Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

(I think mine's most like the middle one colour wise. I'll shut up now. 🤐 )

EnidButton · 12/10/2019 01:08

Or maybe the third now I look again...depends on the light.
The third pic is a good one to show I think.

Definitely shutting up now.

botemp · 12/10/2019 10:24

Me too Sallie, I always wonder how these influencers recommending ££££ products they've tried for a fortnight can sleep at night. Even at the lower end of my recommendations I always hope people aren't coming out disappointed.

Karcheer, I use Christophe Robin. I'm not a fan of recommending hair products though as it's so individual. I've found this brand works for me but it's pricey. I can get a sample and it lasts me forever (I buy one shampoo a year and the conditioning mask I use as conditioner that I bought this time last year is down a 1/3) but I don't think it would be that amazing of a difference maker for everyone.

Enid, I seem to associate 🍌 with blowjobs Blush surely I'm not alone in this. Granted I still struggle to understand how the 🍆 became the designated penis emoji 🤷

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 12/10/2019 10:52

I think an unpeeled banana is rather phallic but the semi peeled emoji one doesn’t have the same effect which is probably where the aubergine came in 🍆

Great minds think alike Enid I’ll definitely go with the third one though I really like the other two as well. I have some other photos but think they’re too light brown/caramelly to be realistic for me without serious pre-lightening.

And quadruple crown for you 👑 👑👑👑 Grin

Karcheer I have a very dry scalp that gets easily irritated/itchy so stick to eucerin shampoo. I use a garnier leave in conditioner on the lengths, followed by serum on the very ends.

CJDoesTheJackal · 12/10/2019 13:24

Thank you all for the birthday wishes. Party tonight - just a gathering of about 40 of us in a local pub for some drinks and grub.

I swear by Pureology Hydrate shampoo and conditioner. I've been using it for years (after using Kerastase for years). I've heard really good things about Function of Beauty too.

ClientListQueen · 12/10/2019 14:55

I follow curly girl so I'm conditioner only Smile
My hair LOVES broo conditioner (it has loads of protein in) and also moogoo
I use jessicurl and boucleme for styling products

EnidButton · 12/10/2019 16:41

No-one wants a semi peeled one 😱

CJ Have a wonderful time. A do in the pub sounds perfect! 🎂

TantricTwist · 13/10/2019 15:19

Happy Birthday CJ Wine

Not you as well Queen that reddit site / whatever the other one was called sound awful.

The shampoo I use is Alberto Bahlsam in Apple or Mango. I rarely blow dry my hair or use product. I just wash and go. I do dye my hair so like using the Clairol conditioner that comes with that. I've tried all sorts but always come back to the Alberto. My hair is long and fine.

My skin is happy and I'm still enjoying using Eve Lom's radiance essence Time retreat. Other than that my routine hasn't really changed.

TantricTwist · 13/10/2019 15:20

I think when the 🍆 was first used the 🍌 wasn't an emoji yet.

SallieSallow · 13/10/2019 15:32

Hope you had a great night CJ 🍾 🥂 🍷

My skin is happy too but I’m about to reintroduce tret, the unopened tube I got expires in March 2020 so it’s use it or lose it....

botemp · 13/10/2019 19:00

What concentration do you have Sallie?

Random bananas are everywhere. I was in the supermarket today and they're selling father's day cards Confused and one was a photo of a peeled banana looking just like the emoji but the outer skin was coloured bright purple and it said 'go bananas' on the front and a generic father's day message inside. I'm so confused, what does it all mean?

Just thought I’d do an update on routine.

Morning Jan Marini bio glycolic cleanser. I like this. Similar texture to cerave or the LRP hydrating cleanser.
Followed by Timeless Vit C (not in photo- can’t be bothered to go to fridge) then LRP toleriane fluide (now discontinued) then SPF. Usually Biore bright milk but formula changed last year (for the worse) so I’ve got canmake mermaid one to try.

Evening Simple non oily eye makeup remover, first cleanse-oil cleanser Hado Labo followed by LRP hydrating gentle cleanser.
Retinoid- Differin or more recently I’ve started Tretinoin (retirides bought last year in Spain and needs using). Using tret twice a week. Some flakiness but not too bad. Moisturiser-LRP toleriane double repair moisturiser. I’ve got toleriane riche I can use if dryness from tret.

