Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Thanks Queen . Sounds good..may wait another little while. Do report back again as you get used to it and on your CG routine and tips! Your hair is fabulous !

SallieSallow · 27/06/2019 20:45

Enid I like the garnier masks we’ve talked about before but I use them as a leave in on wet or dry hair.

K1ss glad the spf is being introduced Grin all those other products will be pretty useless if you’re skin is being sun damaged. I’m in love with my airwrap too ❤️ definitely worth the price for me - I couldn’t even use a hairdryer previously as any kind of heat styling gave me terrible frizz/static.

YesQueen · 27/06/2019 21:33

My full routine sounds a lot but I mix and match products!

Wash - either child's farm sensitive shampoo, as I am co wash or Giovanni tea tree (I use the child's farm only when scalp is flaky)
Condition - noughty care taker, Moogoo, garnier blends oat, whatever I have!
Matrix morpher kick up protein treatment when needed
Leave in - Giovanni direct leave in or jessicurl rockin ringlets
Gel - ecoslay orange marmalade, jessicurl spiralicious
Mousse - Pantene no 5

Diffuse until bone dry and crunchy and go to bed. Scrunch in the morning with a little oil

TantricTwist · 27/06/2019 23:25

@K1ssIt Micellar water has oil in it that clings to the dirt and make up on your face, wiping it all off. It was invented in France due to water shortages about 100 years ago. I love it. I use Bioderma which suits me best but I've tried Garnier, Simple, LRP to name a few. I also use normal cleansers and face wash but Micellar water is just so handy and it means no matter what I always take my make up off at night somehow or other.

TantricTwist · 27/06/2019 23:33

I always acid tone after using micellar water so I've never had a problem re congestion etc.

EnidButton · 28/06/2019 00:47

I got one today Sallie Smile The banana one. 🍌 Thought it's be nice to put in and sit in the sun in the garden for a bit. Smells summery. Also a couple of bits from the Lee Stafford cactus range (mask and serum) and a frizzease cream serum. Basically I'm throwing silicones at it (apart from the granite mask.)

All the Shea Moisture masks they had in stock had protein in them. In fact it felt like most hair masks had some kind of protein listed.

EnidButton · 28/06/2019 00:51

Granite mask = garnier mask.

SallieSallow · 28/06/2019 08:56

I did think a granite mask sounded a bit extreme Enid Grin

Tant is micellar water best for makeup removing as K1ss said she doesn’t wear it often, or is it still ok for removing general dirt of the day and the SPF that she’s now going to be using Grin

TantricTwist · 28/06/2019 12:03

@SallieSallow for both.

If I have a morning shower I use a face wash otherwise I cleanse using micellar water or just a flannel and water.

Same for the evening I will use micellar water whether I've worn make up or not to take off the grime of the day.

SheStoodInTheStorm · 29/06/2019 07:44

I've read the sunscreen docs linked in the first post, but I'm wondering if there are any product recommendations for a face sunscreen to suit blemish-prone, sensitive, oily skin?

Also to update: bought the Neutrogena hydro boost as an interim between my usual LRP - I don't like the smell and I don't think it's been good for my skin. Sad

TantricTwist · 29/06/2019 13:23

@SheStoodInTheStorm. I have blemish prone, sensitive, oily skin and I really like Frezyderm SPF which I buy from Amazon. I use the 30 Spf but I also own the 50 Spf which I've just applied to DD who's off to the beach as she has v. pale pink skin as opposed to my more golden tones.
I'm also a big fan of Ultrasun face spf again I prefer 30 spf but they do of course have it in 50 spf.

My skin is showing signs of dehydration in this weather esp around the eyes so I'm applying much creamier creams at night.

I'm liking the EH Vit C cream, glad I bought the M&S summer box. I'm saving the face pack for the end of the summer or if I'm looking shockingly dehydrated before then and the hydro cooling eye gels I'm saving for a special occasion. Don't know why people are complaining about the box, there are some great Summer items in there.

I didn't need any more nail varnish, lipsticks or lip gloss just good skin care products and summer items.

K1ssIt · 29/06/2019 14:15

Just seen this on Amazon.

It's the set I bought with the full size Glamgow super mud.

£21 plus two tubes of their gravitymud thing too. Just posting it as I know the gravity mid is double that to buy on its own.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Exclusive-New-GLAMGLOW-Superstar-Skincare/dp/B07J9W9LVW/ref=pdgwmmcrsimhh0?pfrdds=blackjack-experiment-1&pfrddt=Gateway&pfrddi=mobile&pfrddm=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pdrddwg=7pKjk&pdrddr=BFJEEKRFVA5SJR5VG7N4&pdrddw=EN8Hv&pfrddr=VAM8Z2RB2VN2HPYXX22A&pfrddp=7b3fd1fb-58b0-49c8-a8ed-a5b2ef0ffff8&pdrddi=B07J9W9LVW

SheStoodInTheStorm · 29/06/2019 21:05

Thanks @TantricTwist I will take a look at those! I definitely have pinker skin prone to burning.

K1ssIt · 30/06/2019 01:54

@tantrictwist.

I'm almost certain I have spare mini tube of that EH VIT C cream if you'd like it posting? I think I got one in a birch box and it made my face incredibly dry, esp the chin area, I also bought he M and s box and don't I've given that cream away so am happy to post you mine if you feel ok PMing me your address.

I've also already used the sheet mask and readily disliked it, the cut of the eye holes was all wrong and you have to sort of fold it around the nose are to the mouth hole is over the mouth and unless held in place it sort of just came off and didn't touch most of the face. Hard to describe but I went to look on the m and s website and see there's another woman who seems to have had same problem.

