duke/Duchess and their consort have had a major row or just discovered an infidelity and they are obliged to go to some important occasion such as the enthronement of the emperor, you can't just strop off and say "I'm not going" ( as I've done aftter a row).
You probably have to suck it up and present a united front and get constantly papped by photographers.
Who knows, looking at the style and jewels, what lives they lead. Some might be deeply unhappy and "putting up" with sh*t.
We know Diana and Charles did that until it all got too much.

ElspethFlashman · 24/10/2019 13:18

Well Diana used to let the game away. She had no poker face. She used to virtually sit there rolling her eyes if she was pissed off with Charles. She would listen to his speeches like she was being tortured. There was some tour to the Far East, I can't remember - Korea? where she wouldn't look at him AT ALL and we were all sitting at home going "Fuuuuuuuck....."

Another time at home when she had to present him with a polo cup he went in for the obligatory peck and she whipped her head at the last minute and gave him a mouthful of hair instead and it was front page on all the tabloids the next day.

She could be quite obvious during that era, which in hindsight was a bit much as she was shagging several blokes in succession during those years. But she was suffering from fixed persecutory delusions at the time too, she was pretty unwell.

Charles looked pure miserable during those years too but since that was his general hangdog face, you could theoretically say he always looked like that. I don't remember him doing anything obvious to give the game away. But she really wanted people to know how unhappy she was.

AudacityOfHope · 24/10/2019 14:18

Well if the rumours about William are true then presumably Kate's being doing some serious acting over the last year or so. I'm not sure I'd be able to do it as skilfully as she has.

SenecaFalls · 24/10/2019 14:38

At these international gatherings like the enthronement, it's always interesting to speculate about which languages are being spoken and to realize that for the most part, it is likely English. Both the Emperor and Empress are fluent in English and so for the most part are all of the other royals. Masako also speaks French. I imagine that Max and Letizia probably speak Spanish to each other if no non-Spanish speakers are around.

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 24/10/2019 14:43

What rumours about William @AudacityOfHope? He and Kate always look so happy and doubt either are particularly good actors to fake any of it.

ElspethFlashman · 24/10/2019 14:48

There's no way they're true. Kates clearly been living her best life since Louis was born.

Besides, do we even know if the Hanburys split up in the end? The story seemed to fizzle out a bit.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 24/10/2019 15:18

It's surprising there haven't been more divorced amongst monarchs or CP couplesSO
The older generation seem to put up and shut up.
I think most of the current crowd seem genuinely happy: Fred n Mary: HH & MM; Wax n Max
I woul d have a question mark over felipe and letizia

WineOrGinOrBoth · 24/10/2019 15:54

I think if you are wealthy enough you can afford separate rooms & living areas, homes even. You only need to turn up to your job so to speak.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 24/10/2019 15:55

I’m not saying that’s what’s happening though just surmising.

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/10/2019 17:37

I would have a question mark over felipe and letizia

What makes you think that @CurlyWurlyTwirly? The only problem I could see is that Queen Sofia might be an overbearing MiL! But the younger generation of royals seem much more faithful than their fathers.

Re the Cholmondelys, soon after all the rural rivalry stories came out there was a rumour that Rose was pregnant again. But I think it was only a rumour as she'd be pretty far gone by now and I've not heard a thing about it. I guess the royal solicitors shut everything down pretty well!

Apparently Kate was spotted in Sainsbos this morning buying Halloween outfits with the kids.

(Black trousers and black polo neck, apparently Grin)

ElspethFlashman · 24/10/2019 18:37

Nah, F + L are constantly looking at each other in photos - it's cute.

I think we can safely say Princess Anne's marriage is ambiguous at best.

escapade1234 · 24/10/2019 18:37

I love that she went to the supermarket when she could presumably order online with far less hassle. She’s trying to show her children how real people live I guess. Much as I’m as nosy as the next person, I’m quite pleased photos haven’t been published. It must be awful browsing in a shop, knowing everyone is watching you and trying to take your picture.

ElspethFlashman · 24/10/2019 18:43

Oooh look - Letizia has decided to go with the grey! I like it! I think it'll suit her.

Blingandrings · 24/10/2019 20:07

@ElspethFlashman**@Elspeth I think you're being a little unfair on Diana. Remember Charles started shagging Camilla a few years into the marriage much to her great distress. She took lovers eventually when it was clear Charles was finished with her after she had Harry. She said herself as soon as he was born the marriage went down the pan. He waited till she'd produced the heir and spare and then dispensed with her. She hinted that there wasn't much action as it was a 'miracle' Harrhy @Elspeth I think you're being a little unfair on Diana. Who could blame the poor woman if she looked for comfort elsewhere? She always loved Charles and wanted him back anyway.

Sorry that was all a bit of a mess. I lost the text then retyped some of it.