P50W a couple of times a week at night when not using retinoid/tret. I’ve got P50 on stand by once w finished.

That’s it really. I’ve got a few face masks on the go I might use once a week.

SallieSallow · 13/10/2019 19:32

Bo it’s the 0.05%

I think I’m going to use it every 3rd night buffered with moisturiser to start with as I still want to keep P50 in the routine so I was thinking one night tret, one night P50 and one night with neither and see how I go from there.

jedstre your routine is similar to mine so that’s helpful wrt to slotting tret in but I’m not sure how to fit HA in, previously I used it after tret and before moisturiser but if I’m mixing tret with moisturiser not sure how that will work. Also not sure when to use Vichy thermal water spray on my tret nights.

Karcheer · 13/10/2019 19:36

All going well here still, my skin is definitely less flaky and my spots do seem to have reduce a bit.
I was near a Deciem shop yesterday but i didn't know what to get, so didn't get anything...

i asked Cult Beauty what they recommended and this is what they suggested...

I really like the Skyn Iceland cleanser for a gentle pore cleansing wash with natural Salicylic Acid, it suits all skin types even dry and the range focuses on stressed skin using natural ingredients (Vegan and Natural). You could use this in the morning and a more nourishing cleanser in the evening such as the Tri Balm or Drunk Elephant Slaai

I would also consider introducing a Retinol if you want something to make a difference to signs of ageing. Drunk Elephant have one or Retinoid such as REN (both animal-friendly and without synthetics, parabens etc)

If you are using retinol/retinoid you will need to make sure you use sunscreen every day. The Decree one is mineral in a clear spray form and although it is pricey, I have never used such a good mineral sunscreen. (this is a

For your moisturiser, I would focus on restore and repair with Pure Cloud Cream or
Lala Retro cream and perhaps an oil as well at night The Ordinary Marula is really inexpensive.

I am happy to recommend options of masks or exfoliating treatments too but I would start with the overhaul as the products you have mentioned may not be doing you any favours anymore.

Thoughts?

Is P50 like P20? or something else?

botemp · 13/10/2019 20:05

Cult beauty? That routine is not going to suit your previously mentioned budget.

A cleanser really doesn't need to cost much and you don't need any bells and whistles as it mostly goes down the drain.

I would suggest skipping retinol and going straight to prescription strength retinoids as you already have signs of ageing as well as persistent congestion but considering you may have mild rosacea it's good to have it seen by a dermatologist first and that would go for retinol too. The online dermatologist service Dermatica sends you prescription retinoid cream monthly and guides you through it, you fill in a questionnaire and send in pictures. You can stop and restart any time you want (the cream will last longer than a month). It's around £22 a month IIRC.

I always suggest seeking out an SPF that works best for you and being prepared to pay for it in favour of other skin products but you do have to make it feasible. A 50ml bottle will last you a little over a month if using the proper amount, half that time if you're doing neck and decolletage. I haven't looked up the mineral sunscreen but if a cult beauty employee is saying it's expensive, I'm a bit scared to see the actual price Shock aside from that a spray is a really poor form of application and it's impossible to know you're applying the right amount, it just won't protect you properly. Considering you're using a Clarins sunscreen without issue I don't foresee you struggling with SPFs and needing to pay an absolute fortune for a very specific sensitive skin one.

Moisturiser is another that doesn't need to be spent heavily on, all you want it to do is moisturise and suit your skin type. If you're very dry you may have use for an oil but most people won't see any true benefit from it but it feels psychologically nice, like most of the CB product suggestions.

P50 is a chemical exfoliator, mostly PHA, some AHAs and a bit of BHA. It's a bit of a cult beauty (not the shop) product, I absolutely love it and call it foetus skin in a bottle but it's not for everyone.

OP posts:
botemp · 13/10/2019 20:16

Sallie, I'd start with once a week to start, maybe for the first time. I'd also caution with the neck, it's more sensitive so if I were to do it all from scratch I'd go slower with that. I have a horizontal crease in my neck and a lot of product settled in there at some point just from movement (I now just do that area before I go to sleep as there's less movement) and it got really irritated and peeled horribly and was quite raw after. Cicaplast is your friend.

