🐌 Fantastic Skincare: Shitting About All Day Discussing Co Dictionary

Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

I've missed the colours and seasons talk. I've always had natural affinity with colour so it's not something that would interest me, Enid. I'd completely forgotten about the seasons talk until I came to MN, it was something my mother's friends did in the early 90s, maybe? It really was a momentary thing and then suddenly they were all so happy to be liberated from the limitations of it and it fell out of favour.

I'm sure it's useful if you're absolutely clueless with colour but I do suspect it's a bit old fashioned as the dye and fabric industry has come along so far in the last ten years alone so a lot of hues are designed to flatter as many as possible as that's just business sense. Years ago, as much as I wanted to buy yellow things it always looked awful but in recent years I've managed to buy quite a bit of it.

If I had to self assess I'm probably a winter but a quick Google shows me a lot of those colours would drain me in winter light. Especially the plums, burgundy and purples and that's probably because I'm mixed race. I'm v pale with olive/golden undertones that are not typical for a Caucasian looking person, so I don't think the standard formula of those colour systems would apply to me in the way they would for others.

Thanks Enid, I’ll definitely ask about Zineryt. I had hoped I’d ‘grown out’ of acne but obviously not. I don’t particularly want to be on the pill but it’s preferable to having these huge spots and is the only thing that really works for me

EnidButton · 07/09/2019 16:19

One Zineryt is prescription (in the uk). It's a topical antibiotic.

cloud Just a thought, the topical treatment you were using also comes as a lotion apparently and I'm not sure that's been discontinued (or it's the other way around and the liquid one is still available). I could be wrong but have a check when you can.

EnidButton · 07/09/2019 16:20

Sorry got mixed up! That last bit is to One.

EnidButton · 07/09/2019 16:24

Yes I meant the lotion might still be available.

botemp · 07/09/2019 17:10

The alternative brand of Zineryt is Inderm. You can order it from Farmaline Belgium they ship to the UK for free over £60/75 (pick up point/home), not sure what the costs are below that. There is a UK version of the site but they don't seem to stock Inderm on that one.

OP posts:
botemp · 07/09/2019 17:13

Just checked out of curiosity, you can also buy Zineryt from the same site.

OP posts:
botemp · 07/09/2019 17:14

Should stress, especially since it's prescription only in the UK, that it's not to be used long term without medical supervision.

Thanks I've got dalacin lotion but it's useless

Will ask gp for zineryt

onemorecakeplease · 07/09/2019 21:10

It was the intolerance clinic who said I was deficient in vit B so I decided to get a supplement
She said I didn't have to but I thought I would try it as I've been so tired

I bought a Roche possay toleriane cleanser and the moisturiser - they were on the adult acne thread and it came with a spritz thing making it a 3 step. Probably won't use the spritz thing just the cleaner and the moisturiser

I hope I've ordered the right thing?

Now I've seen a photo of the zineryt I have a feeling I might have tried that already. For some reason I knew it was in a yellow box before I saw the pic....looks familiar.

botemp · 07/09/2019 21:23

Toleriane is fine and often recommended on here so no worries Smile Sorry, it's been a while since I looked at the info sheets and I was convinced I only ever put product recs in the compromised skin barrier sheet.

Are you vegetarian/vegan that a vitamin b deficiency showed up?

OP posts:
onemorecakeplease · 07/09/2019 21:42

No, just dairy intolerant.

However I've been shattered lately so she tested vit levels.

I tried some Paula's choice liquid exfoliant recently too but that did not go well! So if anyone wants a bottle....! PM me

onemorecakeplease · 07/09/2019 21:43

Thank you for all your help and for the fact sheets. So good of you!

EnidButton · 08/09/2019 02:55

Depending how low your vitamin B levels are and which ones, you might need a b12 injection. GP would have to do the test though.

SallieSallow · 10/09/2019 18:39

I’m the market for a new eyebrow pencil of anyone has any recs? It has to be a pencil as I don’t have any brow hairs for a powder or mascara to cling to Sad

My perricone no makeup eye shadow has arrived, it doesn’t show up on me at all but it’s got skincare properties and does seem to make my eyelids slightly smoother so will keep using. I was going to order their no makeup bronzer but not sure now as it’s quite pricey.

YesQueen · 10/09/2019 18:45

I actually really used to like Rimmel because their hazel shade isn't red toned like so many others

Innisfree microscara (or something like that!) is my latest purchase, teeny wand for lower lashes and £4

botemp · 10/09/2019 19:06

Had to share this here, but I don't think I'll be recommending anyone to stop from fapping (if I'm using that term correctly) to ward off adult acne anytime soon Hmm www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2019/sep/09/whats-causing-women-to-join-the-nofap-movement

I like the Chanel brow pencils, Sallie, they're actually not crazily expensive (the original ones) as they're unchanged since forever. Although the new blade one can draw really nice fine lines to mimic hairs and it's waterproof so it doesn't budge. I have dense brows and prefer the original but the blade would be good for sparser brows. In a pinch the Essence ones aren't bad either if you need a cooler brown colour, other budget brands all seem to be warm.

Quick question, I'll be in London in two weeks, is there an It Cosmetics counter or shop somewhere? I'm getting annoyed with a rather large PIE on my cheek which was from my initial Tret purge 6 months ago. It's not really that noticeable but the cooler autumn light seems to highlight it more and make it look a bit like a bit of dirt Hmm So contemplating the CC cream just to have the option as I know it covers well without being too heavy a formulation. I'd probably prefer a concealer but that never really has any longevity in that area on me.

YesQueen · 10/09/2019 19:12

@botemp I know Selfridges stocks it if that helps

botemp · 10/09/2019 19:14

Thanks Queen that's helpful I was planning on stopping in there already.

OP posts:
YesQueen · 10/09/2019 19:20

I'm sat with a Vatika egg protein mask on my hair and boy does it smell Grin it's a properly heavy perfume type Envy

JDSTER · 10/09/2019 19:23

A lot of Boots stores stock It cosmetics Bo which you’ll know doubt pass while you’re out and about.

SallieSallow · 10/09/2019 19:26

My brows are tiny but they’re jet black so deffo don’t want anything red toned! I’ll have a look at Chanel and rimmel but the blade Chanel one sounds good seeing as it’s waterproof and yes I do have very sparse brows Grin

Shock Grin Shock at the NoFap movement- whatever will they think of next....I’ve never heard it called fapping before either Confused

botemp · 10/09/2019 19:28

By smelly I assumed you were going to say it smelt of rotten eggs Queen not that overwhelming perfume is much better. Are you still happy with the Dyson diffuser?

Boots is good to know too, JDSTER but I assume it's not all of them just the larger ones. Can you swatch in there. Although I think I'll just head to Selfridges but useful to know Boots sell it too, means I could potentially pick it up at Duty Free instead and save myself the hassle with ziplock bags.

OP posts:
botemp · 10/09/2019 19:32

Chanel has a really good black that's not harsh that's why I like it, Sallie. I'm a dark cool brown just a shade away from black and other pencils are either Groucho Marx black and slug like or granite and a bit odd looking.

The word fapping makes my stomach churn (not in a good way), it conjures up a really unpleasant sound for whatever reason. Really struggle to see how you'd use that in a sentence and not cringe. "So I was fapping about the other day..."

OP posts:
YesQueen · 10/09/2019 19:33

Yes, very happy with it! My hair still takes ages to dry but I have v low porosity hair
Definitely not eggs, I smell like I've been dunked in pot pourri and dragged through a perfume store. My hair best look epic after this
