Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Is it like the inside of an old lady bag smelly? I'm taking note to avoid it no matter how miraculous it is.

I have been considering trying some Briogeo, will lift my SpaceNK boycott and see if they have the travel sizes to try. Apparently the banana range is very good but the idea of my hair smelling like banana and coconut really puts me off.

I've heard great stuff about their don't despair, repair or whatever it's called!
It's like incense actually now I've been sat here smelling for a while. It's not helped because I have boucleme gel on which is quite scented anyway

botemp · 10/09/2019 19:57

I was thinking about the rosarco leave in milk and potentially the don't despair mask, but I wonder if that may be too heavy for me, but worth a try. Potentially the cucumber shampoo and conditioner. Had also looked at Virtue (not CG) but I'm not really convinced about its human hair keratin spiel, I suspect it's just silicones at work.

Well my hair looks lovely. My colleague smelt my hair and said "you smell like one of those quirky shops that sell crystals and witch stuff"

onemorecakeplease · 12/09/2019 12:46

Going to doc tomorrow

Am I asking for zineryt or Duac? As doc mentioned both those on the phone.

Which do you recommend? My forehead is now a massive of tiny pimples under the skin and my chin so sore and has massive lumps! . I'm so sick of it!

botemp · 12/09/2019 13:12

Cake, Duac is an antibiotic combined with benzyl peroxide. Zineryt is an antibiotic only (a different one to the one in Duac). Benzyl peroxide isn't all that pleasant to use but it does work, for many it is a bit of a last resort product.

I think it's probably worth asking after adapalene (brand name Differin, a synthetic gentler alternative to tretinoin), keep in mind you will in all likelihood have a 'worse before it gets better' stage, best eased by applying it over moisturiser and introducing it gradually. Would be helpful to also have Zineryt alongside it for topical use on any eruptions.

Queen, ah probably contains patchouli oil or similar. My mother had a perfume with it which always made me want to gag. Thankfully she only wore it on special occasions.

Thanks botemp

Unfortunately I've got Dr Useless tomorrow so unless you tell him exactly what you want him to prescribe he is a bit clueless and tends to get a book out and go 'hmm right' a lot!

I just want my dalacin back 😢

botemp · 12/09/2019 18:55

In that case I'd ask for both? Zineryt is more of a topical to temper the tiny volcanos and Duac is more an all over product. No idea if they can be used together but your Dr will know more. Duac is the active ingredient in Dalacin plus BP so hopefully it'll be as good as Dalacin on its own for you.

You can get Differin through the Boots and Superdrug acne clinics if Dr Useless gets you nowhere but see how you get on with the Duac first.

He gave me zineryt and the Yasmin contraceptive pill which I've been on before as my skin is so much worse around my period. It's also got something in it which should also help with my PMDD so fingers crossed!

I took Yasmin for years before having dc and my skin was always lovely!

SallieSallow · 15/09/2019 11:32

Fingers crossed One 🤞

I found an IT cosmetics eyebrow pencil in my stash so going to use that up (have used it before and found it quite good) whilst I investigate something else. I can’t work out from the descriptions on line which is the darkest colour in the Chanel ones so might have to brave a department store Shock I’ve also seen an urban decay one that looks promising but again can’t get a proper idea of the shades online Confused

botemp · 18/09/2019 09:38

Don't mean to scare monger, and I don't think the video is (it's by a cosmetic dermatologist YouTube channel that is informative on procedures, primarily to market their own services and help you find a good one if you're not near him, quite balanced and scientific about it usually) but I did find it an interesting watch and though I have always been on the 'it's not for me' side when it comes to Botox and fillers this did really cement it for me/if I do ever consider it I will be going very carefully with it and avoiding certain areas. Comment section and their experiences is interesting to read too, many got excess sagging in the jowels and puffiness in the tear throughs from remnant filler that should technically not be there.

Hope the Yasmin works out for you cake, it is known to help with skin, I had thought you were the poster just coming off BC so was a bit confused for a second but glad it's a good option for you.

@SallieSallow You might like the Glossier Brow Flick because it's very fine and detailed.

TantricTwist · 18/09/2019 17:00

Has anyone tried the Eve Lom Time Retreat Radiance Essence?

I bought some today which I'm going to use in the evenings after cleansing and before my serum. It has some sort of Retinol derivative in it so I'll use on days I'm not using acid which I'm only using about once a week now anyway.

