Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Hi, I've been doing lots of reading of your very informative threads and was wondering if you lovely ladies might be able to help?

I am 48, very dry skin, not wrinkly, not prone to breakouts, not sensitive (although a couple of years ago I used Liquid Gold in the evening and then Dragon's Blood the following morning = reaction! They were in my M&S beauty calendar and I had no idea what they were - having done some reading here I can see why this happened now!).

I have decided to give retinols/retinoids a whirl but before doing so I would like to get some skincare basics in place. I have started using Frezyderm spf in the morning. I use Bare Minerals original foundation which I am quite happy with. However I worry that the 'buffing' needed to get a good finish on the foundation might have a negative effect on the spf underneath. I'd be rather loathe to but would I be better off using a liquid foundation instead?

botemp · 23/11/2019 17:46

Hi and welcome, (sorry for whatever reason MN isnt displaying your username). How aggressively are you buffing? As long as it's not abrasive and not that more intense than a normal makeup application it shouldn't be that much of an issue in theory provided you leave plenty of time between application of SPF and bare minerals.

However, I would point out that the mineral powders contain a fair bit of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide which can destabilise chemical UV filters. There isn't that much research into it but taking the two risks together I would say there's definitely potential to be compromising your SPF protection inadvertently.

Bare minerals complexion rescue (or called something like that) may be an alternative? It's more of a tinted moisturiser but has a gel like texture so not like a traditional liquid foundation.

Thanks botemp. You have confirmed what I have been thinking to be honest. Will use up what I have of the BM powder (as not much sign of the sun at the mo..) and then have a look into the BM alternative. Thank you. No doubt I'll be back asking questions some time soon. Big learning curve all this.

SallieSallow · 24/11/2019 00:07

albi I use bare minerals complexion rescue & highly recommend it. Retinols can make your skin dry/flakey/dusty looking (see previous posts in this thread) for some time before you start seeing improvements and complexion rescue is much more forgiving in that stage than most other foundations. If your skin is dry I think it might be more suitable for you than the powder foundation anyway, though I reacted badly to something in that which is possibly making me prejudiced against it Grin

Tsmummy08 · 24/11/2019 17:56

Sallie I was finding Ceramidin not quite enough, so I got Darphin Hydraskin Riche which has been great, highly recommended. I'll also get the Cerave cream when I get a chance but the Darphin is really rich and has reduced the tret stinginess.

Karcheer · 25/11/2019 09:05

I bought an Esteemed Lauder lipstick yesterday and the lady threw in some samples, Daywear moisturiser, Advanced night repair, Advanced night micro cleansing foam. Are any of these worth trying? Or should I just throw them?

Karcheer · 25/11/2019 09:05

Estee not esteemed!?!?

SallieSallow · 25/11/2019 10:39

Ts I found a travel size FAB ultra repair moisturiser in my stash and that seems to be doing the trick, I remember using it for tret face before and it worked well but had forgotten about it for some reason. I’ll have a look into the darphin one as well though, I’ve got a few things on my list to see if there are any Black Friday deals.

I ventured into a John Lewis yesterday and came out with a Charlotte Tilbury airbrush powder that I absolutely did not need Blush but will come in handy for sticking in my bag to use at work or on a night out.

Karcheer I don’t think I’ve used any Estée Lauder skincare (if I have it was many moons ago and I can’t remember) but I’ve seen the advanced night repair discussed quite positively here so that might be worth a try, you’re not using any other kind of serum at the moment are you?

Karcheer · 25/11/2019 11:17

@salliesallow no, not added serums into my regime yet.

botemp · 25/11/2019 12:45

I usually keep a ANR sample in my emergency stash, alongside Sisley black rose mask. Never ever paid out for the full product as I like them but not the accompanying inflated price tag. It's nice for when skin is feeling a bit fragile but as a day to day serum it's not really all that special IME. Also a lot cheaper alternative available from S.Korea but your skin really has to like fermented ingredients, my skin likes them a lot but for others it's a breakout nightmare.

I'm not too familiar with the rest of EL skincare, things I've tried (but wouldn't be able to tell you what it was) irritated the hell out of my skin, it's very traditional overpriced skincare that spends more on the marketing than the product. Generally I toss out any samples unless I can it take it away for a short trip (so familiar enough with the product/clean enough INCI) or am genuinely interested in it.

All the swapping and changing, as much fun as it can seem, really detracts from keeping things simple and effective.

I got some compliments on my skin today after using the Charlotte Tilbury powder, maybe it was worth the £35 after all. Her TV adverts still annoy me mightily though Grin

EnidButton · 27/11/2019 04:51

That's fantastic Sallie! That's the holy grail of compliments imo.

I have that powder but remember being underwhelmed by it but I think I'll get it out and try again. My powder technique is different now so maybe it'll be good. Smile You've inspired me to try it.

justilou1 · 27/11/2019 05:20

Hi ladies! Just wanted to introduce myself... I’m in Australia and wanted to snoop because we can now order from Selfridges and get better bargains. (And more choices.) I’m 47, a skincare and sunscreen addict (obvious reasons). (I avoid the sun like the plague.) I am tossing up between the Hourglass Unlocked and the Ghost Edit as my Christmas present for myself, Bo. Unlocked doesn’t come into stores until 3rd Dec here, but I will wait and play with both and compare. I suspect it’s more versatile than the Ghost, as can use as a complete eye and face palette in a pinch or for travel. (Am blonde, green-eyed, medium toned.) Just a quick recommendation too, for whoever was asking about Ceramidin for tretonoin skin.... it’s not enough, but the Cicapair cream by Dr Jart is the bomb. Very healing and soothing. Makeup won’t stick over the top, but as a balm applied an hour or two after the tret, it’s divine. (Also superb to chuck in handbag for cuticles, etc.)

botemp · 27/11/2019 07:54

Welcome Lou, Sallie's our Hourglass addict although think she always buys through beautylish which I think ship to AU too.

