Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Hi Sallie and enid not going on holiday until next year but I'm one of these people who likes to be organised too early lol (only for some things though)

EnidButton · 04/12/2019 11:23

Mint Me too. I like planning things. Smile

Wondering how long the PM lipstick will take to arrive. Bet they had a huge amount of orders.

Outtheforest · 04/12/2019 11:28

Have been very good at my very basic routine of wash, moisturise, suncream and BHA added twice a week. My skin has responded by looking exactly the same.
The filaments on my nose are really awful as are the pores on my cheeks. And I don't even know where to begin with my chin

Jedstre · 04/12/2019 13:10

forest how long have you been doing that routine? It takes a couple of months at least before there’s any change and even then it won’t be a dramatic change. I've been using retinoids for 18 months at least and acids several times a week. I still have filaments on my nose as my skin is pretty oily. I’d say my pores have improved with the combination of the above and niacinamide in a moisturiser but it’s taken a long time.

Talking of oily skin my Biore UV oil control base has arrived. I’ll report back once I’ve tried it.

bo I see what you mean about Nadine Baggott. She just posted about a 'collab' she's doing with E45. I don't know if it's the time of year, (Christmas obviously being the busiest most competitive time for retail companies) but it seems to be everyone on Instagram and YouTube has a collaboration or sponsorship going. I'm steadily unfollowing those that seem to post #ad every other picture. It's getting tiresome.

botemp · 04/12/2019 19:53

forest, twice a week is still the build up period really. Every other day or every day seems to be the sweet spot for many BHA users. The game changer for me was the fifty shades of snails technique, doing that a few times a couple of weeks apart really cleared out the bulk of it and then it was just a matter of maintenance with BHA. But at the end of the day, it's not the miracle product it is for everyone, some really do seem to respond better to it than others.

Did you ever work out whether it's a primer or SPF, jedstre?

Hmm, I'll be pleased if PM lipsticks get here before Christmas, Enid, I think they're coming from the US and it's 4-8 working days normally, I'm guessing it could well be longer than that with the volume of orders. I've yet to hear anything from them.

I don't really care about posting ads, and it's preferable to shadily not declaring them. My issue with Nadine has been that she's ridiculously complimentary and praising sponsored products when she'd be a lot more level about them without it. She doesn't get his excited or praising about products she's loved and continues to use forever. She'll claim it's her new go to product and you never hear about it again, never see it in empties, etc. There was a marked difference when she discussed the Skinceuticals CE ferulic unsponsored where she acknowledged she's been getting hers for free since forever as a beauty editor but thinks that it's a lot of money for what it is and also discussed other down sides and how necessary you should really consider a Vitamin C and whether it requires that high of an investment. In a sponsored video, it was the complete opposite and it was lacking any sort of fair assessment which is just uncharacteristic for her video styles when she claims the sponsorship doesn't influence her opinion. I don't think she's recommending anything she wouldn't otherwise recommend but it all feels very hard sell in comparison to her normal content.

I like planning things too Mint but loathe actually booking holidays (and flying/airports) so nothing on the horizon for me, I should try and sort something though as winter is really, really getting me down and there’s months of it to go yet Sad

I reckon those PM lipsticks will take a while Enid they must have had masses of orders.

Jedstre I was trying to stop buffering tret (got the autocorrect again Shock didn’t think buggering was something I typed regularly but autocorrect seems to have different ideas Grin) which is probably where I’m probably going wrong, will go back to it again.

Forest I agree with Jedstre it’s going to take a while for a new routine to work and sebaceous filaments are pretty impossible to get rid of completely. There is a routine you can do once every few weeks that helps but as you’re quite new to BHA not sure if I’d recommend trying that yet.

I thought Nadine was one of the better youtubers so it’s a shame she’s gone down the sponsored ad route. I’m not keen on youtubers in general though, apart from lovely Lisa Eldridge I find them all a bit irritating and over excited/shouty.

SallieSallow · 04/12/2019 20:06

Cross posted with Bo I couldn’t remember the name of the routine though knew it had a snail in it 🐌 🐌🐌

botemp · 04/12/2019 20:13

Yes my YouTube subscriptions have had a good cull recently. I couldn't remember the last time I watched a Dr Sam video, the clickbait titles and general 'dumbing' down (as in tackling more entry level stuff) meant she got the boot. Dr Dray has gone quite sponsor heavy as well which I find tricky when she says things like 'as a dermatologist I believe this is the best x'. Not so strange in the US probably but it feels icky to me. It's mostly food subscriptions now. And Lisa Eldridge Smile

Karcheer · 04/12/2019 20:42

Just had my email from dermatica and they are giving me Tretinoin and Niacinamide.
I think I might increase my bha to three times a week, or every other day.

SallieSallow · 04/12/2019 22:09

Welcome to the tret club Karcheer and don’t let all our talk of sad dusty peely faces put you off Grin some of that is normal (which hopefully they’ve explained) when you first start using it.