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 13/10/2019 20:27

Karcheer I agree with Bo some of those brands they’ve suggested (drunk elephant and REN) are very pricey plus I googled the decree spf and it’s £75 Shock so if you followed all their suggestions that would be one heck of a spend!

P50 is indeed amazing stuff put probably not suitable if you have rosacea, especially if you’re also looking to introduce a retinol.

Talking of expensive beauty routines the only U.K. website that sells P50 suggested one for me that cost around £600 if I remember correctly, I ignored them Grin

SallieSallow · 13/10/2019 20:31

Thanks Bo yes I think you’re right that maybe once a week might be best to start with, I’ve been impatient with it before which caused flaking and I gave up on it. Slow and steady this time! My neck is very sensitive and prone to itchy rashes so I never use Ret, tret or actives on it. And I am very well stocked up on cicaplast Grin

botemp · 13/10/2019 20:38

£75 and half of it dissipates into the atmosphere before it gets on your face ShockShock is it even SPF50? I'm going to guess it's SPF 30 and considering due to user error you're usually getting a third to half of the stated protection, I'm guessing the spray is giving you about SPF 5-10.

If it was cheaper I could maybe get on board with it as a top up spray over makeup as those are never perfect but better than nothing. But that just sounds like an expensive can of air (or butane?).

OP posts:
Jedstre · 13/10/2019 21:08

sallie could you apply HA then a bit of moisturiser then wait and apply tret later?

I’ve been applying a bit of moisturiser (LRP toleriane I listed) waiting an hour then adding tret with a further top up of moisturiser before bed. Moisturiser contains niacinamide which helps barrier function thereby helpful with tolerating tret. So far this seems to be working for me and not as flaky as I feared (although I do have an oily skin although it can easily get dehydrated)

Jedstre · 13/10/2019 21:12

Also to add Sallie I think worst flakiness is day 3-4 after using tret so could use every 4th day potentially. That’s what I’ve done anyway and been fine and it’s my first time of using, although been using retinoids prior for a couple of years now so certainly some tolerance.

botemp · 13/10/2019 21:18

Yes day 3 was the worst for me too, if I remembered I'd use P50 in the morning and that made it less of a flakey mess midday, annoyingly it looked fine in the morning and then I'd look like an extra from a horror movie later on in the day. I'd also be prepared to forget about makeup on that day, you look better without makeup than with on those days, which again only becomes apparent when the flaking sets in.

OP posts:
Karcheer · 13/10/2019 21:33

I actually didn’t think the prices were too bad, I just wasn’t sure they were right, as obviously I’d spoken about my skin with you all more.
Thank you so much for the info on the retinoids - I really have no clue.
I’m going to carry on with the new moisturiser for awhile and slowly add things in, I don’t want to upset the apple cart.

I will run out of the Clinique 1.0 toner fairly soon, so will either need to replace that or rebuy... do you think the retinoid should be my next step (in a couple of weeks)...

botemp · 13/10/2019 21:52

I'd switch to Paula's Choice 2% BHA perfecting liquid. You can use it less (I'm assuming you're using the Clinique daily or even twice daily) and just use it on congested areas. You can get the trial size first it'll last for a good few months.

Yes, if the new moisturiser is working well for you and you get yourself an SPF 50 that you like and can use without problems you can progress to a retinoid in a couple of weeks.

It's a bit late now, but if it would be helpful I can post my current routine tomorrow with the prices and how long they last me so you sort of have an idea of spend. I don't need to spend as little as possible and occasionally I do splash out on something expensive for the formulation but that's mostly down to the fact that I have very finicky skin but it's rare because a lot of it is just marketing and sensorial.

OP posts:
Karcheer · 13/10/2019 22:06

@botemp that’s exactly what I meant regarding budget, I don’t mind paying for something if it’s good, but I don’t want to pay a lot if I’m just paying for a huge marketing budget.
Yes, I use the Clinique in the morning and evening, I’ll order the Paula’s choice sample tomorrow.