I didn't know CT did TV commercials, I can only imagine how annoying they are. I stay away from the brand as it is anyhow, first shady social media practices, more recent Estée laundry expose maker her out to be fostering an abusive and toxic work environment. Ugh. Sorry, sure the powder is lovely, iirc when it was launched it was said the Bourjois healthy mix powders was a close dupe.

I'm coming to the conclusion I must have really mild Tret face compared to others. It really doesn't like anything heavy, nor need it, thankfully. I am getting a bit dehydrated latelythoigh. I had the brief brain fart that Bioeffect EGF would be really nice right now for that Confused Not sure if I want to spend that money, I'll have a research if anyone else has created something similar for less.

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 27/11/2019 08:03

Thanks Justilou I did see the cicapair & will add to my watch list though I think it may be similar to the La Roche posay cicaplast gel that I already have and use. My tret face has calmed down now though think it was as much to do with the sudden cold snap we had as with tret. Wish I was in Australia Grin

I have both of those hourglass palettes, I’m very dark (hair & eyes) medium sallow skin & I use both for everything including eyeshadow. On me Edit is very subtle and more for day wear, it’s also very similar to last years edit palette. Fine by me as I was hitting pan but if you have a fairly full one from last year I wouldn’t bother. Unlocked is much more noticeable/obviously made up on me so I keep it for nights out.

Enid I wasn’t super enthused by the CT powder and was regretting it as an unneeded impulse buy but seems others notice something I don’t!

SallieSallow · 27/11/2019 08:12

And yes Bo is right I usually buy hourglass from beautylish though I did get the edit palette from space NK as they had an offer on at the time.

We are inundated with the CT Christmas adverts here, very annoying but I hate all Christmas adverts especially when they start in early November Angry I didn’t know anything much about her until I got dragged into John Lewis, & was only hovering round her counter as didn’t want to go the clothes bit & was waiting for friends. Just as well I very rarely venture into department stores Grin

justilou1 · 27/11/2019 08:51

Thanks for the heads up on the Hourglass, @Sallie - maybe your name says it all, but my skin is very golden-hued (Well, I like to tell myself that, but in reality, think bordering hepatitis). I don’t play nicely with pinks, so I suspect the Ghost Edit and I may not be friends. I intend to do a half face of each and go outside.
Ironically, I loathe the heat and am missing living in Europe terribly. Reading about boots and leather trousers, jackets and sparkly Christmas jumpers with ever so much envy.

SallieSallow · 27/11/2019 09:44

Yes my name definitely says it all justilou though I’m a pale shade of yellow at the moment with it being winter, the unlocked will probably suit me better in summer. We should swap as I loathe dark & cold, I do like boots, jackets, jeans etc but I’m so cold blooded that unless it’s well over 30 degrees I still wear them Grin Living in the north UK I don’t own/wear summer clothes at all!

justilou1 · 28/11/2019 05:46

Meanwhile, having lived in the Netherlands for years, I have so much Winter gear that’s been in storage bags untouched for years, that I have bitten the bullet and pulled it out to edit for charity. (A little piece of me is dying inside with each bag I throw in the charity bin.)

SallieSallow · 01/12/2019 18:12

Did anyone get anything in the Black Friday sales? I resisted as far as makeup and skincare go as didn’t really need anything and there’s always offers on at boots, look fantastic etc anyway, I did get a new hoover and 2 pairs of trainers though.

EnidButton · 01/12/2019 18:21

Just my usual Elemis cream-oil stuff as it was 30% off. Other than that, just gifts that I was going to get anyway so a discount was a bonus.

My skin is terrible atm. Hoping it's just the sudden change in temps and too much hot chocolate We've had the heating on lots more than usual as it's frosty outside. Anyone else finding their skin tricky atm?

SallieSallow · 01/12/2019 18:27

Yes but same as you Enid I think it’s directly related to the weather/use of central heating. It was fine when the weather warmed up last week but flakey again now. My skin (just like the rest of me!) hates winter Sad

SallieSallow · 01/12/2019 18:33

Also meant to ask if anyone got any of the beauty advent calendars? I didn’t, was tempted by a few but there were too many things I wouldn’t use and I’m trying to purge rather than accumulate more stuff.

botemp · 01/12/2019 18:35

My skin was tricky with the previous sudden colder weather. It's only just gotten colder again here so probably will get a bit fickle soon, I need hydrating things rather than moisturising but I've got my eye on Korean things that probably won't arrive until after winter Hmm I was going to refute Lou's assessment of Dutch winters surely not necessitating that much storage space, but I can't as outside temps beg to differ at the moment. Whereabouts did you live Lou?

I only bought hair stuff, it was 3 for 2 and a further 25% off that worked out to about half price so that was a good offer but I had or am about to run out of all three products so it worked out well. I've resisted a nuface mini on LF which is 20% off with a further 25% off so it comes in quite cheap but feedback has been tepid on here and I'm not sure if I have the patience to be using it everyday.

The Hourglass chat is reminding me, does anyone watch Michele Wang on YT, she's sort of replaced Tati (she got a bit too dodge for me since the vitamin brand and all the drama) for me on luxury reviews. She reviews a lot of Hourglass products.