I've been using the sunscreen that came with it and love that. I've got a few dry patches starting in chin but I don't know if it's the sunscreen or from where I've stopped with the other products until I get into the habit of using sunscreen.

I haven't left the house in the last few days but have still been applying spf-I'm guessing I should be applying all year round?

TantricTwist · 30/06/2019 16:06

Thanks @K1ssIt that’d be great I’ll pm my address. I read there are 2 plastic parts of the mask that both need to be removed and then the mask sort of sticks to your face as opposed to flopping around. Yes the Ultrasun spf is great and they give it away every year - so handy to pop in your bag. The EH cream deals quite greasy on my skin till it sinks in weird that it makes your skin dry. Does the M&S night cream / face mask work on you? How are you with face oils ? Maybe they suit you better. Like a nice rose hip oil. I use Clarins lotus oil they have one for drier skin, they smell gorgeous.

K1ssIt · 30/06/2019 19:09

tantric I'll log into Mumsnet on a browser on my PC tomorrow and get the PM. I use the app on my phone and dont know my password off top of head (I can't find a way to access PMs on the app-annoying)

I think I must have had a dud face mask as it was def all one sheet, makes sense though for it to have been two parts, I've had a few like that in the past and prefer those types. (We are talking both talking about the Rodial one?)

TantricTwist · 30/06/2019 20:21

It was a sheet with plastic wrap on the front and back and lots of people were just taking off one side apparently?!?

I'll let you know how I get on with mine once i try it out.

I've been out for a long walk in the afternoon / evening sun with my Frezyderm 30 spf and my skin feels good, not burnt or sore in the slightest.

I used an emergency gift size hot cloth cleanser, I'd put in the shower ages ago, when I got back and it was really lovely actually, it was by Pure from M&S, it smelt gorgeous a bit like EH and was lovely and creamy.

K1ssIt · 30/06/2019 21:06

I misread and thought you meant the mask was supposed to be two parts.

I remembered taking off a couple of pieces of cellophane from the mask and though I was maybe going mad so have just been and checked the empty packaging (I shall keep the empty packet of face masks in I look great a few days later and want to repurchase lol) and Id actually removed four pieces of cellophane and had put them inside the empty packet.

Just been through my WhatsApp convo with my sister as we always send each other daft photos of ourself wearing face masks to see if I'd sent a pic of this one and I had which I've attached. Have blurred my bathroom wall and an identifying birthmark under one of my eyes but hopefully you can kind see what I mean about the holes not matching and it refusing to stick to face.

I'm convinced I've either got a weird sized head or I've had a dud. 😂. Lots of people are loving it though so hopefully yours will be great.

Oh yeah it looks really floppy doesn't it how annoying and the holes are really low Grin Confused

SplatPancake · 01/07/2019 22:48

Hello! Long time, etc., etc.

I’m after some recommendations. I’ve managed to banjax my skin somehow- the mild rosacea I had a couple of years ago, and which was pretty much “dormant”, or st least under complete control, is back with a vengeance...

A couple of months ago I tried something which had Shea butter in it (I wasn’t aware it was there). So that started a terrible cystic reaction over cheeks. Then all the stuff I had been happily using previously started to cause reactions. I’m already well off the Hyaluronic Acid boat, but now my well-beloved Niacinamide is causing flare ups too (both Vitamin B?).

It’s really stressing me out - everyday more redness, more lumps and bumps, more scarring....

Anyway, I’ve just picked up a subscription for Soolantra, and I need to sort out a non-threatening SPF, and I thought that perhaps the knowledge PLUS personal trials and tribulations of this group might help — I’m going cross-eyed looking at INCI lists.

So I need:
• SPF 30+ (Preferably physical )
• No or low silicones
• No hyaluronic acid
• No niacinamide

Does such a thing even exist?!?!?

wiltingfast · 02/07/2019 12:35

Sorry to annoy, I am just wondering if any of you would know of a good replacement for the basic LRP Toleriane Fluide ?

I have totally failed to find it anywhere online or in the shops Sad I have been sold the Ultra instead (too greasy) and the Sensitive (gave me a rash). I have oily very sensitive skin.

I appreciate your time, many thanks Flowers

cad186 · 02/07/2019 14:15

Splatpancake I'm having a nightmare with my rosacea too, can't pinpoint what is causing flare ups and I'm still breastfeeding so reluctant to use anything like soolantra yet. I use bare minerals prep step spf, not sure if that might suit your requirements? What cleanser and moisturiser are you using at the moment that hasn't got HA or niacinamide in?

SallieSallow · 02/07/2019 18:30

Splat the Clinique Mineral spf 30 might fit the bill
www.clinique.co.uk/product/1661/40649/sun-self-tan/sun-protection/spf30-mineral-sunscreen-fluid-for-face or this REN one is recommended by Sali Hughes as being suitable for people with rosacea.

SallieSallow · 02/07/2019 18:32

wilting I’ve never used that LRP moisturiser but I know a few here did so hopefully they’ll be along to let you know what they replaced it with.

botemp · 02/07/2019 19:11

Sorry am in Paris so am probably skirting over a lot of previous things. wilting, Toleriane sensitive fluid is meant to be similar. Think Enid switched from one to the other without issue. Was it the hydroboost creme gel from Neutrogena you're using as that's meant to be unscented?

Splat, I did check the pharmacies here as I was there anyhow. Could only see SPF50 versions, but I suppose you can just use less. The bioderma mineral and avene mostly meet your criteria. Someone mentioned Coola spf30 and rosacea upthread. The Clinique one is very nice but a tiny bottle and I thought it may have silicones but can't remember exactly. Have attached INCI of bioderma (2nd pic) and avene (1st pic). I think there may be a Japanese one without silicones that also came in spf30, from the Mommy! brand, I'd have to check.
