Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

I’m not sure Karcheer which one do you use? I had a Clinique toner years ago that was like paint stripper, I used it to clean a hair dye stain from a windowsill and it did literally take the paint off Shock what was in that particular one or if it’s still made I have no idea, I went through a massive Clinique phase and just used all their stuff without doing any research on what it actually was or what it was supposed to do Blush

ClientList I thought you’d used a kitchen cleaner on your face until I read that post properly Grin

SallieSallow · 09/10/2019 14:50

Just seen Bo’s post, presume my paint stripper toner has been taken off the market or reformulated by now...I hope so anyway!

botemp · 09/10/2019 14:55

Yeah Client, my initial reading was a recommendation for fairy liquid too 😂

The new Clinique toners aren't laden with alcohol and other industrial strength ingredients anymore but I think that's pretty much rendered them into innocuous water instead. Maybe some pH adjusting skills going on, but a bit Confused basically.

OP posts:
Karcheer · 09/10/2019 15:28

I’ve ordered the Eucerin Face cream and the Clinique balm. They should arrive tomorrow.
I’ll continue with the double cleans with the cream cleanser and the water one in the evenings, and start using my spfs... I’ll keep you updated :)

ClientListQueen · 09/10/2019 15:33

Oops SmileGrin
It's this one I've been using
https://beautykitchen.co.uk/products/abyssinian-oil-prime-time-cream-cleanser

SallieSallow · 09/10/2019 16:27

That looks a bit better than Cif ClientList Grin

I think the Clinique toner I used must have been super high in alcohol, I remember it smelling like nail polish remover. This is going back at least 15 years though so I’m sure it’s nothing like that now.

ClientListQueen · 09/10/2019 16:34

I did notice that 10-0-6 is for sale again if anyone remembers that stuff Shock

botemp · 09/10/2019 17:10

This is beginning to sound like a Mrs Hinch go to bed with me piss take.

Makeup wipe: bathroom wipe
Second cleanse: fairy wash liquid
Manual exfoliator: CIF
Very Astringent Toner: Windex (or whatever the UK equivalent is, the blue window cleaner)
Serum: Zoflora
Face cream: Furniture polish

Bonus product, some Pledge as an illuminating primer.

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 09/10/2019 18:57

OMG I remember that 10-0-06 stuff, I used it in a routine with Anne French cleanser, lucky my face didn’t fall off!

I’d have probably been better off with Bo’s Mrs Hinch Routine, I’m especially loving the zoflora serum and Pledge illuminating primer Grin

EnidButton · 09/10/2019 19:45

Karch my DH has slight rosacea (just the redness part of it and sensitive skin), he gets on really well with the Eucerin urea moisturiser.

I've done my usual Autumn stock up on my solid favourites. I got a bit carried away buying make up bits. So no more beauty spending for a week while. Repurchased Nars creamy concealer and the Charlotte Tilbury one (even though I hate the weird applicator. The colour is very good.) New stuff includes Bobbi B eyeshadow sticks and Becca under eye corrector. Really like both.

Also I had 5 inches cut off my hair last week. It's armpit length so nothing dramatic but feels much much healthier. Had three treatments on it whilst I was there and a colour. It's been a year! 🍌😱

Anyway I'm feeling much more myself and put together again. Albeit with a raging headache.

(Btw are Charlotte Til counter assistants all so disinterested and sour faced?* The ones on the one I went to looked like they loathed their jobs and spoke like robots.

*bit harsh but I can't think of the right word right now.)

EnidButton · 09/10/2019 19:45

No idea why that random banana is in there. 🍌

SallieSallow · 09/10/2019 20:13

Grin at the 🍌 Enid

I’m glad you like your hair, I had about that much cut off mine earlier this year and I’m so much happier with it. I’ve even got brave enough to consider having it coloured professionally (instead of my usual box dyes) but my hairdresser is off work after having an op so I’ll have to wait.

EnidButton · 09/10/2019 22:14

I took lots of Pinterest pics of the hair colour I like rather than try to describe it or look at the tiny swatches they show you. Finally have a 'French' brown without any red in it and it's very close to my own colour (but darker) so looks right. So pics might help you. Smile My hair was getting to be hard work when washing etc, this isn't loads different but easier. I think it was your post that made me get a good chop.

SallieSallow · 10/10/2019 00:30

I didn’t want to have mine cut Enid you know how precious I was about my hair Grin but I had no choice as it got all matted due to not looking after it properly when my Mum was in hospital. Mine took so long to wash and dry I just didn’t have time to do it when all that was going on. I’m actually able to properly style it now though it’s still prone to frizz it’s much, much more manageable.

Do you have a photo of the colour you asked for as that sounds what I want, cool brown with no red. I was thinking of having a lighter brown/caramel bayalage as well but that might be a bit ambitious as my hair is naturally very dark.

Pic attached is the sort of thing I’m thinking of, my hair is around that length and I can get those waves with the airwrap but I have a fringe. And sadly do not look anything like that model Sad

Really enjoying the Chantecaille mascara Bo. Got a £50 voucher today from work (50th birthday today). Not sure what I'll buy. I'm happy with my routine and products. Not sure I want to introduce anything new so I will probably just wait until I run out of sth.