Oh that’s a shame about Dr Dray Bo she was another I liked, bit of an odd character but I much preferred her to the ‘heyyyyyyy you guys’ false enthusiasm shouty type. Dr Sam has annoyed me for quite some time.

Jedstre · 04/12/2019 22:15

@karcheer can I ask how the consultation bit went with dermatica? Did you ask for anti ageing? I’m using tretinoin that I purchased in Spain. I’m not going back anytime soon so I’ll be looking to repurchase somehow. Does anyone know anything about the eyelash product they do?

botemp · 04/12/2019 22:22

It's bioprost so should do the job but I think it's pricier than the Tret with them and bioprost does come with risks, eye colour change and some other issues but that was the specific brand product, they may be using a far lower concentrations with less risks. The bioprost product I bought here in our version of Superdrug that was recalled as it should not have been sold without prescription had a low but very effective concentration. Only cost €10 for a six month supply. Sigh, I should have stocked up when I had the chance.

Thanks. Do you know anything about Lilash?

Outtheforest · 05/12/2019 05:16

Thanks all, I'm not fully new to BHA I had the routine going for several months earlier this year but fell off the wagon while doing alot of travelling in August and September. Annoyingly my skin is now worse since restarting than when I was doing not much. That technique looks interesting, think it will be a couple of weeks before I next head into any sort of civilisation but I'll build up BHA use and plan to pick up a mask while I'm there.
Would any mud mask work?

Karcheer · 05/12/2019 08:48

@Jedstre yes, I just filled in the online questionnaire and one of the options was anti-aging.

botemp · 05/12/2019 08:59

Forest, yes, any mud mask would work, simpler the better really. I wouldn't go for something like that really hyped one whose name I've now forgotten (Amazonian?) but it's in powder form and you add apple cider vinegar to it, that would probably be too much.

I'm not familiar with Lilash, Jedstre, but I've just looked it up and it appears to be more of a lash conditioner rather than a grower, it doesn't contain any peptides which they usually do. The wording is a bit suspect also, it's for the 'treatment of long, curled lashes' which somewhat suggests you already need to have those Confused

Outtheforest · 05/12/2019 12:07

"Botemp" I'd struggle to get something fancy here anyway, I've had an all natural mood mask from a local company before that was nice so will try to grab a pot of that. Failing that the fancy chemist stocks a few imported drugstore brands I'll be sure to check its basic with no added acids etc

Pupsiecola · 07/12/2019 11:17

Hello all,

Been a bit AWOL but looking to jump back in. Hope everyone's well?

Took delivery of a DE Vit C yesterday and it's worryingly dark in colour. Use by date (now on bottle) is next July. I'll take it into Space NK tomorrow. Wish it didn't suit me so much.

I think I need to find an alternative. Any suggestions?

Also, has anyone used Kate Somerville?

botemp · 07/12/2019 13:00

I gather Kate Somerville is doing the influencer round then? I've never tried it, have looked up some INCIs in the past and wasn't impressed enough to put in an order. Looks to be a brand that's 'nice' to use.

I'm still quite pleased with the Timeless UK Vitamin C. Can't believe you're having this issue again Angry

Pupsiecola · 07/12/2019 14:52

Ha! Are you saying I'm easily influenced Bo. Not as far as I know. Never seen an ad for them and don't really follow anyone other than SH and CH: the latter has raved about the brand for years. I had a £50 voucher for my birthday and a £25 voucher for spending £100 and £15 in reward points and a full size GWP offer. One of the feeebie options was a KS cleanser and I didn't fancy any of the others. So I looked up some of the range on INCI Decoder and those thought they looked quite decent Confused. (The Goats Milk cleaning milk and moisturiser).

I was after a more nourishing moisturiser as I'm still using my Cosrx spring/summer one and don't feel it's enough. I've not tried anything new for a year or more, apart from the Neo Strata retinol.

I'll take a look at the Timeless. Thanks.

Jedstre · 07/12/2019 17:52

@Pupsiecola I use Timeless Vit C &E &Ferulic acid serum too. I order direct from Timeless. I’m onto second bottle. I used DE Vit C, 3 bottles, but all were bought in US before we could get it here and no problem with oxidation. I’d say the timeless is a bit more watery in consistency than the DE.

botemp · 07/12/2019 18:07

I think there was some sort of financial relationship between CH and KS, think involving bringing the brand to the UK and SH has recently done an in the bathroom with KS when she came to the UK to promote the brand, I had assumed it was bouncing all over UK Instagram.

Yes, buy timeless from their UK site directly (they also sell the odd bit of Japanese and Korean skincare), anywhere else it's a crapshoot whether it's fresh or not and it does oxidise quickly. I take a week's worth out so I don't need to go down to the kitchen especially for it and when I was sick for a week and didn't use it, it had coloured from clear to yellow pretty quickly.

Thank. I'll take a look at Timeless.

Not seen KS all over IG but then I generally follow fitness people.
