Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

With the exception of P50 everything I use is low - medium price and my skin is better than it ever was when I was spending a fortune on lotions and potions because I actually know what I’m doing now Grin

Bo I remember with dread the midday face falling off and makeup clinging to the flakey patches Sad interesting that you said P50 helped as I thought that would make it worse (BHA used to if used in the same routine) I might start using P50 in the morning.

Jedstrer I think I’ll try HA, gap, tret, gap and cerave moisturiser (which has niacinamide and ceramides) last thing. I’m going to start with once a week as have some work related stuff next week that I cannot have a melting face for Shock and work up to 4 days.

botemp · 14/10/2019 11:39

Ok, so current routine as promised.

Morning

Cerave hydrating cleanser (€7,90 for just under 300ml, I've only just started on this so not sure how long it will last but going by use of LRP Toleriane hydrating cleanser which is very similar but is 400ml I'm estimating about 4-5 months)

Timeless CE ferulic (€28.48 for 30ml, lasts me about 3.5-4 months) If I was a more money than sense type of person I'd be buying the Skinceuticals CE ferulic which is 4x the price but it's not even twice as good, it's only marginally better and it doesn't justify the price difference for me and my skin.

LRP Toleriane Sensitive cream (€13.56 for 40ml, lasts me a little over a month, I'm frugal with it though as I don't like a heavily moisturised face)

Heliocare Mineral Fluid SPF 50 for face and a bit of neck (€24.60 for 50ml lasts me a little over a month)

Suncover SPF 30 for neck, cleavage, and backs of hands (€14.95 for 250ml, lasts a long time not sure exactly how long, will be trying Altruist SPF 50 after this as I really should be using SPF 50 on my neck)

I alternate two nighttime routines:

Evening 1

DHC deep cleansing oil (€23,60 for 200ml lasts me 4 months, IME cleansing oils are more cost effective than balms and I prefer them anyhow).

Cerave hydrating cleanser- see above

Bioligique Recherche P50 PIGM 400 acid exfoliator (€25 for 50ml lasts me just under 6 months, no point in getting the relatively cheaper larger sizes as this formula only has a shelf life of 6 months)

Verso Super Eye Serum (€55 I think? for 30ml lasts me over a year, this has been one of my can't live without it and will pay the hefty price tag -though cost per wear is actually low- products for years but since starting tretinoin and being able to tolerate that around the eye I'm just using it up and won't be RP)

LRP Toleriane Sensitive cream - see above

Evening 2

DHC followed by Cerave hydrating as above

Prescription Tretinoin (€17,99 for 40g lasts me about two months, technically I can get this reimbursed by my insurance from the government funded section of it but considering I'm using it for vanity's sake only I'd feel a fraud to be doing that with public money)

--

Now if I were to win the lottery tomorrow I'm not likely to change any of the above. I might occasionally buy the Bioligique Recherche Lait U cleanser as it's a comfy cleanser (€35 iirc for 250ml) but not anything amazingly superior, just really nice to use, but I already do that now and then anyhow when I restock my P50, I just don't go out of my way to RP when it's finished so I clearly don't love it that much, rather the idea of it, I suspect. I would probably be more inclined to try some treatments like Ultherapy that currently I am too sceptical about and would be pissed tossing thousands at for no results so maybe I'd care less about that if I had endless funds but I half suspect I'd still be too sceptical about it and see me holding on to my money. Maybe I'd get more crazy money facials, generally not an advocate of constant facials but there are some facials worth paying for but it's usually in the high hundreds.

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 14/10/2019 19:17

Thank you for typing that out Bo price point wise we seem to be quite similar, I wish I could get the smaller P60 but it’s not available here so I’m paying £63 for the big size, I didn’t know it only lasted 6 months though. I might dispense some for a friend to try (my tret supplier Grin) and if she gets on with it we can go halves in future.

I’m not a fan of facials but have spent quite a bit on Botox and fillers lately, the fillers have made a massive difference and I will continue with caution making sure I don’t have too much or too often, not sure about Botox. It has helped my droopy eyes but think it’s made my forehead too smooth and I’m worried about getting the frozen face look.

jedstre are you still happy with yours and are you considering more int the future?

botemp · 14/10/2019 19:33

It's just the PIGM 400 version that has a shorter shelf life, Sallie. I think the others are 12 months possibly longer, should say on the bottle.

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 14/10/2019 20:11

Just checked the bottle and phew mine is indeed 12 months Smile

Jedstre · 14/10/2019 21:06

My P50w has lasted 12 months and still some left. It still smarts a bit after application and smells the same so I’m happy to continue using until it’s finished. Not long now. Keen to try the P50 and see the difference.

Our regimes very similar Bo with the good active ingredients in there. My skin is a bit flaky this evening. I’ll need to up the moisturiser tonight.

sallie not particularly happy a few months later. My eyes seem to be back where they were so it really hasn’t lasted. I’m not sure whether to accept the inevitable ageing process or to try again and see if it lasts longer. It’s really just the slight drooping of my eyelids that I don’t like. Otherwise I’m not ageing too badly, certainly no lines and people often think I’m younger than I am. I hasten to add I don’t think I look younger. I’m not deluded, I think I look like a woman in her 40s but I often think other people aren’t that good at guessing people’s age. I can usually make a good educated guess based on skin firmness (or lack of). Someone can be ageing well in their 40s but are unlikely to actually look like they’re in their 30s, if you know what I mean.