Tsmummy08 · 11/10/2019 08:03

Hello all, it's been a while and I've got some SPF updates for you but wanted to say how shocked I am at the stories of Bo and Queen being stalked and talked about on Reddit. WTF! I don't understand the mentality, truly.... it's depressing and I'm so sorry!

Enid well done on the hair! I had 8 inches cut off in May and kept it short but have decided to start growing it again, at least to shoulder length (it was about chin length). Friends/DH said it was great/suited me etc but I didn't feel like "me". And I visited the CT counter in Leeds Harvey Nicks over the summer and the girls were great, I came away with the correct colour of Hollywood filter (4) to replace the one I'd bought online (3 - too light). Maybe they were having a bad day - or maybe it's location-dependent!

I've been trying the Japanese SPFs I ordered last month and will attempt to post some pics/review later...

Karcheer · 11/10/2019 15:44

Hi all,
I used the new moisturiser last night and back on my Clinique balm and been using the spf for two days now, and no adverse effects.

So that’s good :)

I really need a haircut/highlights it was definitely some time in the spring I had it cut and highlighted... I hate having it cut.

I only ever use Lancôme mascara have used them for years and years.

SallieSallow · 11/10/2019 17:15

Happy belated birthday CJ 🎉🥂 🎂 hope you had a lovely 50th!

I’ve never been to a CT counter as department stores make me claustrophobic/panicky and I find beauty counter assistants in general a bit intimidating. I take a punt ordering on line and whilst I’ve made a couple of errors I can usually get a good match as long as I steer clear of anything with pink undertones.

Looking forward to hearing about the SPFs Tsmummy and good news about the moisturiser Karcheer Smile

botemp · 11/10/2019 17:41

Happy belated birthday CJ 🎊🎉, glad to hear you like the Chantecaille mascara I was looking at something at SpaceNK the other, maybe silk hair wraps to wear to bed? Could have been cult beauty?

I'm sticking the random 🍌 in the next title, randomly, just cause Grin (let's hope it's not some pervy bat signal)

Enid, WRT CT, she didn't come out well in the esteelaundry expose, allegedly she's highly abusive to her staff and the work atmosphere is toxic all the way down. Allegedly other products (from competitors) are used in photographs rather than the product they're selling. So my guess is either the counter staff is feeling the heat from above in light of these allegations or they're a bit fed up being asked about it by others all day when there's no truth to it.

I got my hair cut Wednesday, still happy with the new hairdresser. They now have olaplex but he was very honest that it would be a waste of money for me so it's good I never actually went ahead and booked it when I considered it several times. I'm thinking of hair colour as well, I sort of have a natural balayage going, always happens in the summer but it's not as pronounced as a painted ballayage but not sure I want to pay for the real thing as I consider it a summer thing, not sure what I'd like instead though.

Thanks Tsn, looking forward to the SPF reporting.

karcheer, good to hear things are going well so far.

I've been using the Cerave hydrating cleanser for a few days now and I have to say I really like it. It leaves absolutely no tightness, it's really unique to me. Karcheer, when the neutrogena runs out I'd consider switching to this, it's really great with dehydrated skin.

OP posts:
botemp · 11/10/2019 17:43

Oh wait I remember now CJ it was the aquis hair turban I was looking at at SpaceNK but then I read hair turbans give tension baldness so I lost interest. This really is all rather useless information, apols.

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 11/10/2019 19:17

I’m glad you like the cerave cleanser Bo I always feel bad when I recommend something in here and someone hates it, though at least it’s not in the price range of chantecaille mascara Grin

And glad your haircut went well too, nice to see all the hair happiness here lately after our previous traumas (hope I haven’t cursed us now!)

Karcheer · 11/10/2019 21:09

What shampoo and conditioner are you all using? I used to be religious about Kerastase but I’m currently using a Charles worthington extra body shampoo and an Aldi Aussie dupe (which is making my hair greasy!)..

EnidButton · 12/10/2019 00:56

Happy birthday CJ 🥳 Cake Hope it's a good one and a fabulous year ahead.

Sallie that pic is actually almost exactly the colour and cut except my parting is more to the side but otherwise it's like that when I wave it. I'll try to find the pics in a moment if I haven't stupidly deleted them. I know it was a Wella semi (demi?) colour with a level 6 base.

Karcheer my phobia is having a hair cut. Yet at the same time I hate to feel un 'polished'. It's not a helpful combination. Grin I'm using some Wella Salon professionals samples atm. If I get on with those I'm going to get the full sizes. I'll let you know. They have a wide range for different hair types/issues so could be good. Spendy though.

bo I think perv bat signal is the once innocent aubergine 🍆 Let's not corrupt the beloved banana too. 🍌
Very glad you like your hair. Your colour sounds great. (We'll have to close down the Art gallery.) I had heard some things about CT. Bad feeling can easily filter right down to staff at the face of it.

TS Your newly grown hair will be in good condition after the big cut. I think it's a good thing now and then. Thanks for the CT info. Glad you had a good experience. I do think it might be location. Or perhaps just that day.

EnidButton · 12/10/2019 01:01

Sallie I think it was these ones but I've deleted the particular section on my Pinterest now. So they're mixed in with the red shades I was considering too. But basically a level 6 brown leaning towards ashy/cool with no red in it.
