Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Space NK suggested Darphin Hydraskin Riche or DE Lala Retro - anyone got any experience of these? I think CJ use/d the DE one or was it the Protini? Thanks :)

botemp · 18/11/2019 11:54

I found it on eBay here Tsm. Eucerin Urea is always good with dry flaky skin and I found the Toleriane riche far too heavy for me in the midst of Tret dryness. Lala retro isn't that great iirc (not from personal use just reviews that it's a bit meh). Institut Esthederm has a good rich moisturiser as well (with fragrance and potentially essential oils?) Can't recall which one it was though.

Karcheer, would suggest Cerave Hydrating as well. Frezyderm velvet SPF50 is my preferred European sunscreen. Comes in a lot of excess plastic though, will have to think of something else that would suit your needs and not be such an environmental issue WRT shipping from afar/packaging.

Thanks Bo, couldn't find any reasonably priced sellers on Amazon or the usual K-beauty websites, not sure why. I'll have a look at the IE one but I've spotted the Darphin 8-flower nectar cream too, which looks very rich (but possibly too perfumey). Cheers!

botemp · 18/11/2019 12:58

It looks to be discontinued in Korea, there were definitely k-shops that sold it in the past but it was sold out and it didn't look to be a popular product going by user ratings. Darphin Nectar cream is definitely very perfumery, it's pretty much all scent. Going by the INCI of the belif, I have to say it's actually quite similar looking to the Cerave moisturising cream, bar a few bloaty ingredients and niacinamide and licorice root extract. Probably a different consistency, but not that dissimilar.

OP posts:
Tsmummy08 · 18/11/2019 17:25

Bo Hmm I wondered if it was discontinued... I'll get the Cerave cream (got the lotion already but that's not rich enough) and probably the Darphin Hydraskin as something luxe is needed at the moment :) Thanks for your help!

Karcheer · 18/11/2019 18:28

I’ve just ordered the cerave and some more moisturiser and Boots have 25% off both if that’s useful to anyone...

botemp · 18/11/2019 18:47

Karcheer, I've had a think about SPF and this one from Purito may somewhat fit the bill. It's in environmentally friendly eco packaging and they take the impact on environment very seriously during production. It is Korean (whose SPF regulations have been a bit iffy in the past, for which I've always been hesitant to recommend them, but they've tightened them up these last years) but you can purchase it from UK sellers so it's not like you're ordering a single one to get flown in special but it has obviously been flown/shipped in from further afield. So aside from that ticks most boxes and it contains a lot of soothing ingredients that will be helpful when starting on Tret. Have not used it personally but it does come recommended by Labmuffin who is a rare Skincare blogger in Australia that doesn't just peddle anything.

TS I was going to suggest a cerave cream (rather than lotion) or Toleriane Riche by LRP. I know Bo found it too rich but I have some and I use it sparingly on the areas that get driest from tret. Dr Emma (works with Dr Sam) recommended this for tret dryness.

SallieSallow · 18/11/2019 19:10

Karcheer The cheeky wipes are so called because the original product was for babies’ bottoms Grin the ones I’ve got are facial ones but not sure if there’s any difference apart from the shape. I might actually get the baby wipe ones next time as presume they’ll be a bit bigger.

I’m liking the aquamilk spf that Ts recommended, it’s nice and moisturising for tret face but not sure if it meets all your criteria.

Talking about tret face I’ve got a bad case today Shock and yes as usual it appeared mid day when I was in work. The weather here has suddenly turned bitterly cold today though so that’s not helped.

botemp · 18/11/2019 19:24

I optimistically bought two tubes of LRP Toleriane Riche but it really is too rich for me, even with the worst of Tret face. Makes for an excellent hand cream though.

Weather is surprisingly cold here too, wouldn't be surprised if we see a bit of snow before December and it's pretty rare to see that in December, never mind November. Ugh midday Tret face is the worst, I always looked so dusty and sad. And like I had the makeup skills of a tween with access to really cheap makeup only.

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 18/11/2019 21:04

Dusty is a good way of describing it Bo and yes my makeup had gone patchy too Sad I’ve used P50 and slathered on cerave and cicaplast so hoping it’s better tomorrow. I wouldn’t be surprised if we got snow, it’s definitely cold enough though yes extremely unusual here at this time of year, I don’t think we got any at all last winter.

I forgot to confess that I gave into temptation and ordered the hourglass unlocked palette Blush I really like it but it’s nowhere near as subtle as the usual edit palettes, it’s a much more noticeabley made up look so I’ll be keeping it for nights out. And it’s definitely one for darker skin tones, I don’t think it would suit anyone paler than me (medium) unless they were going for heavily contoured Instagram look.

EnidButton · 21/11/2019 04:41

That's good to know Sallie I was eyeing it up but doesn't sound like it would suit my skin tone.

I lost the thread. 😱 Haven't been posting as my skin is behaving poorly atm and I'm trying (and succeeding) to avoid thinking about it. Hopefully it will settle down again.