SallieSallow · 14/10/2019 22:36

Jedstre my aesthetician told me Botox usually lasts 6 months but for some people it may only last 3 months especially first go round, but it’s accumulative so second time it will last longer and so on.

I’m fairly pleased with my eyes but my forehead bothers me, I think it’s too smooth and feels sort of ‘stiff’, I have a full fringe so it’s not obvious but it worries me a bit that I’ll freeze up completely if I have more.

I’m don’t have many lines either, and I’m not bothered about looking young as such but the drooping and sagging made me look so miserable all the time. Just having my mouth done has improved that no end though so not sure if I really need to bother with my eyes again.

SallieSallow · 17/10/2019 18:09

Used tret on Monday and skin is a bit dry & slightly flakey today, but change in weather (it’s got proper nippy here) and having heating on more is likely part to blame. Sticking to once a week for now (buffered with cerave) and slapping on the cicaplast Grin

botemp · 17/10/2019 18:14

Hmm, beware of feeling safe. Tret is a tricky bastard. I'll bet you five minutes after posting that you'll look in the mirror and shriek at the Tret face looking back at you, Sallie Wink

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 17/10/2019 19:17

I’m home for the night Bo so don’t mind a bit of tret face, it’s when I see it staring back at me in the mirrors at work that I really get the horrors Grin oh well I suppose it’s not long till Halloween 👻

ClientListQueen · 17/10/2019 20:52

@botemp any recommendations for an eye cream? Not £££
I'm stuck between inkey list caffeine, LRP redermic R or Merumaya..

botemp · 17/10/2019 21:18

What do you need it for? I generally think eye creams are a bit superfluous unless you're specifically targeting something or you need it as a base for a concealer. I know the Kiehl's avocado performs well under makeup but is that too ££?

Off topic, have you ever heard anything positive or negative about the YS Park diffuser in the curly community?

OP posts:
ClientListQueen · 17/10/2019 21:23

Something for fine lines, hydration, and because my mum has severe eye bags and I want to try and ward them off! No, the avocado one is within budget - I don't really want to go over £35 ideally
This is the merumaya https://merumaya.com/products/intensely-youthful-eye-cream

I haven't heard anything about that diffuser to be honest! The main ones I hear about are the GAMA one and Dyson of course

botemp · 17/10/2019 21:39

I've considered buying a Dyson but I'm just not interested in enriching Mr. Dyson any further. GAMA looks interesting but it does look like you actually need a lot of hair for it. May just chance it with YS Park and my unending faith in the Japanese.

Merumaya I'm a bit iffy about. It's only a few ingredients before phenyxethanol and then a really long list of ingredients that have to be in there in miniscule amounts which all the marketing is based around. Eye bags is a bit of a lost cause with eye creams, it's just genetics tbh. Caffeine temporarily takes the swelling down, so the inkey may be of interest in thet sense but it won't prevent a thing. Fine lines, retinol is an option but argeraline is supposedly really good for that area specifically but there's not a lot of products out there, can only name the Ordinary, but HA may just do the trick. Cheap and hydratingly cheerful is the Bioderma hydrabio eye gel.

OP posts:
botemp · 17/10/2019 21:42

Oh and the Cerave eye cream is meant to be pretty decent too.

OP posts:
ClientListQueen · 17/10/2019 21:48

Hmm the Niod seems to have the arge whatsit in it (fraction eye concentrate) but I don't really want to give my money to deciem
The kiehls youth dose looks interesting with retinol in

botemp · 17/10/2019 22:06

Ack no, the Kiehl's retinol isn't retinol but retinyl palmitate, you don't want that anywhere on your face. It's an ingredient where I actually feel it's okay to scaremonger about a bit as there's just too many unknowns and a better safe than sorry approach is best taken.

OP posts:
ClientListQueen · 17/10/2019 22:09

Right. Scrub that Grin
Last option https://www.cultbeauty.co.uk/peter-thomas-roth-retinol-fusion-pm-eye-cream.html

botemp · 18/10/2019 13:33

No scrubbing allowed on here Client!Shock Wink

Can't remember if it was Peter Thomas Roth or Ole Hendriksen who's a twat to his employees according to esteelaundry. Anyhow, it's kind of pricey. My beloved verso comes in cheaper/ml, in Euros it's about the same price but half the amount. PTR also contains retinyl palmitate but lower down the INCI alongside retinol further up. Meh, I'm a bit tepid as there's only really a handful of retinol eye products that get good reviews and I've never seen this mentioned, is it new?

OP posts:
ClientListQueen · 18/10/2019 13:35

I can look at the verso one Smile I don't mind if it's a bigger bottle so more £££! I think it's fairly new

botemp · 18/10/2019 13:38

Skincity is often the cheapest, and have it on offer frequently. I usually paid €50-55 for it but I think they have a skincity UK website now that has the UK RRP prices which are higher IIRC, so you need the .com site but whether they'll ship to you from there, I don't know. Verso is a fair bit more expensive in the UK.

OP posts:
ClientListQueen · 18/10/2019 13:44

Is it the serum or cream? I've found two

botemp · 18/10/2019 13:48

Serum, cream is new to me, probably for those with (locally) dry skin. Avoid if you don't have it and don't want millia.

OP posts:
ClientListQueen · 18/10/2019 13:52

I've managed a discount code on look fantastic which gets me 30ml for £52

Jedstre · 18/10/2019 13:58

@ClientListQueen I’ve ordered recently from skincity. They have 10% off over £75 spend which would work for eye serum