I just felt I needed something new and different in my routine, which I love and works great, but want to try something else.

TantricTwist · 18/09/2019 17:24

Or has anyone tried any kind of essence at all. The Hado Labo is an essence yes?

botemp · 18/09/2019 17:29

I wouldn't classify Hada Labo as an essence, it's more viscous than essences and it has a different purpose (hydration vs. enhancing penetration of other products). I've tried a couple, liked the famous Missha (dupe of SK-ii) one but they changed formulation on it and it wasn't the same. It's nice and there was a bit of brightening but I don't consider them essential at all.

TantricTwist · 18/09/2019 18:51

Thanks Bo I'll try mine out later and see how I get on and fingers crossed I'm not sensitive to it. It's meant to be quite oily apparently. I'll update with consistency later and then in a few weeks with results.

@SallieSallow you might also like this Benefit 'Precisely, my brow pencil

SallieSallow · 18/09/2019 19:23

Thanks Tant I’ve been using that benefit one but it’s actually a bit too fine, I think the super thin ones are more for filling in sparse brows rather than adding brows where none exist Grin

I haven’t used any essences so no help with that.

I’ll check out that video thanks Bo or maybe I shouldn’t seeing as it’s a bit too late in my case having already had Botox and fillers Grin

TantricTwist · 18/09/2019 19:36

Oh well that's good then if it's even too thin means there's definitely one out there for you SallieSallow Maybe you need a couple of different products at the same time with different thicknesses.

I've just cleansed with Dr Sams Flawless cleanser followed by a spritz of LRP Thermal water then a few drops of the Eve Lom essence.

I won't lie it is a gorgeous product from a gorgeous bottle. It's not oily or greasy thankfully, it pats on and glides on nicely. It's quite hard to describe actually, maybe like a silicone but a bit drier ie less slip but enough to pat in quickly.

CJDoesTheJackal · 18/09/2019 20:27

I'm getting on really with the Neostrata retinol. For 4 weeks I've been using it every other evening, mixed in with either the Cerave night lotion or Bioderma. Tonight I put the Neostrata on alone and it's a little tingly in places. I'll see how it is over the next few days.

3 weeks tomorrow I turn 50 and I'm really happy with how my skin looks :-)

I'll take a look at that video 'Bo'. I don't think Botox is for me, but I've had fillers around the mouth.

SallieSallow · 18/09/2019 20:47

I’ve just watched the video, I think I’m fairly safe as my practioner very much errs on the side of caution/less is more & some of the things they were saying in that video she has said to me.

I need to start thinking about adding retinol back in to my routine now summer is over but before we get into deep winter. I’ll probably go for tret buffered with moisturiser. Bo are you still doing this and what ratio of tret to moisturiser did/do you use?

Tant it’s a hard life having no brows Sad as anything too thick looks ridiculous/obviously drawn on but so does anything too fine and I’ve no hairs for brows or gels to cling to. I keep swithering about microblading but worried I’d end up with them too thick and heavy looking.

YesQueen · 18/09/2019 20:51

I love my micropigmentation on my brows! Picked up a beauty kitchen cleanser for half price in the hospital chemist (random) which is lovely
I've ordered some more ABH dipbrow gel as it's so quick in the morning
Playing with makeup today, my skin is finally behaving

SallieSallow · 19/09/2019 20:47

Your brows look amazing YesQueen but with mine being so dark (black) I wouldn’t want to go that thick. I just want tops and tails adding with no thickness but not sure if that’s possible.

JDSTER · 19/09/2019 21:40

I skipped through that video but got the gist. Interestingly the dentist who did my Botox said she’s thinking of not doing filler anymore and that it can be unpredictable.

SallieSallow · 19/09/2019 22:45

I don’t want to give up my filler, it’s made such a difference to my droopy mouth. I will be careful how much I have and how often though and I don’t think the nurse I see would let me overdo it anyway.

YesQueen · 19/09/2019 22:48

@SallieSallow you can, definitely if you have someone decent. They can just add on to what you have Smile
Weirdly I am actually growing out my brow hair a little as I want to go slightly thicker, the actual tattoo is thinner but I keep the brow hair just outside it so I can add a gel and have them thicker or leave as is to make them look thinner Wink