Outtheforest · 21/11/2019 05:17

Hi all, I lost this thread for a long time but after burning my face horrifically at the weekend I was inspired to look it up and get back into a proper routine. My skin has generally not been to awful apart from chin and jaw spots which I'm pretty certain are hormonal due to appearing at the same time each month.
Back to everyday no exceptions suncream now, particularly as we're heading into summer here. I'm jealous of all of you expecting snow, impossible to get into the Christmas spirit at 25 degrees and that's only the start

TheFuckingDogs · 21/11/2019 06:18

Hi, I’ve had a look through the skincare post but you all sound very knowledgeable and I’m an amateur so thought I’ll just post this and see if anyone can make a suggestion!
I want to get my lovely MIL a good quality moisturiser or something along those lines.
She has very dry skin and is prone to eczema (although not actually on her face) she doesn’t react well to highly perfumed products although has used products like body shop coconut body butter so her skin can obviously deal with perfume to an extent.
She would never treat herself to something “posh” so we would like to get her something nice but obviously fitting the above brief - any ideas?
She is 60 if that helps and still has fairly young kids and a stressful job!

TheFuckingDogs · 21/11/2019 06:19

And sorry if I’m posting this in the wrong place Smile

botemp · 21/11/2019 06:39

Hi again, out Smile Temps are slowly on the rise again so no chance of snow anytime soon.

Dogs, welcome, I'm not quite sure if you're asking for a face or body moisturiser recommendation?

OP posts:
happinessischocolate · 21/11/2019 06:53

Morning

I'm 54 and my eyelids are getting really dry, probably due the the central heating and cold weather, can anyone recommend a good cream for them. It's the inner corners of my eyes and the skin is so dry it's becoming wrinkly too Sad

botemp · 21/11/2019 06:56

chocolate do you normally just take your moisturiser up and around the eyes and now it's dry or do you not use anything there normally?

OP posts:
TheFuckingDogs · 21/11/2019 07:01

For the face 😊

ClientListQueen · 21/11/2019 07:06

I love Ceramidin cream for tret face!

botemp · 21/11/2019 07:20

Dogs, it's really difficult to recommend a moisturiser for the face for someone else as you know so little about their product history.
You may say she's very dry but for all I know she's actually very dehydrated and a super rich moisturiser which potentially lead to breakouts. For very dry and/or dehydrated skin I usually recommend Eucerin Urea 5% but it's not anything fancy but it will do the job and stands somewhat solitary as a product. Tbh considering she has sensitive prone to eczema skin there isn't much of a point to getting something more expensive as the only thing you'd be paying more for is some sort of active ingredient or a nice smell which aren't helpful to her described skin type. Lovely as the idea is of getting her something indulgent it may not be the thing for her at all and end up going unused. Body or hand creams are usually safer choices as body skin is a little less finicky and diverse in comparison to the face.

OP posts:
TheFuckingDogs · 21/11/2019 07:29

Thank you! I was thinking that would probably be the answer! Back to the drawing board!

SallieSallow · 21/11/2019 18:29

Out I am majorly jealous, I loathe absolutely everything about winter including Christmas but think I would possibly enjoy that more somewhere warm and bright. Get slapping the spf 50 on though Grin

happiness I just use an eye gel (alpha h) as it can be used all over the lid but it’s more of an instant cooling/brightening/smoothing product rather than anything that gives lasting results. I’ve also got the ‘no makeup’ eye makeup from dr perricone which is a sort of cream/primer/shadow combo product but is quite moisturising and gives a cleaner/brighter look to eyelids. I find heavier creams don’t really do anything apart from irritate my eyes, cerave do one though which is reasonably priced and might be worth a try (not used it personally) and I’ve seen a Khiels (sp) one recommended on here but can’t remember the exact name.

Dogs could you treat MIL to some posh body products instead of face moisturiser as sounds like she’s more tolerant of body stuff and it’s not so much of a minefield! Or perfume if you can sound her out to see what she’d like.

Client I’m going to have a look at that, cerave doesn’t seem to be doing the trick on this very cold weather Sad

Enid hope your skin settles down soon Flowers

Outtheforest · 21/11/2019 18:47

"Sallie" I absolutely love the heat generally and hated UK winters but theres something about seeing pictures of snow and Christmas trees that gets me. If I could have 3 days of UK winter then back here it would be great.
I've been slapping the factor 50 on each day this week and it's made me realise the damage the sun was doing. I'm looking smoother and more even toned already. Hoping the long term damage wont catch up with me in a few years

botemp · 21/11/2019 18:53

Dogs, alternatively you could get her a hydrating serum, if you think she'd be inclined the extra step in her routine. It's usually much appreciated by dry skin and dehydrated skin alike. The Pestle and Mortar one is pricey but comes in very nice packaging and feels special to receive. More mid range priced is the Vichy Mineral 89 which is also great, comes in a nice glass bottle, etc. Resist the temptation to get a P&M gift set though, the moisturiser wouldn't be that great for her.
