🐌 Fantastic Skincare: Shitting About All Day Discussing Co Dictionary

Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

I got a shit response Bo. "Sorry, we always try to ensure customers get our freshest products. We will investigate" sort of bollox. Didn't even ask which store!!!! I replied to say "do you not want to know which store?" to which there was no reply.

And actually the original post (a message on what was their most recent post) was there for about 5 hours before anyone responded even though there were only a handful of messages so not hundreds. In the end I sent them a DM saying "does noone check your social media?". I tagged DE, Sali Hughes and CH. Not a peep from any of them.

Very disappointing

botemp · 05/09/2019 12:00

That's really disappointing to hear CJ, it's put me off Drunk Elephant as a whole. SpaceNK and their satisfaction guarantee spiel is clearly not what they're making it out to be. Not surprised CH or SH failed to reply, their relationship with the brand is worth more to them than a single follower.

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 05/09/2019 12:33

I won’t be buying anything from them now. Not that I ever have so no great loss Grin but the vit c had been on my list of potentials to try.

CJDoesTheJackal · 05/09/2019 15:26

TBH I hold Space NK mostly responsible for the actual product being out of date, and think they handled it very badly. DE should have picked up on the tag. I think I'll message them directly.

Skinfulnappies46 · 05/09/2019 19:31

I also had to return my DE Vit C CJ to Spacenk. It was in date and the date printed both on the outer box and inner bottle but it was definitely darker than my las bottle. I just sent it back today and read with interest your post!
Very disappointed in DE.
Spacenk provided free returns.
Has anyone tried the Finnish Lumene skncae brand? Noticed they will be having an advent calendar which may be good to try some products. My husband is half Finish so I’m intrigued..

botemp · 05/09/2019 19:35

Well printing expiration dates that are only visible when the box is opened isn't really SpaceNK's fault in my book though they probably should have some stock management in place. Anyhow I'm already boycotting SpaceNK as a result of Brexit if it ever happens they're one of the many casualties as I've now found European suppliers for my stupidly expensive Chantecaille mascara and my Surratt bits and bobs instead.

OP posts:
botemp · 05/09/2019 19:40

That's 3 people with an expired SpaceNK product in what isn't the largest pool of DE users... Very suspicious Hmm

I thought Lumene was a makeup brand. My local department store got rid of a whole load of it in the sale, think it was briefly popular thanks to some bought influencers.

Do any of the boring brands ever do an advent calendar, I wouldn't mind a cersve one as I've never tried anything but keep meaning to but a lot of it so big so if I hate it I'll feel a bit crap about needing to use it up.

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 05/09/2019 20:59

I would love a Cerave advent calendar Bo it would be nice and reasonably priced too. Maybe we should get on to them...

The only other brand I’d be interested in would be hourglass though I know that would definitely not be reasonably priced! Hoping the new Edit palettes will be out soon though.

I thought Lumene was makeup too but after a quick google it seems they do quite an extensive skin care range as well, look fantastic stock it and have a 20% off deal at the moment.

botemp · 05/09/2019 21:10

Yes, Cerave, not cersve as my autocorrect seems to be insisting. Pretty sure cersve is covevfe's girlfriend...

It’s that time again where I have my monthly chin breakout and I have a particularly large nodule type zit on my jaw. I just wondered what you guys would advise to get rid of it quickly?

SallieSallow · 05/09/2019 22:47

Biologique Recherche P50 is great for seeing off those big under the skin hormonal spots cloud but is £££ and will take a few days to come as it’s only available from one stockist on line.

If you’ve got any BHA or salicylic acid toner then that might help shrink it, or a clay mask like Vichy or Glamglow supermud, other than that I’m not sure. I see sudocreme recommended a lot here on S&B for spots but it didn’t ever work for me.

cloud1183 · 06/09/2019 08:23

Thanks Sallie. I usually zap salicylic on when I feel one brewing and it kind of stops it in its tracks but this particular nasty one came overnight and is as bad as anything I’ve ever had

botemp · 06/09/2019 08:30

cloud, because it's hormonal it really is just management, so something anti inflammatory is the best option, but it sound like salicylic isn't cutting it. Other options would be Azelaic, AHA, PHA and clay masks. Cicaplast is also anti inflammatory so could be worth a try too.

Do you have any particular food cravings just before/during TOM? It may be worth cutting out sugar or dairy in the lead up to see if that helps. Otherwise it could be worth asking your GP for a topical like Zineryt (existe under different brand names) just to take down the worst of it.

OP posts:
EnidButton · 06/09/2019 15:57

My method is on the spot wash with neat hibi scrub then Zineryt every night until it's gone down or come out and dried up. Then Cicaplast b5 on the dried bit to speed up healing and prevent a red mark. But that's after years of trying dozens of other things so how well it works on others I don't know.

EnidButton · 06/09/2019 15:59

No experience with it but on another thread a few people were singing the praises of this serum www.boots.com/balance-me-congested-skin-serum-15ml-10262895?cm_mmc=bmm-buk-google-ppc--premium_beauty--Balance+Me+-+DSA-_-BM%7CBalance+Me%7CBMM&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI1fqys7Wu5AIVmuF3Ch2apgsPEAAYASAAEgJdQfD_BwE

Few posters said it was very good at reducing spots.

EnidButton · 06/09/2019 17:51

Anyone worked out their 'colours' or season? Never liked the idea as it seems restricting but still curious about it. I do feel like some colours drain my already pale face.

I'm definitely cool toned but just tried on a chocolate brown coat, after avoiding brown my whole life, and I really suit the colour. Google tells me I have warm toned eyes. Khaki hazel. I match none of the colour season categories.

Coat is going back as it's terrible quality but going to look for another brown coat.

Anyway, curious if it worked for anyone without them paying someone else to tell them what they were.

cloud1183 · 06/09/2019 18:36

Enid- I’ve read a few times that hibiscrub is really good. I may get some from amazon

I’ve been on the pill for years for hormonal acne and at 35 decided to come off it and see how I do without. Needless to say, my skin is a mess again which is really frustrating. I invest a lot of time/money on skincare but the pill is the only thing that solves the issue so I’m going back on it again

SallieSallow · 06/09/2019 19:58

I’ve thought about it Enid but am a bit dubious as a friend had it done (in person and cost a lot of money) she stuck to it for a while but found it restrictive and didn’t feel she looked any better in what were allegedly ‘her’ colours.

I don’t seem to fit any of the categories/seasons when I’ve done the online analysis and I can already tell straight away which colours don’t suit me just holding them next to my face, anything with even a hint of yellow in it (including browns, beiges and khakis) makes me look jaundiced.

JDSTER · 06/09/2019 20:12

I’m a bit Shock at the expired DE. I had about 2 bottles of it but bought in America and lasted really well. I’m now onto Timeless Vit C bought direct from uk stockist. I keep in fridge and quite happy with it.

I’m a ‘spring’ apparently Enid. Someone I knew years ago did my colours (for free) and I bought a little swatch card with the colours I’m supposed to wear. I certainly don’t stick with it but there’s definitely some spring colours that suit me so I’m sure there’s something in it.

EnidButton · 06/09/2019 21:48

That's very frustrating Cloud. I struggled for years with hormonal acne. Extra frustrating when you take care of your skin.
If you get hibi scrub remember it's a surgical scrub and wasn't made for facial skin, although I've seen American derms recommend it. Use very sparingly and completely avoid your eyes, mouth, ears and nose. Don't use it like a face wash.

Good for smelly feet too. Apparently. Grin

JD and Sallie I just can't work out what I'd be. I was so sure brown wouldn't suit me but it makes my eyes look really nice. I'll try it on again when I have my hair and makeup done. Maybe you can be in between seasons? 🤷🏻‍♀️

EnidButton · 06/09/2019 21:49

Oh and if you're going to the doc anyway Cloud, see what you think about about Zineryt and maybe give that a try. I really like it. Just as an on the spot treatment rather than all over.

onemorecakeplease · 06/09/2019 22:43

Have just ordered LRP 3 step system as per the adult acne sheet! Thank you for the info.

Have had lovely skin for the past 15 years and then recently (last 6 months) its been awful as my medicated spot treatment from the doc was discontinued! (Dalacin topical solution)

So here I am aged 39 and all spotty. I'm going to try the LRP and I'm completely off dairy after a recent intolerance test. Had to up my vit C, Bs and take a probiotic and my skin is purging I think (?)

Feeling very miserable, lots of big sore spots under the skin and little bumps that don't come to anything.

Anyway that's all my woes, glad I found the info sheets and hope something will help!

EnidButton · 06/09/2019 23:15

Just in case you do t know One, quite a few people break out after taking B vitamins. Particularly B6 and B12. I can't take any. If you need them for your health then that obviously comes first but could be another reason your skin hasn't been happy recently. (I can't take vitamin C either. Even a glass of orange juice gives me cystic spots.) I seem to be mentioning this a lot today but Zineryt might be an alternative to the Dalacin. Different anti biotic but same idea.

onemorecakeplease · 07/09/2019 08:54

Oh goodness they are the vitamins I am taking. Will stop them and get them through my diet.

Can you buy zineryt or is it a prescription thing?

Thank you

botemp · 07/09/2019 09:39

Are you actually deficient of vitamins or just taking them because? Vitamins are such Russian roulette, you have no idea what else is ending up in there as the regulation around their manufacturing is so minimal, especially compared to medicine. It could be a multitude of things your skin is reacting to. It's a really questionable industry, if you want to buy yourself some assurance of quality you'll end up paying hundreds a month on vitamins when most healthy individuals with a varied diet won't be deficient in things like vitamin a,b,c, etc.

What LRP 3 step system did you buy? I don't think I made any product recs in that info sheet and generally don't recommend 3 step systems. Is it the effaclair? If so, I'd reconsider if not used yet, the cleanser is quite harsh and drying and not for everyone and the duo product is really great for some but not for all.

Where I am (not UK) you can get Zineryt (though a brand equivalent) OTC without a need for prescription (but a prescription means insurance pays for it) so at the very least you should be able to order from a European pharmacy online so long as the UK is still in the EU. I've forgotten the name but I do actually have a script for it that I've never needed to use, so I'll post the name later.
